To get email alerts when someone edits an existing WordPress post or page, use WordPress.com’s built-in Email Post Changes setting or install its plugin on a WordPress site that uses plugins. An administrator can choose recipients, post types, and whether draft edits count. This feature does not alert you when a post is published for the first time; publication and other workflow alerts need a different notification method.
Choose the notification that matches what you need
| What you want | Suitable option | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Email selected people when an existing post or page is edited | Email Post Changes | Alerts for existing items; published content is covered by default, with drafts available as an option. It excludes newly published posts. WordPress.com Support |
| Custom recipients or messages, or alerts for other events such as first publication | Notification – Custom Notifications and Alerts for WordPress | The plugin listing describes triggers including Post Updated and Post Published, configurable recipients, merge-tag message content, and email or webhook delivery. |
| Rules for post-status changes or custom post types | Post Status Notifier Lite | Its directory description covers configurable rules and custom post types. SMTP support is listed as a Premium feature. |
| Let an editor send a message about one item | Page Notification Email | An editor enters recipients in the post or page editor and sends the email manually; this is not an automatic alert for every edit. |
| Adjust status-change notifications in an Automattic VIP workflow | VIP Workflow Plugin | The repository documents filters for recipients, subject, message, and headers in status-change notification emails. |
| Get emails about internal notes or mentions | WordPress Notes | Notes notifications concern notes and mentions, not general post edits. WordPress documentation |
Set up Email Post Changes on WordPress.com
An administrator must change this setting. The WordPress.com Support guide, last reviewed September 7, 2026, gives this path:
- In your site dashboard, open Settings → Writing.
- Find Email Post Changes and enable Send an email when a post or page changes.
- Select the site users who should receive alerts.
- Choose whether to cover posts, pages, or both.
- Published items are included by default. Enable the draft option if edits to drafts should also trigger email.
- Save the settings.
WordPress.com Support describes the feature this way: “Email Post Changes emails you each time an approved user edits an existing post or page on your site.” See the Email Post Changes support guide for the current setting details.

For a site where plugins are installed, the WordPress.com guide directs administrators to install and activate the Email Post Changes plugin, then configure it in the dashboard:
#1 Best Overall
- Install and activate Email Post Changes.
- Go to Settings → Email Post Changes.
- Enable email notifications. Select site users and, if needed, enter additional recipient addresses, one address per line.
- Choose the post types to monitor and enable draft notifications if required.
- Save the settings.
In the no-plugin WordPress.com flow, people who are not already site users must first be invited as users before they can be selected as recipients. Check the official setup guide for the instructions that apply to your site.
Understand the limits of edit alerts
Editing an existing item is different from publishing a new one
Email Post Changes is for edits to existing posts and pages; it does not send an email for a post’s first publication. If you need that alert, the Notification plugin listing documents a separate Post Published trigger as well as Post Updated. Review its current listing to confirm the available triggers and configuration.
Draft alerts are optional
The standard Email Post Changes setting covers published items. Turn on its draft option if your workflow also requires alerts for changes to drafts. Select the relevant post types so the notification scope matches the content you intend to monitor.
Notes and manual emails are different workflows
WordPress Notes emails the post’s author when another user leaves a new note on that post, and it emails a user mentioned in a note. Notes are internal rather than visible to site visitors; adjust this behavior under Settings → Discussion. They do not report every content edit. WordPress Notes documentation
Rank #3
Likewise, Page Notification Email is a manual send action from a post or page editor, not an automatic update alert. It is useful when an editor chooses to notify people about a particular item, rather than when the site should email recipients after every edit. Plugin listing
If notification emails do not arrive
First verify that the intended recipients are selected and that the monitored post types and draft setting cover the change you expected to trigger an alert. The setup guidance explains configuration, but it does not establish that a particular site’s outgoing mail is correctly configured or that messages are reaching inboxes.
Rank #4
If the settings are correct and emails are still missing, investigate outgoing mail delivery for your WordPress site, including any SMTP or transactional-email configuration it uses. That is a separate delivery issue, not a requirement established for every site. Post Status Notifier Lite lists SMTP support as a Premium feature; check its current listing for details.
