WordPress’s Block Editor includes keyboard commands for saving, undoing changes, formatting text, inserting and rearranging blocks, opening List View, and running site-wide commands. The most useful starting set is Ctrl/Cmd+S, Ctrl/Cmd+Z, Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z, Ctrl/Cmd+B, Ctrl/Cmd+I, and the List View shortcut.
This guide uses Windows/Linux and Mac labels for the Block Editor. Keyboard layouts, browser settings, accessibility software and WordPress version can affect whether a command works. Open the editor’s own reference with Shift+Alt+H on Windows/Linux or Control+Option+H on Mac whenever you need to check the current mappings.

The table separates operating-system conventions. On Mac, Command is shown as Cmd; on Windows and Linux, use Ctrl unless your keyboard or desktop environment maps it differently.

Some commands are context-dependent. For example, Ctrl/Cmd+K is normally a link command when text is selected, but it can invoke the Command Palette when the editor is in a context that supports it. If a shortcut does nothing, use the toolbar or menu and check the in-editor reference.

How to use List View as a page outline
List View is more than a layer panel: it is a structured outline of the page. It shows parent, child and nested blocks, so a long page can be navigated by block name instead of by scrolling through the canvas.
Open and navigate it
- Press Shift+Alt+O on Windows/Linux or Control+Option+O on Mac, or open List View from the editor toolbar.
- Select a heading, group, column, image or other block in the outline to jump to it on the canvas.
- Expand or collapse nested items to focus on one section.
- Use multi-select when you need to move, duplicate or delete a related set of blocks together.
Keep List View open
In supported Block Editor versions, open the three-dot options menu, choose Preferences, open General, and enable the option to keep List View open by default. The exact label can vary by WordPress release. This setting is especially useful for templates and pages built from Groups, Columns, Query Loops or other nested structures.
Use the slash inserter for fast block creation
Place the cursor in an empty paragraph and type /list to search for and insert a List block. The slash inserter also accepts the beginning of other block names, letting you insert blocks without opening the plus-button menu. Choose the result with the keyboard and continue typing.
What the Command Palette can and cannot do
In supported WordPress admin and editor contexts, Ctrl+K on Windows/Linux or Cmd+K on Mac opens the Command Palette. Search can take you to posts and pages, dashboard areas, styles and templates, or run an available command without hunting through menus.

Availability is version- and context-sensitive. WordPress documentation describes expanded availability in WordPress 7.1 through the admin bar, while some installations or environments do not support the keyboard shortcut. It is an admin/editor feature, not a shortcut for the public front end. If the key combination opens link controls, first place the cursor outside selected link text or use the Command Palette entry in the interface.
A practical learning order
- Protect your work: learn save, undo and redo first.
- Format while typing: add bold, italic, underline and links without reaching for the toolbar.
- Build and revise blocks: practice duplicate, delete, insert-before, insert-after and move commands.
- Navigate structure: use List View for nested layouts and multi-selection.
- Speed up administration: try the Command Palette, fullscreen mode and the settings-sidebar toggle.
Learn a few commands at a time and keep the shortcut reference available. The benefit comes from avoiding repeated pointer travel, not from memorizing every command in one session.

Block Editor versus Classic Editor
These mappings are for the WordPress Block Editor. The Classic Editor has a separate shortcut list and different behavior, so do not assume a Block Editor command works there. If your editing screen does not show blocks, consult the Classic Editor documentation or use its menus to identify the applicable command.

When a shortcut does not work
- Confirm that the editor has focus; click inside the canvas or the relevant panel and try again.
- Check whether text, a block or the whole document is selected. The same keys can have different meanings in different selections.
- Look for browser, operating-system, keyboard-layout or accessibility software conflicts.
- Verify the command in the current editor by opening the shortcut list with Shift+Alt+H or Control+Option+H.
- Use the toolbar, three-dot menu or List View as a fallback. Shortcuts can change between WordPress releases and plugins can add their own commands.
Do these shortcuts save time?
They can reduce repeated mouse movement and make block-heavy editing more predictable, but there is no official, attributable measurement that guarantees a specific number of minutes saved. The practical gain depends on your keyboard familiarity, page complexity and how often you repeat the same operations.
