Selenium’s Python WebDriver controls a browser; its documented API does not provide a built-in video-recording command. To save a test video, run a separate recorder alongside the WebDriver session, stop it reliably during pytest teardown, and upload the finalized file as a CI artifact. The right recorder depends on whether you need the browser viewport, the whole desktop, or a remote grid session.
What Selenium records—and what it does not
Selenium’s Python bindings create WebDriver sessions and automate supported browsers, but the official API documentation does not describe a native start_video_recording() method. WebDriver is for driving the browser natively, not encoding its rendered output as a video. See the Selenium WebDriver documentation and W3C WebDriver specification.
Plan video capture as a separate process or service. It must start before the browser actions you want to see, remain active while the test runs, and stop in cleanup so the output file is finalized even when an assertion fails. A recorder can capture the desktop, the browser viewport, or a remote execution session; those are different capture scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable.

OS-level desktop recording
A desktop recorder captures what is rendered on the machine’s display, not just the browser. This can include browser chrome, dialogs, and unrelated desktop content. It may require a display server and a visible desktop, so check the CI runner’s environment before choosing it. Headless and headed runs can behave differently; verify each mode independently.

Browser or grid recording
A browser- or grid-based recorder may capture only the browser viewport or a remote session. This can avoid relying on a local desktop, but behavior, supported browsers, formats, and retention are implementation-specific. Confirm the recorder’s current documentation and validate it against the exact browser and execution environment you use.
Pytest plugin
The official pytest plugin index lists pytest-selenium as a production/stable Selenium plugin and includes a pytest-record-video listing described as recording video during test execution. The index does not establish the latter plugin’s current flags, browser support, codecs, or maintenance guarantees; inspect its own current documentation before adopting it. The pytest-selenium documentation documents installation with pip install pytest-selenium and Python >=3.7 support. Do not infer that those details apply to pytest-record-video.
Build a pytest fixture with reliable cleanup
Keep the WebDriver and recorder lifecycle together in a fixture. The following is a runnable lifecycle pattern once you replace start_external_recorder with the API of the recorder you select; it is deliberately not presented as a complete recorder implementation.

recorder.stop()The fixture starts the recorder before creating the browser, so browser startup and subsequent navigation can be included if the recorder captures that environment. Teardown uses finally, which runs whether the test passes or raises an assertion error. Adapt cleanup to your recorder’s API: some recorders need a process wait, file flush, or explicit finalization after stop. Ensure that finalization completes before a CI job uploads the file.
Depending on how the recorder is launched, startup itself can fail. A production fixture should handle that failure without leaving a WebDriver process running. Likewise, if WebDriver startup fails after recording begins, stop the recorder. The exact process-management calls are recorder-specific and should follow its documentation.
Use a deterministic name and attach the artifact
Replace the fixed filename with a name that identifies the test, browser, and build. Keep generated files in a known output directory that your CI system can publish. Store logs and screenshots alongside the video so a reviewer can correlate what happened. Configure artifact publication to run after failed tests as well as successful ones; otherwise, the most useful recordings may be lost.

Recording workflow from local run to CI
- Define the capture scope. Decide whether debugging requires the browser viewport, entire desktop, or a remote grid session. Check display-server and remote-session requirements.
- Choose and validate the recorder. Review its current documentation for browser coverage, headed/headless behavior, file format, output location, and stop/finalize semantics. A plugin can reduce fixture code; custom capture can offer more control.
- Start capture before the relevant browser actions. Create the recorder before navigation or interactions that need to appear in the video.
- Use guaranteed teardown. Stop the recorder and quit WebDriver from a
finallypath or pytest fixture finalizer. Confirm cleanup still executes for failed assertions and browser-startup errors. - Wait for finalization. Before artifact upload, check that the recorder has exited or otherwise confirmed that the file is complete. A file created at startup may still be unusable until the recorder finalizes it.
- Publish the artifact on failure. Configure CI to retain the video after failed runs and give it a stable, searchable name that includes the test, browser, and build identifier.
- Test both execution modes. Validate headed and headless runs separately, and test locally and in CI if both matter. Do not assume identical output without checking.
- Review sensitive content. Pages, URLs, browser notifications, and dialogs can reveal credentials or personal information. Avoid recording secrets, redact where possible, and restrict artifact access and retention appropriately.
Use WebDriver BiDi for events, not as a video encoder
Selenium’s WebDriver BiDi adds a WebSocket connection for scripts to stream and react to browser events. Selenium presents it as a cross-browser alternative to CDP and documents enabling it with a WebSocket URL capability. See Selenium’s WebDriver BiDi documentation. BiDi event data can help explain what happened during a test, but that documentation does not describe encoding the rendered viewport into an MP4 or WebM. Use a separate recorder for visual playback and BiDi when event-level observability is useful.

Common recording problems
The video file is missing or empty
- Check that the recorder starts successfully and that the destination directory exists and is writable.
- Confirm that the recorder is started before the browser actions to capture and that the CI artifact path matches the actual output path.
- Make sure teardown runs and that the recorder has finished finalizing the file before the upload step begins.
The test fails but no video is retained
Artifact publication may be configured to run only after a successful job. Change the CI artifact step so it runs after failures as well, and verify that the fixture’s cleanup path stops recording when a test raises an exception.
Headless CI produces no useful recording
An OS-level recorder may depend on a display server, while a browser- or grid-level recorder may have different headless support. Check the selected recorder’s requirements and test the same browser mode and runner configuration used in CI. Do not assume a headed recording setup works unchanged in headless execution.

The output differs between local and remote runs
Local desktop capture and remote grid capture can cover different surfaces. Identify which machine or session the recorder observes, then validate its capture scope, browser support, and output format for that environment.
The recording ends before the last action or cannot be played
Stop only after the final assertion and interaction you need to inspect. Some recorders require an explicit wait or finalization step; follow their documentation and delay artifact upload until that completes. A filename alone does not guarantee a finalized playable video.

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Recording adds a process or service to the test run and can consume machine resources and storage. The available Selenium and pytest documentation cited here does not provide a general overhead figure, video-size benchmark, or universal cost estimate, so measure these in your own runner with your chosen recorder and test suite. Keep retention and artifact access proportional to the diagnostic value, especially when recordings can expose sensitive page content.

Reliability depends on lifecycle management as much as capture. A useful recording requires a recorder that can see the intended session, cleanup that runs on failure, file finalization before upload, and an artifact step that preserves failed-run output. Treat each as a separate condition to validate.
