Online traceroute tools show the path from a service’s probe to a destination—not automatically the path from your own device or the network where a problem occurs. For distributed measurements and comparing routes, start with RIPE Atlas; for a quick multi-location check, try traceroute.dev or mtr.si. Choose a probe close to the affected network, then compare its result with a local trace or another origin before drawing conclusions.

Which online traceroute tool should you use?

The right choice depends chiefly on where the trace originates and whether you need a one-off route, multiple vantage points, or comparisons over time. Online tools can quickly show how a remote network reaches a host, but their results are not a substitute for a trace from the affected connection.

  • For distributed measurements and deeper investigation: RIPE Atlas measurements, with Khipu to explore paths and Path Analysis to compare traceroute data over time.
  • For a quick multi-probe test: traceroute.dev or mtr.si.
  • For a trace from a stated US location: Traceroute Online, which identifies Newark, New Jersey as its vantage point.
  • For a North American provider origin: US Dedicated Looking Glass advertises tests from seven North American points of presence.

The ten entries below include measurement and visualization functions within RIPE Atlas, not ten independent probe networks. They also include a regional-tool category, because the available service descriptions do not establish ten individually verified, distinct standalone services.

10 online traceroute options

1. RIPE Atlas measurements

RIPE Atlas is a distributed measurement platform that supports traceroute and other measurement types from its probes. It is the strongest choice here when the question calls for traces from multiple vantage points rather than a single web server. Custom measurements use credits; check current account and credit requirements before relying on a particular test being free. The platform’s probe inventory can change, so do not treat a live count as permanent.

2. RIPE Atlas Khipu

Khipu visualizes RIPE Atlas measurement paths and offers different views for exploring traceroute results. It works with Atlas data; it is not a separate probe network. Use it when understanding or presenting a path is more important than simply getting a text trace.

3. RIPE Atlas Path Analysis

Path Analysis helps compare traceroute data across time. That is useful when investigating a route change, degradation, or changes involving autonomous systems (ASNs) and internet exchange points (IXPs). It analyzes measurement data rather than supplying an independent set of probes.

4. traceroute.dev Looking Glass

traceroute.dev offers traceroute, MTR, and ping from multiple probes and displays probe locations and networks. It is a practical starting point for checking whether routes differ across origins. Probe availability and locations are service details that may change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. mtr.si Network Diagnostics

mtr.si presents Globalping-backed checks including MTR, traceroute, ping, DNS, and HTTP from multiple locations. It suits investigations where you want to compare route observations with a name-resolution or web-request check. Its location inventory is subject to change.

6. Traceroute Online

Traceroute Online accepts a domain or IP address and visualizes the route from a stated Newark, New Jersey vantage point. It can be useful when that origin is relevant, but its route may differ from the one seen by a user elsewhere.

7. US Dedicated Looking Glass

US Dedicated Looking Glass advertises ping, traceroute, and MTR from seven North American points of presence. Consider it when a North American server origin matches the troubleshooting question; it does not represent every North American ISP or network.

8. Webex Looking Glass

Webex Looking Glass appears in search listings as offering traceroute. The available service description establishes little beyond that, so check the live interface for current access, supported commands, and available origins before depending on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. A relevant provider looking glass

Some internet service providers and hosting companies operate public looking-glass tools. This is a category, not one verified named service: use it only after confirming that the provider offers a public interface, supports traceroute or MTR, and has an origin relevant to the affected network. Access and available commands vary by provider.

10. A second RIPE Atlas vantage point

A separate RIPE Atlas measurement from another suitable probe can help test whether an observation is specific to one origin. This is not another service: it is a way to use Atlas’s distributed measurements to compare paths. Select probes based on the network and geography relevant to the incident rather than treating a second location as automatically representative.

How to choose a useful vantage point

Before running a trace, decide which network’s route you need to inspect. A trace from a tool’s server answers how that server reaches the destination. It does not establish how your home connection, office, cloud host, or customer’s ISP reaches it.

  • Match the origin to the problem: for a user-facing outage, a probe near the affected user’s network or region is more informative than an unrelated server.
  • Compare origins when location may matter: run traces from more than one relevant probe to identify route variation.
  • Use local measurements too: run a trace from the affected device or server when possible; the online result cannot stand in for it.
  • Pick the measurement that answers the question: traceroute reveals successive route responses; ping checks reachability and round-trip response; MTR combines repeated route and latency observations; DNS and HTTP checks test name resolution and web requests.
  • Account for access requirements: RIPE Atlas custom measurements use credits, so confirm current account requirements before planning repeated tests.

How to interpret traceroute results

What a hop and its time mean

Traceroute sends probes with increasing time-to-live (TTL) values. When a router’s TTL expires, it may return an ICMP Time Exceeded message, allowing the tool to show that router as a hop. The displayed round-trip time is the probe’s round trip to that router. It is not a measurement of delay caused solely by that hop.

Why maps do not show the cable route

Some services place hops on a map using estimated geographic locations. Those positions and the connecting lines are visual aids, not evidence of the physical path taken by a cable.

What a missing hop does—and does not—prove

A router may not answer diagnostic probes, or may handle those probes differently from ordinary forwarded traffic. A missing reply by itself therefore does not prove packet loss affecting user traffic. Traceroute Online cautions that “Missing replies alone do not prove packet loss in forwarded traffic.” Source: Traceroute Online.

If the trace stops before the destination, the result alone does not identify why. Filtering, probe behavior, return-path behavior, or a genuine reachability issue may be involved. Compare another relevant probe and test the endpoint separately rather than assigning a cause from the trace alone.

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Define the affected path: note the source network, destination hostname or IP, time of the issue, and whether the failure affects all users or only some.
  2. Run an online trace from a relevant origin: choose a probe near the affected network or use a distributed service such as RIPE Atlas to select suitable vantage points.
  3. Compare a second origin: if one trace differs or stops early, repeat from another relevant probe. A route difference may reflect the origins rather than a fault.
  4. Check the endpoint with another measurement: use ping, MTR, DNS, or HTTP as appropriate. A route trace alone does not establish whether a web application is responding correctly.
  5. Run a local trace if possible: compare the result from the affected device or server with the online trace. This isolates whether the observations are specific to a remote vantage point.
  6. Repeat over time for a changing issue: use RIPE Atlas Path Analysis to compare traceroute data across time, or retain repeated measurements so you can distinguish a persistent route from a transient observation.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is capturing a website rather than tracing its network route, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. It is not a traceroute service. A GET request returns a screenshot or PDF, and its options include waits, custom headers and cookies, device presets, full-page capture, and PDF settings. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

Cost, access, and reliability considerations

  • Probe availability changes: the number and location of live probes can shift. Confirm a service’s current origins when geography matters.
  • Custom measurements may have access conditions: RIPE Atlas says custom measurements use credits. Check the current terms for your account before scheduling repeated tests.
  • One result is a snapshot: a single trace captures responses to probes at one point in time. Repeated observations and comparisons are more useful for intermittent problems.
  • Probe response is not the same as application health: intermediate routers may treat diagnostic traffic differently; pair route tests with endpoint checks relevant to the failure.

Common problems and what to do

The online route does not match my local route

This is expected when the probes are on different networks. Select an online vantage point closer to the affected source and compare it with a trace from that source. Do not assume either path represents all users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trace shows asterisks or missing hops

A missing response is inconclusive about forwarded traffic. Repeat the trace, compare a different origin, and use an end-to-end check such as ping or HTTP where suitable.

The trace stops before the destination

That observation alone cannot distinguish filtering, probe or return-path behavior, and an actual reachability failure. Test the endpoint separately and compare results from another relevant probe.

The map suggests an implausible route

Map locations are estimates and do not establish a physical cable path. Use hop and network information for route investigation rather than treating map lines as infrastructure documentation.

A service does not offer the command or origin I need

Looking-glass interfaces differ. Check the live tool for supported commands and probe locations, or choose another service whose measurement modes and origin fit the question.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an online traceroute to troubleshoot a remote website?

Yes, as one diagnostic view: it shows a route from the service’s probe to the website’s destination. Pair it with an endpoint check and, when possible, a trace from the network experiencing the issue.

Is RIPE Atlas Khipu a separate traceroute network?

No. Khipu visualizes RIPE Atlas measurement data; it does not provide an independent probe network.

Should I include retired TraceMON in a current list?

No. RIPE NCC documentation says TraceMON was retired in favour of Khipu. See RIPE NCC Atlas tools documentation.
