To show featured-image thumbnails in a WordPress admin list, add a column with the filter for that list, then fill it with a callback on the matching custom-column action. The hooks differ for Posts, Pages, and custom post types, and the post type must support featured images.

Which WordPress admin list are you changing?

Choose hooks for the specific list table. Registering a column and rendering its cells are separate tasks: the columns filter adds the heading, while the custom-column action supplies the value for each row.

Admin list Column filter Cell-rendering action
Posts manage_posts_columns manage_posts_custom_column
Pages manage_pages_columns manage_pages_custom_column
Non-hierarchical custom post type manage_{$post_type}_posts_columns manage_{$post_type}_posts_custom_column
Hierarchical custom post type manage_pages_columns manage_pages_custom_column

In the custom post type hook names, replace {$post_type} with the registered post-type key, such as book. Hierarchical custom post types use the page-style custom-column path rather than assuming the non-hierarchical pattern applies.

Add a thumbnail column to the Posts list

For the standard Posts screen, add this code to a site-specific plugin or your active theme’s functions.php. A site-specific plugin keeps the customization independent of theme changes.

add_filter( 'manage_posts_columns', 'f251_add_featured_image_column' );
function f251_add_featured_image_column( $columns ) {
    $columns['featured_image'] = 'Featured Image';
    return $columns;
}

add_action( 'manage_posts_custom_column', 'f251_render_featured_image_column', 10, 2 );
function f251_render_featured_image_column( $column_name, $post_id ) {
    if ( 'featured_image' !== $column_name ) {
        return;
    }

    echo get_the_post_thumbnail( $post_id, 'thumbnail' );
}

The unique key, featured_image, connects the heading to the cell callback. The callback returns without output for every other column, so it does not interfere with other custom columns. The thumbnail size requests a small image for the list view.

Use the matching hooks for Pages or a custom post type

Pages

For Pages, use the page-specific hooks. The callback can render the thumbnail the same way as the Posts example:

add_filter( 'manage_pages_columns', 'f251_add_page_featured_image_column' );
function f251_add_page_featured_image_column( $columns ) {
    $columns['featured_image'] = 'Featured Image';
    return $columns;
}

add_action( 'manage_pages_custom_column', 'f251_render_page_featured_image_column', 10, 2 );
function f251_render_page_featured_image_column( $column_name, $post_id ) {
    if ( 'featured_image' !== $column_name ) {
        return;
    }

    echo get_the_post_thumbnail( $post_id, 'thumbnail' );
}

Non-hierarchical custom post types

For a non-hierarchical custom post type, substitute its registered key in both hook names. This example assumes the key is book:

add_filter( 'manage_book_posts_columns', 'f251_add_book_featured_image_column' );
function f251_add_book_featured_image_column( $columns ) {
    $columns['featured_image'] = 'Featured Image';
    return $columns;
}

add_action( 'manage_book_posts_custom_column', 'f251_render_book_featured_image_column', 10, 2 );
function f251_render_book_featured_image_column( $column_name, $post_id ) {
    if ( 'featured_image' !== $column_name ) {
        return;
    }

    echo get_the_post_thumbnail( $post_id, 'thumbnail' );
}

For a hierarchical custom post type, use manage_pages_columns and manage_pages_custom_column instead. If the column is meant only for that type, check the post type in the callback before rendering, so the page-style hook does not add output to other hierarchical lists.

Check featured-image support if thumbnails are missing

A blank cell can mean the item has no featured image, or that its post type does not support thumbnails. Confirm both before changing the callback. For a custom post type, its registration needs thumbnail support; for an existing type, check its registration and site configuration. The column code cannot display a featured image that the post type does not support or the item does not have.

  • Confirm the item has a featured image set.
  • Confirm the post type supports thumbnails.
  • Confirm the columns filter and rendering action match the list being edited.
  • Confirm the column key checked by the callback matches the key added to the columns array.

Use code or a plugin?

Code is suitable when you want control over the column key and rendering and are comfortable maintaining a small customization. A plugin can be more convenient when you prefer settings instead of editing code.

Approach Useful when Trade-off
Custom code You need a tailored column or thumbnail output. You must maintain the code and select the correct hooks for each post type.
Featured Image Add in Admin Column You want a settings-based way to choose supported post types for the column. Check the plugin’s current WordPress compatibility and support status before installing; listing details can change.

The WordPress.org listing describes Featured Image Add in Admin Column as supporting post types that support thumbnails and allowing administrators to select post types. Its reported version, active-install count, and tested WordPress version are changeable listing details, not a guarantee that it is compatible with a particular site.
