If your WordPress dashboard is blank, unstyled, or missing menus, first determine whether the browser is using stale files or whether the admin’s CSS requests are failing. Hard-refresh /wp-admin/, test a private window, then inspect the browser’s Network and Console panels. The HTTP status and final asset URL usually identify whether the cause is cache, incorrect HTTPS settings, a plugin, a server rule, or damaged WordPress core files.
1. Identify exactly how the stylesheet is failing
Open developer tools before loading /wp-admin/. In the Network panel, filter by CSS and reload the page. Record the failed request’s status, final URL, and response.
- 404: The generated path is wrong or the file is missing.
- 403: File permissions, a firewall, security plugin, or server rule is blocking the request.
- Mixed-content warning: An HTTPS dashboard is requesting an HTTP stylesheet, which modern browsers may block.
- 5xx: The web server, PHP process, reverse proxy, or resource limits are failing while serving the asset.
Review the Console panel as well. Certificate, content-security-policy, CORS, and redirect errors can explain why a request that appears to exist still does not apply.
2. Rule out stale browser and server responses
- With the dashboard open, perform a hard refresh (for example,
Ctrl+F5on Windows orCmd+Shift+Ron macOS). - Open the same administrator URL in a private window or a second browser. If it works there, clear the affected browser’s cached files and cookies for the site.
- Purge the WordPress cache plugin, if one is installed.
- Purge the host’s server cache and any CDN or reverse-proxy cache.
Do not cache authenticated /wp-admin/ responses at a reverse proxy. Configure the host or CDN to exclude the admin path and cookie-based administrator sessions. Otherwise, an old HTML response can continue pointing to obsolete stylesheets even after the underlying files are fixed.

3. Make every WordPress URL consistently HTTPS
Compare the URL in the browser with WordPress’s home and siteurl values. They should use the same hostname and https:// scheme as the dashboard. Check both the database values and any constants in wp-config.php:

After an SSL migration, search generated page source and failed Network requests for old http:// asset URLs. If WordPress is behind a reverse proxy, verify that the proxy passes the original HTTPS state correctly; conflicting redirects or scheme detection can make WordPress generate HTTP admin links on an HTTPS page.

4. Isolate plugins and theme code
When the failure started after an update, test caching, optimization, security, and dashboard-customization plugins first. Disable them from Plugins, clear all relevant caches, and reload the dashboard after each change.
When wp-admin is still usable
Deactivate suspected extensions one at a time. Note the first deactivation that restores the styles, then update, reconfigure, or replace that extension rather than leaving unrelated plugins disabled.

When wp-admin cannot be used
- Back up the site before changing files.
- Using your host’s file manager or SFTP, rename
wp-content/pluginsto a temporary name such asplugins.disabled. WordPress will treat all installed plugins as inactive. - Reload the login and dashboard. If the CSS returns, restore the directory name to
plugins. - Reactivate plugins individually, clearing caches between tests, until the failure returns.
If plugin isolation changes nothing, temporarily test with a current default theme. Theme code can add admin styles or filter asset URLs even though the dashboard is not the public site.
5. Check custom admin CSS implementation
Custom dashboard styles should be loaded with the admin_enqueue_scripts hook, which WordPress identifies as the proper hook for administration-panel scripts and styles.

} );Use the hook suffix for the screen that needs the styling instead of loading CSS across every admin page. Give the stylesheet a unique handle, a valid HTTPS URL, required dependencies, and a version value. Incrementing the version when the file changes helps browsers fetch the new asset.
Inspect the page source to confirm that the expected <link> element exists. Open its URL directly and verify that it returns the stylesheet with a CSS content type, rather than an HTML login page, redirect, or error document.

6. Repair missing or corrupted WordPress core files
Use core replacement only after cache, URL, extension, and server-rule checks. Back up both files and the database first. Download the exact WordPress version currently installed, then replace the wp-admin and wp-includes directories with matching fresh copies.
- Preserve
wp-content, which contains uploads, plugins, themes, and other site content. - Preserve
wp-config.php, which contains the site’s database and configuration settings. - Do not overwrite custom content while replacing core directories.
Reload the dashboard and inspect Network again. If the replacement still produces 403 or 5xx responses, review web-server error logs, file ownership, permissions, firewall rules, PHP errors, and proxy resource limits instead of repeatedly uploading files.
