Snipping Tool is included with Windows and is the simplest place to start if you do not want to install another utility. Microsoft’s support page covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and documents freeform, rectangular, window, and full-screen still captures, as well as video snips. Use Windows+Shift+S to open still-image capture; Windows+Shift+R opens video capture.

After taking a snip, you can annotate, crop, save, or share it. The support page also describes OCR text extraction and quick redaction for recognized email addresses and phone numbers. Microsoft says, “All text recognition processes are performed locally on your device.” That statement applies to Snipping Tool’s text-recognition workflow, not to the other apps in this guide.
Microsoft identifies Perfect Screenshot and Color Picker as Copilot+ PC features. Do not assume those features are available on every Windows PC. For ordinary captures without extra setup, Snipping Tool is a sensible default; move to another option when you need more automation, specialized editing, or a particular sharing workflow.
2. ShareX: best for configurable capture workflows
ShareX describes itself as free and open source for Windows. Its publisher documents full-screen, active-window, monitor, region, and scrolling captures, plus GIF and video capture. It also lists image editing and annotation, OCR, user-selected upload destinations, customizable uploader behavior, and configurable tasks that run after capture.
That breadth makes ShareX a candidate for repeat work: for example, capturing a region, annotating it, and routing the result to a chosen destination. The trade-off is configuration. If you only need to save an occasional image, its workflow options may be more than you need; that is a workflow judgment, not a measured usability result. Review the current official site for setup and capabilities before relying on a particular destination or automation.

3. Greenshot: best for lightweight capture and markup
Greenshot’s publisher calls it free and open source. It lists selected-region, window, and full-screen capture, with annotation tools for highlighting and obfuscation. Export choices named on its site include file, printer, clipboard, email, Office programs, and image-hosting services.
Its scrolling-capture description specifically names complete web pages in Internet Explorer. That does not establish current scrolling support across modern browsers, so test the browser and page you actually use before making Greenshot your web-page capture solution. If your work is mostly quick captures followed by simple markup, its narrower focus may suit you better than a more configurable tool.
4. PicPick: best for screenshots plus visual inspection
PicPick combines screen capture with an editor and a set of tools for examining visual layouts. Its official page lists blur or mosaic censoring, color adjustment, frames and watermarks, cloud and Office export, and screen recording. Named measurement and design helpers include a color picker, color palette, pixel ruler, magnifier, crosshair, protractor, and whiteboard.
This combination is useful when the task is not just to take a screenshot, but also to inspect a color or measure an interface element before sharing or documenting it. Current licensing limits, prices, and commercial-use rules are not established here. Check PicPick’s official licensing information before choosing it for a business or paid-work workflow.

5. Camtasia Snagit: best suited to polished documentation
TechSmith presents Snagit as Camtasia Snagit and as part of the Camtasia product suite. Its product page describes region, window, full-screen, and scrolling-page capture; generating guides from clicks; callouts; text recognition; and smart redaction. Those capabilities make it a plausible fit for support teams and documentation writers who need explanatory, repeatable visuals rather than just an unmarked screen grab.
Check TechSmith’s current product naming, bundle, feature eligibility, and licensing terms before buying. The product page does not establish a stable price comparison here, so this guide does not state a price or assume that a particular feature is included in every plan.
6. Lightshot: best for quick selected-area sharing
Lightshot’s official page offers a Windows download and describes selecting an area of the desktop, editing the image, and uploading it to the service to obtain a short link. That can make sharing a selected region direct, but it also means the workflow sends the capture to a hosted service.
Before uploading, check whether the image contains personal, customer, or workplace information and whether your privacy requirements allow hosted sharing. The current support status and terms of the hosted-link service are not established here; verify them before depending on it for ongoing work.

7. FastStone Capture: investigate before adopting
FastStone’s official product page identifies FastStone Capture as screen-capture and screen-recorder software and includes release notes. The available information does not reliably establish its current version, full feature set, Windows compatibility, or licensing terms. Treat it as a candidate to investigate, not as a verified match for a specific workflow. Confirm the current version and terms on the official page before installing or purchasing.
8. Flameshot: an annotation-first open-source candidate
Flameshot describes itself as free, open source, and cross-platform. Its official site lists on-screen arrows, highlights, blur or pixelation, text, shapes, numbered counters, customizable shortcuts, and command-line scripting. It also lists a 64-bit Windows installer and a portable download.
Those features make Flameshot worth considering when the priority is marking up an image on screen. The publisher describes it as cross-platform, but that alone does not establish identical behavior on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Confirm that your required capture modes and shortcuts work on your Windows setup.
