Each system lets you change that destination, and some capture workflows copy an image to the clipboard instead of creating a file. Use the table below, then check the screenshot app’s settings if the image is not where you expect.

These defaults describe the built-in tools, not every third-party screenshot utility, browser extension, game overlay, or editing application. A different app can use its own folder or ask you to choose a location each time.
Windows: find screenshots made with Snipping Tool
Check the Screenshots folder
Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool guidance says a completed snip is automatically saved to your Screenshots folder. Open File Explorer and look for the Screenshots folder in your Pictures folder. The exact path can differ if your Pictures library is redirected or synchronized, so searching for “Screenshots” in File Explorer is useful when the usual location is not visible.
Use the Windows+Shift+S workflow
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose the full-screen, window, or rectangular capture mode shown in the capture bar.
- Complete the selection. Windows copies the capture to the clipboard and displays a notification.
- Select the notification to open the image in Snipping Tool, where you can edit it and use Save as to pick a folder and filename.
The notification and editor are important: a capture being copied to the clipboard does not by itself tell you where a file was saved. If you pasted the image into another application, that application may have created the file in its own project or export folder.

Check or change automatic saving
Open Snipping Tool, select See More (the three-dot menu), then Settings. Microsoft documents controls for automatic saving and for changing the default Screenshots folder. Review those options if new captures stopped appearing in the expected directory. You can still use Save as on an individual capture to choose a different destination.
Mac: look on the desktop first
Default filename and location
macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default. The standard filename starts with Screen Shot followed by the date and time, making Finder searches and sorting by date straightforward.
Capture with the Screenshot app
- Press Shift-Command-5, or open Applications > Utilities > Screenshot.
- Choose a full-screen, window, or selected-area capture.
- Open Options before capturing to see the current save destination.
- Select a destination if you want future captures stored somewhere other than the desktop.
After a capture, macOS can show a floating thumbnail. Drag that thumbnail to another folder or application to move or share it. Control-clicking the thumbnail provides a clipboard option. A clipboard copy is temporary content, not necessarily a file on disk.

Chromebook: check Downloads
Open Screen Capture
- Press Shift+Ctrl+Show windows to open Screen Capture.
- Choose full-screen, partial-screen, or window capture.
- Complete the capture. ChromeOS stores screenshots and recordings in Downloads by default.
Choose another folder
In the Screen Capture interface, open Settings, then choose Select folder. The selected destination applies to future captures. If your Chromebook is managed by a school or organization, administrator policies or cloud-storage integrations may affect which folders are available.
What to do when the screenshot is missing
- Identify the operating system and app. A screenshot taken with a browser extension or game overlay may not follow the built-in tool’s default.
- Check the documented default. Look in Windows Screenshots, the Mac desktop, or Chromebook Downloads.
- Sort by date modified. The newest image is often easier to spot than searching by an uncertain filename.
- Search likely names. On a Mac, search for “Screen Shot.” On Windows, search for image files created around the capture time and for folders named “Screenshots.”
- Inspect the tool’s destination setting. Windows uses Snipping Tool > See More > Settings; macOS uses Screenshot > Options; ChromeOS uses Screen Capture > Settings > Select folder.
- Check the clipboard. Windows and macOS workflows can copy a capture without leaving the file in the folder you checked. Paste into an image editor or document, then save it explicitly.
- Review any Save as dialog. If you chose a custom filename or folder, the file is there rather than in the default location.
Saved file versus clipboard copy
A screenshot can exist in two different forms. A saved file has a path, filename, format, and modification date. A clipboard copy is image data held for pasting; it may disappear when replaced by another copy or when the session ends. Windows’ Windows+Shift+S flow opens the result in Snipping Tool and copies it to the clipboard. macOS’s Screenshot app can also offer a clipboard destination. If you need a reusable file, open the capture and save it, or paste it into an editor and export it.
Organize screenshots so they are easier to find
Choose a deliberate destination
For recurring work, set one destination such as a project’s “Screenshots” folder rather than leaving files scattered across the desktop and Downloads. On Windows and ChromeOS, use the documented destination controls; on macOS, set the folder from Screenshot’s Options menu.

Use meaningful names
Automatic names are useful for a quick search, but names such as checkout-error-2026-09-30.png communicate purpose immediately. Rename or use Save as while the context is still fresh.
Separate temporary captures from deliverables
Keep quick references in the default folder and move final images into the project folder. This avoids confusing an old clipboard paste or draft capture with the file you intend to share.
Format and sharing considerations
The built-in tools create image files that can be opened by common editors and attached to messages. If a website or document requires a particular format, open the saved image in an editor and export it to the required format. Do not assume that copying an image into a document preserves the original file path; save the document and the image separately when both need to be retained.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“I captured it, but no file appeared”
Check whether the workflow only copied the image to the clipboard. Reopen the capture notification or thumbnail and use Save as, then verify the destination in the tool’s settings.

“The default folder is empty”
The save location was likely changed, or another application made the capture. Search by date and inspect the app that performed the capture rather than assuming the operating system’s built-in folder applies.
“I found an old screenshot, not the new one”
Sort by modification date, repeat one test capture, and immediately note the filename and destination shown by the tool. This distinguishes a changed folder from a failed capture.
“The image is in a document but not in a folder”
It was probably pasted from the clipboard. Save or export the image from the document or image editor if you need a separate file.

Do all screenshots on one computer use the same folder?
No. The documented defaults apply to the built-in Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot app, and ChromeOS Screen Capture. Third-party tools can use different destinations.
Can I change where screenshots are saved without changing the screenshot shortcut?
Yes. Change the destination in the operating system’s screenshot tool settings; the capture shortcut can remain the same.
Why can I paste a screenshot but not find a file?
The capture may have been placed on the clipboard only. Open the capture and save it, or paste it into an editor and export an image file.
