Choose the upload method based on what your PDF generator returns: pass PDF bytes or a stream as the S3 object’s Body, or upload a file the renderer has written to disk. With AWS SDK for PHP v3, set the bucket, a deliberate object key, and ContentType to application/pdf; keep the object private unless your access design calls for otherwise.
Choose the upload shape that matches your PDF generator
PDF libraries commonly return a string of PDF bytes or write a PDF file. The AWS SDK for PHP v3 supports uploading a body, stream, or local file. Pick the path that matches the data you already have instead of writing an unnecessary intermediate file.
| PDF output | S3 upload shape | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PDF bytes in a PHP string | Pass the string as Body to putObject. |
Ensure the output size fits the application’s available memory; handle upload exceptions. |
| A stream from the renderer or storage layer | Pass the stream as Body. |
Confirm the stream’s size is available, or provide a content length when required. The SDK can consume and close raw PHP stream resources supplied to a command; do not assume you can reuse one afterward. |
| A PDF saved to a local path | Use the SDK’s file-upload operation with the local file as the source. | Check temporary-directory permissions, disk quota, cleanup on both success and failure, and how long sensitive output remains on disk. |
| PHP file APIs writing through the S3 stream wrapper | Register the wrapper and use an S3 stream URI. | Writes are buffered. Check fflush and its return value before closing; a close without a checked flush is not confirmation that the write succeeded. |
A local file can be practical when the renderer already writes one or when an intermediate artifact is useful. An in-memory string avoids that file step but uses PHP memory. There is no universal best choice: PDF size, hosting limits, retry needs, and the renderer’s output API determine the trade-off. See the AWS SDK’s file operations guide and S3 stream wrapper guide.
Upload generated PDF bytes with AWS SDK for PHP v3
The following is an illustrative pattern for a renderer that returns PDF bytes. It uses PutObject, the AWS SDK v3 S3 client, and a private object by default. Adapt the renderer call, bucket, key, region, and credential configuration to your application; this example is not a claim of tested execution.

Install and configure the AWS SDK for PHP v3 according to the current AWS S3 examples. The SDK client needs the deployment’s region and an available credential configuration. The appropriate credential provider and IAM permissions depend on where the application runs; the cited examples do not prescribe a single deployment policy.
Use an intentional object key
The Key is the object’s name within the bucket, not a local path. Choose a stable naming scheme that reflects the application, such as a document type and database identifier. Decide whether regenerating the same document should replace the existing key or whether each generation should receive a unique key. Avoid placing sensitive personal data in keys if those names may appear in logs or application URLs.
Set the response metadata
ContentType tells consumers that the object is a PDF. Set it explicitly to application/pdf rather than relying on a filename extension to determine how a later download is interpreted. Add other metadata only when the application’s retrieval or compliance design needs it.

Catch upload failures at the operation boundary
A successful PHP call should not be inferred from having generated the PDF. The S3 API operation can fail for credential, permission, bucket, network, or request reasons; catch SDK exceptions around the upload and report or retry according to the application’s error policy. Keep logs useful but do not log the PDF body or credentials. For a retry, consider whether the chosen object key makes an additional successful write safe for your application.

If the renderer writes a file, use the SDK’s file-operation method rather than reading the entire file into a PHP string solely to upload it. The SDK file operations guide describes using a local file path or stream as the source; the S3 examples also show a PutObject request using SourceFile.
<?php
$result = $s3->putObject([
'Bucket' => $bucket,
'Key' => $key,
'SourceFile' => $pdfPath,
'ContentType' => 'application/pdf',
]);
Place cleanup in a control flow that runs after success and failure, but only delete the file if your application owns it and no later step needs it. Ensure the temporary directory is writable by the PHP process and has enough space for the rendered document. Keep in mind that a file-based flow leaves a local copy until it is removed or otherwise managed.

Use the S3 stream wrapper only when its write behavior fits
The S3 stream wrapper makes S3 objects accessible through PHP’s filesystem functions after registering the wrapper. It can suit code already structured around file writes, but its buffering changes how you should detect failures. AWS’s SDK documentation states, “File write errors are only returned when a call to fflush is made.” Check the result of fflush and handle a failed flush before closing the stream. The wrapper’s w mode overwrites an existing object, so use a key strategy that matches the required overwrite behavior. Consult the stream wrapper documentation for registration and supported operations.
Generate the PDF safely and check its layout
The title does not require a particular PDF renderer. If your application converts HTML to PDF, Dompdf is one example: its output() method returns the PDF as a string, which can be passed as the S3 request body. Its documentation describes a browser-response streaming alternative as well.
Renderer settings affect both security and whether the resulting PDF looks right. Dompdf documents controls including chroot and isRemoteEnabled for local and web resource access. Restrict resource access for untrusted input, and do not enable embedded PHP for untrusted documents. Its documented layout limitations include no CSS flexbox or grid support and table rows that cannot split across pages, so check required layouts against the project’s Dompdf documentation and test representative input before relying on the output.

Keep access private and verify the deployed result
Uploading an object does not make it public. Amazon S3 objects are private by default, and AWS recommends keeping Block Public Access enabled and granting access through policies to the intended application identity or readers. A user who needs to download a private PDF can receive access through an authorized application flow; public access is not required merely because a document must be downloadable. Review Amazon S3 access control guidance and grant only the permissions the application needs.
AWS says new uploads are encrypted by default. Confirm the bucket’s encryption configuration and any applicable compliance requirements rather than assuming every request needs a separate encryption field. After deployment, verify that the expected bucket and key exist, that the object is recognized as application/pdf, and that its access behavior matches the intended policy.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Memory: If the renderer returns a complete PDF string, PHP holds those bytes while the upload request uses them. For larger documents or constrained workers, compare a stream or local-file route; AWS supports these input forms, but its documentation does not establish a universal size threshold or winner.
- Temporary storage: A file workflow shifts some pressure from memory to disk. Include temporary-file creation and cleanup in both success and exception paths, and account for sensitive data retention.
- Retries and overwrites: Define whether a repeated upload should replace an object or create a new one. A stable key can support replacement; a unique key can preserve separate generations. Choose based on the document’s retention and application semantics.
- Failure visibility: Catch API exceptions for ordinary SDK operations. For stream-wrapper writes, explicitly check flush results because errors can be reported at flush time rather than close time.
- Charges: The cited SDK and access-control references do not state a cost estimate for an application’s PDF workflow. Account for the AWS services and usage in the relevant account and region rather than assuming that generating or uploading a file has a single fixed price.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| SDK cannot authenticate or the upload is denied | Credential provider configuration or permissions for the application identity. | Confirm the runtime’s approved credential setup and that it is allowed to write to the intended bucket and key. Do not solve this by embedding a long-lived secret in source. |
| Request targets the wrong bucket or region | Deployment configuration or client region. | Check the bucket name, configured client region, and environment values used by the deployed process. |
| Object exists but downloads as an unknown file type | Missing or incorrect object metadata. | Set ContentType to application/pdf and inspect the uploaded object’s metadata. |
| Stream-wrapper write appears successful but the object is incomplete or absent | Buffered output and unobserved flush error. | Call fflush, test its return value, and handle failure before closing the stream. |
| A previous PDF disappeared after regeneration | The same key was reused. | Decide whether replacement is intended; otherwise generate a distinct key for each version. |
| PDF is blank, missing assets, or has broken layout | Renderer input, resource permissions, or unsupported layout features. | Validate the HTML and required assets, review renderer resource settings, and test layouts against the renderer’s documented limits. |
| Worker runs out of memory or temporary storage | PDF size and chosen output path. | Compare the renderer’s stream or file output path with the current in-memory flow, and inspect the worker’s memory and temporary-disk limits. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your PDF is a capture of a web page rather than a document your PHP renderer produces, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return screenshots or PDFs; this example requests a screenshot image and does not upload it to S3. The S3 upload remains a separate application step.
