The WordPress “Allowed memory size exhausted” error means a PHP request ran out of the memory it was allowed to use. First note what action triggered it, then check the effective PHP memory limit and request an appropriate increase. If the limit is already high—or raising it does not stop the error—investigate the plugin, theme, or task using the memory instead of increasing it blindly.
What the WordPress memory exhausted error means
PHP limits how much memory an individual script can allocate. When a WordPress request reaches that ceiling while loading a page, processing an image, running an import, or performing another task, it can stop with an error such as “Allowed memory size of xxxxxx bytes exhausted.” WordPress describes this as the installation not having enough memory to complete the requested work. See WordPress’s explanation of common errors and PHP’s description of the memory_limit directive.
This is a per-script limit, not a measure of all the physical memory available on the server. A WordPress setting can request more memory, but the host’s PHP configuration may cap the request or prevent the change.
Start by recording when the error occurs
Before changing settings, copy the full error message and note the time and action that produced it. Record whether it appeared on the public site or in wp-admin, and whether it followed an update, import, image-processing task, or a particular plugin operation. A core file named in the fatal message is not, by itself, proof that WordPress core is defective; the triggering workload may be the relevant clue.

Request more memory for WordPress
If the current limit is too low for the task, WordPress can request a higher limit through constants in wp-config.php. Add or adjust them before the line that loads wp-settings.php:
define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M' );
WP_MEMORY_LIMIT applies to front-end requests. WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT is for administration work, such as editing, updates, imports, and image processing. The example requests 256M for each scope; it is not a universal requirement or a guarantee that PHP will allow that amount. WordPress documents these constants in its wp-config.php Common APIs Handbook and its wp-config editing guidance.

- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Make a backup of wp-config.php before editing it. Preserve the file’s existing formatting and PHP syntax; a misplaced line or missing semicolon can cause a separate site error.
Know which memory limit you are changing
Several values are easy to confuse. WordPress defaults and PHP’s runtime ceiling describe different settings and roles:

| Setting or guidance | Scope | Value | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|---|
WP_MEMORY_LIMIT |
WordPress front-end requests | 40M single-site default; 64M multisite default | WordPress requests the value; PHP and the host determine whether it can be applied |
WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT |
WordPress administration requests | 256M documented default | WordPress requests the value; PHP and the host determine whether it can be applied |
PHP memory_limit |
Maximum memory allocated by a PHP script | 128M PHP manual default when no php.ini is loaded; production configuration may differ |
Typically the hosting provider or server administrator |
| WordPress Hosting Handbook guidance | Host-side memory recommendation | 128M minimum; 256M recommended default; 512M or more for resource-intensive sites | Guidance, not a guarantee; the host enforces its configuration |
The WordPress Hosting Handbook calls out e-commerce, page builders, multilingual plugins, and import/export tools as examples of heavier workloads, while noting that actual needs depend on the installed theme and plugins. Its figures are undated current guidance, not measured requirements for every site. See Server Environment.
Check the effective PHP limit with your host
A WordPress constant is a request, not an override of every server restriction. If changing it has no effect, ask your host which PHP memory_limit applies to the affected request, whether an account or plan cap blocks a higher value, and which supported control changes it.

Host controls differ. PHP supports per-directory configuration through .user.ini for CGI/FastCGI; Apache-module setups use .htaccess for similar per-directory configuration. These files do not work as universal remedies, and a host may restrict or ignore them. Check PHP’s documentation on .user.ini files and core directives, then verify the effective setting with the provider. WordPress also explains host-level constraints in its PHP Optimization guidance.
If the error persists, find the source of the memory use
More memory can let a legitimate demanding task complete, but it can also hide a root cause that returns as the site gains functionality. WordPress recommends debugging the installation; it notes that memory-intensive work tied to a user action may be better handled in a cron job. Its wp-config guidance cautions that raising the limit can hide the underlying issue until more plugins or functionality are added.

Test for a plugin conflict
- Use a staging copy when possible, or choose a maintenance window if the site is business-critical.
- Deactivate all plugins and repeat the action that caused the error.
- If the error clears, reactivate plugins one at a time, repeating the same action until the failure returns.
- Investigate the plugin that coincides with the failure, including whether the task can be reduced, scheduled, or reported to its developer.
Plugin testing is a practical isolation step, not proof that every failure is caused by a plugin. If the issue remains with plugins deactivated, review the triggering task, theme, logs, and host configuration.
When to escalate
Send the host or a WordPress developer the exact fatal message, its time, the action that reproduces it, and relevant logs. Ask the host to confirm the effective PHP limit for that request and whether any account cap applies. If the limit is already high and the same failure continues, provide the reproduction details rather than continuing to raise the number without identifying the workload.
