The most flexible way to place ads inside WordPress posts is to use a compatible ad-insertion plugin with a manual AdSense ad unit. For less control, connect WordPress to AdSense with Site Kit, enable Auto ads in your AdSense account, and let Google select placements. Your theme’s built-in areas and widgets are alternatives when their available locations meet your needs.

Choose between Auto ads and manual ad units

Decide first whether Google or you should choose each in-post location. These are different AdSense workflows, not two settings that provide the same control.

Consideration Auto ads Manual ad units
Who selects placement Google automatically selects placements it considers suitable. You select the positions on the pages where ads should appear.
Setup effort Connect the site, enable Auto ads in AdSense, and allow Google to select locations. Create ad units and add them to intended locations through a plugin, theme, or widget.
Control Less direct control over the exact position, format, and frequency. More control over the ad type, size, and position.
Main review Check the resulting page for layout quality and policy compliance. Ensure every placement is clearly separate from content and navigation.

What you need before inserting an ad

  • An active AdSense account and the ad units or Auto ads configuration you intend to use.
  • Administrator access to the WordPress site.
  • A placement plan, such as between paragraphs, after a specified heading, or before the post’s conclusion.
  • A compatible implementation method: an ad plugin, a theme placement area, or a widget.

Option 1: Use Site Kit and AdSense Auto ads

Site Kit is Google’s recommended way to connect WordPress to AdSense. It can help connect the site and install the necessary AdSense code, but it does not switch on Auto ads in your AdSense account.

  1. Install and activate the official Site Kit by Google plugin from the WordPress admin area.
  2. Open the Site Kit setup flow and connect the Google account and WordPress site you use for AdSense.
  3. Complete the AdSense connection steps shown by Site Kit.
  4. Open your AdSense account, go to the Auto ads setting for the site, and confirm that Auto ads are enabled.
  5. Publish or update a post, then preview it on desktop and mobile. Review where ads appear, whether the layout has sufficient space, and whether each unit is visually distinct from the article and navigation.

Auto ads are useful when you want Google to evaluate possible locations rather than maintaining a position in every post. They are not the right choice when an exact editorial location is essential.

Option 2: Place a manual ad inside posts with a plugin

An ad-insertion plugin is generally the most flexible route for a specific in-post position without editing theme files. Google lists Advanced Ads and Ad Inserter as examples of third-party resources, not as guarantees or endorsements.

  1. Choose a plugin that supports your WordPress version, active theme, and intended AdSense format.
  2. Install it from Plugins → Add New Plugin, activate it, and read its placement documentation.
  3. Create the AdSense ad unit in AdSense and copy the supplied code exactly.
  4. In the plugin, add the code as an ad unit or code block.
  5. Choose the placement rule that matches your plan, such as insertion after a paragraph or before the post content ends. Set any device or post-type conditions the plugin provides.
  6. Save the rule, then preview representative posts while logged out if the plugin or cache affects what administrators see.

Plugin features and compatibility vary. Google states that it is not responsible for the actions of non-Google plugins; plugin-specific troubleshooting belongs with the plugin developer. Test a new rule on a low-risk post or staging site when possible, particularly if the site uses a page builder, aggressive caching, or a heavily customized theme.

Option 3: Use your theme’s areas or widgets

A theme may provide an ad area in the post template, while a widget-enabled theme may expose a sidebar or other predefined location. These methods can be simpler than a plugin, but they only support the positions and content areas the theme exposes. They may not place an ad between particular paragraphs.

  • Check the theme’s customizer, block editor template, or documented widget areas.
  • Add the ad code only to a location intended for site content or advertising.
  • Confirm that the location remains available on both desktop and mobile layouts.

How to verify an in-post placement

After implementation, inspect more than the editor preview. Use a published or preview URL and check:

  • The ad appears in the intended part of the article rather than above the title, inside navigation, or over another element.
  • The unit has adequate spacing and does not cause horizontal scrolling or overlap at narrow widths.
  • The ad is clearly distinguishable from editorial text, links, buttons, and menus.
  • The article remains readable if an ad is slow to load or does not fill its container.
  • Only the intended posts and devices receive the placement rule.

Ad blockers, consent settings, caching, and AdSense review can affect what you see. A blank space does not by itself prove that the placement rule is broken; inspect the page source and the plugin’s status information before changing multiple settings at once.

AdSense policies that affect in-post ads

Placement must protect both user understanding and policy compliance. Do not:

  • Ask readers to click ads or use arrows, labels, images, or other gimmicks to direct attention toward them.
  • Make an ad look like article text, a download control, a menu, or another site function.
  • Put an ad in a pop-up or in a position where it can be mistaken for navigation.
  • Place nearby images or design elements that misleadingly appear associated with the ad.
  • Fill a page with more advertising than substantive content.

Use clear visual separation and review the current AdSense policies before publishing, because policy wording and product behavior can change.

Choosing the right method

Use Auto ads when

  • You prefer a largely automated setup.
  • You can accept Google deciding the precise in-post locations.
  • You are prepared to review the resulting pages for layout and policy issues.

Use a manual ad unit and plugin when

  • A consistent location, such as after a particular paragraph, matters to your editorial design.
  • You need control over the ad type, size, or post conditions.
  • You are willing to maintain the plugin and check compatibility after WordPress or theme updates.

Use a theme area or widget when

  • A predefined sidebar or template location is sufficient.
  • You want fewer moving parts and do not need paragraph-level placement.

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. Confirm the AdSense account is active and the intended ad unit or Auto ads setting exists.
  2. If using Site Kit, verify the site is connected; then check Auto ads directly in AdSense because Site Kit cannot change that account setting.
  3. Check that the code was pasted completely and that the plugin rule is enabled.
  4. Review theme, page-builder, and caching compatibility; temporarily test without optimization that alters scripts or HTML.
  5. Preview on multiple screen sizes and check the browser console or plugin status for implementation errors.
  6. Contact the plugin developer for plugin behavior and Google support or documentation for AdSense account and policy issues.
