The quickest way to screenshot an HP Windows computer is to press PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen, then paste the clipboard image with Ctrl+V into Paint, Word, an email, or another image-capable app. If your HP keyboard makes Print Screen a secondary function, hold Fn while pressing it.
Windows also provides shortcuts for saving the entire display automatically, capturing only the active window, or selecting a precise region. The right shortcut depends on whether you need a quick copy, a file, or an annotated selection.
Find the Print Screen key on an HP keyboard
Look near the upper-right area of the keyboard. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, Print Scr, or Print Screen. On compact HP laptops, it can share a key with another function, such as a system control or navigation command. In that layout, the Fn key changes the shared key to its secondary action.
- Standard layout: press PrtSc once.
- Shared-function layout: press Fn+PrtSc.
- Print Screen configured for Snipping Tool: pressing the key may open the capture overlay instead of silently copying the full display.
HP keyboard designs vary by model, so use the printed label or icon on your own keyboard rather than assuming every HP laptop has the same placement.

Capture the full screen to the clipboard
- Arrange the screen exactly as you want it captured.
- Press PrtSc (or Fn+PrtSc if required).
- Open Paint, Word, an email composer, a chat app, or another program that accepts images.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the screenshot.
- Use that app’s Save or Export command if you need a file.
This method copies a static image of the entire display to the Windows clipboard. It does not create a file by itself, and there is no visible confirmation in many Windows configurations. If you copy something else before pasting, the screenshot in the clipboard is replaced.
Save the pasted image
In Paint, choose File > Save as, select PNG or another format, choose a folder, and provide a filename. PNG is a practical choice for text, menus, and interface screenshots because it keeps edges sharp.
Save a full-screen screenshot directly as a file
Press Windows+PrtSc. On an HP laptop that requires the function modifier, use Windows+Fn+PrtSc. Windows briefly dims the display and writes a PNG file to:
Pictures\Screenshots
- Open File Explorer with Windows+E.
- Select Pictures in the navigation pane.
- Open Screenshots.
- Look for a file named Screenshot followed by a number.
This shortcut captures every visible monitor as one full-screen image when Windows is configured for multiple displays. Check the Screenshots folder immediately after taking the image; if it is not there, verify that the key combination used the correct HP function layer.

Capture only the active window
To capture one program instead of the whole desktop:
- Click the window you want to capture so it is active.
- Press Alt+PrtSc (or Alt+Fn+PrtSc on a shared-key layout).
- Open Paint or another destination and press Ctrl+V.
- Save or share the pasted image.
The result contains the active window, including its visible title bar and borders, rather than the other windows behind it. This is useful for reporting an error without exposing unrelated desktop content.
Select a region with Snipping Tool
Windows+Shift+S opens the Windows screen-capture overlay. It is the most flexible built-in option when you need only part of the screen.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose a mode from the overlay: rectangular snip, free-form snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- Drag around the area, select a window, or choose the full display as appropriate.
- Use the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Annotate with the available pen, highlighter, crop, or other editing controls.
- Choose the Save button to create an image file, or use Copy to place it on the clipboard.
A rectangular snip is best for a precise box, free-form snip for an irregular shape, window snip for a single application, and full-screen snip when you want Snipping Tool’s editor instead of the direct Windows+PrtSc save path.

Use the Print Screen key to open Snipping Tool
Some Windows installations assign the Print Screen key to the capture overlay. To review that behavior, open Settings, search for Print screen, and inspect the setting named Use the Print screen key to open screen capture. Turn it on when you want PrtSc to launch Snipping Tool; turn it off when you prefer the traditional clipboard behavior. The exact Settings page can vary between Windows releases, so searching Settings is more reliable than following a version-specific menu path.

Why Print Screen appears not to work
The HP requires Fn
Try Fn+PrtSc, then paste with Ctrl+V. If that works, your model treats Print Screen as a secondary key function. Use the same modifier with the Alt or Windows combinations when you need an active-window capture or an automatic file.
The screenshot is in the clipboard, not a folder
PrtSc alone normally copies the image without saving it. Open Paint and press Ctrl+V. If you expected a file, use Windows+PrtSc instead and check PicturesScreenshots.
Print Screen opens a different tool
If the key launches Snipping Tool, use the overlay to make the capture, or change Use the Print screen key to open screen capture in Windows Settings. You can always use Windows+Shift+S to open the overlay directly.

Nothing pastes
- Press the shortcut again, then immediately test Ctrl+V in Paint.
- Confirm Paint is open and its canvas is active before pasting.
- Do not copy text or another image between the screenshot and the paste.
- Restart the application receiving the image if its clipboard handling is unresponsive.
The saved file is missing
Use File Explorer to check Pictures and then Screenshots. If your Windows account redirects Pictures to cloud storage, the folder may be under that provider’s Pictures location. Take another capture while watching for the brief screen dim; no dimming usually indicates that the Windows shortcut did not register.
Only part of a multi-monitor desktop appears
Use Snipping Tool’s full-screen mode to choose the display or region you actually need. Window snips and rectangular selections avoid accidentally including a second monitor.
Make screenshots readable and safe to share
- Close notifications, password managers, and private documents before capturing.
- For a support ticket, capture the error message and the surrounding controls that explain what happened.
- Crop unnecessary browser tabs, account names, addresses, and notification previews.
- Use annotation to circle the relevant button, but do not mark passwords or authentication codes.
- Choose PNG for text-heavy interfaces; use another format only when a destination requires it.
- Remember that a screenshot is a picture, not selectable text. If someone must copy the words, provide the original text as well.

Can I screenshot a locked or black video window with Print Screen?
A normal Print Screen capture records the visible desktop image. Protected video or DRM applications may deliberately show a blank or black area; use the application’s own still-image or export feature when available.
How do I screenshot just one monitor on an HP desktop?
Click the target monitor’s window and use an active-window capture, or press Windows+Shift+S and draw a region on that display. This avoids including the other monitor.

The standard shortcuts capture the screen image and normally do not include the pointer. Use a recorder or a capture utility with cursor inclusion when the pointer itself is important.
