The most practical way to create branded short links for a WordPress blog is to use a link-management plugin that redirects a short, readable slug on your own domain to the full article URL. PrettyLinks provides this workflow inside WordPress. Bitly’s WordPress plugin is an alternative when you prefer Bitly’s service and have an account configured for a custom domain.
What a custom short URL is
A custom short URL combines a domain you control with a short path that you choose, such as example.com/guide. The short address redirects visitors to the post’s longer permalink. Because the redirect is managed by WordPress or a connected service, you can share a memorable link without changing the article’s canonical URL.
Choose the domain before the tool
- Your existing site domain: The short link appears under the same brand as your blog.
- A separate branded domain: Useful when you want a dedicated campaign or publishing domain, but it requires owning and configuring that domain with the service you select.
The choice affects setup, account requirements and where the redirect is managed.
Method 1: Create a short link with PrettyLinks
PrettyLinks is a WordPress plugin for branded links on your own domain. Its documented features include custom or automatically generated slugs, redirect options and click tracking.

Install and activate the plugin
- In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New.
- Search for PrettyLinks, choose the plugin listing, and select Install Now, then Activate. You can also upload the plugin package if your hosting workflow requires manual installation.
- Open Settings > Permalinks and confirm that the site is using a structure other than Plain. PrettyLinks’ installation instructions identify this as a requirement for its links.
Create the redirect
- Open Pretty Links in the WordPress dashboard and follow its onboarding flow.
- Enter the complete destination URL for the post or page you want to share.
- Type a short, readable slug. Use words that describe the destination, avoid unnecessary dates or punctuation, and keep capitalization consistent. For example, a post about site backups might use backups rather than an opaque string.
- Select the redirect type that matches the purpose of the link.
- Save or publish the link, then copy the generated short URL.
Select the redirect type deliberately
| Redirect | Use it when | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 301 | The short address is intended to point permanently to the destination. | Signals a permanent redirect; changing the destination later can make the original choice misleading. |
| 302 | The destination is temporary or may change during a campaign. | Communicates a temporary redirect. |
| 307 | You need a temporary redirect and want the HTTP method preserved according to the 307 behavior. | Also represents a temporary destination. |
There is no universally correct redirect for every blog. Use a permanent type for a stable, long-term mapping and a temporary type for experiments, seasonal pages or destinations you expect to swap.
Test before sharing
- Open a private or incognito browser window.
- Visit the complete short URL, including its slug.
- Confirm that it reaches the intended post, that the address resolves without a loop or error, and that the page is publicly accessible if the link is meant for everyone.
- Click the link on a phone as well as a desktop browser when the URL will be used in social posts, printed material or messaging.
Method 2: Use Bitly’s WordPress plugin
Bitly offers a different setup: WordPress connects to your Bitly account, and Bitly manages the shortened links. Bitly’s support instructions describe authorization, post-type selection and domain selection.
- Install the Bitly plugin from the WordPress plugin area and open its settings.
- Authorize the plugin with your Bitly account when prompted.
- Choose which WordPress post types should receive short links.
- If your Bitly account has a custom domain configured, select that domain. If you do not select a custom domain, the plugin uses a bit.ly address.
- Save the settings and create or publish a post according to the plugin’s available link-generation controls.
This route depends on an external Bitly account and on the domains available in that account. Check Bitly’s current account terms and plugin compatibility before committing to it.
Which WordPress short-link option fits your blog?
| Option | Documented capabilities | Best fit when | Important check |
|---|---|---|---|
| PrettyLinks | Runs in WordPress; supports links on your own domain, custom or generated slugs, 301/302/307 redirects and click tracking. | You want to manage branded redirects from the WordPress dashboard. | Its setup instructions require a permalink structure other than Plain. |
| Bitly WordPress plugin | Account authorization, post-type selection and custom-domain selection when the Bitly account has a domain configured; otherwise uses bit.ly. | You already use Bitly or want its external link-management workflow. | Account access and custom-domain configuration are required for branded Bitly links. |
| BetterLinks | WordPress.org lists custom links, redirects, affiliate links and analytics. | You want another WordPress-based manager with redirect and analytics features. | Verify current WordPress compatibility and plan details directly before installation. |

Slug and redirect practices that prevent problems
- Make slugs readable: Prefer a short word or phrase that explains the destination and is easy to dictate.
- Avoid accidental ambiguity: Do not reuse a slug for a different campaign while old copies are still circulating.
- Keep a redirect inventory: Record the short URL, destination, owner and intended lifetime so you can update or retire links safely.
- Review tracking data responsibly: Click counts can help measure usage, but they are not an independent measure of content quality or audience outcomes.
- Retest after major changes: Plugin updates, domain moves and permalink changes can affect redirect behavior.
Common setup problems
The short URL returns an error
Check that the plugin is active, the slug was saved, and the site’s permalink setting is not Plain when using PrettyLinks. Test the link while logged out to rule out a dashboard-only view.
The link uses bit.ly instead of your brand
With Bitly, confirm that a custom domain is configured in the Bitly account and selected in the plugin. Without that configuration, the documented fallback is a bit.ly address.
The redirect reaches the wrong page
Edit the link’s destination rather than creating multiple competing slugs. Then retest in a private window and update any printed or scheduled materials if the change affects their purpose.
Bottom line
For an all-in-WordPress workflow, install PrettyLinks, use a non-Plain permalink structure, create a descriptive slug, choose a redirect type based on whether the destination is permanent or temporary, and test the result before publishing it. Choose Bitly when its account-based workflow suits you; a branded Bitly address requires a custom domain configured in that account.
