You can write with AI inside WordPress in two practical ways: install the experimental WordPress AI plugin and connect your own provider, or use Jetpack AI in a connected Block Editor site. Both can draft and revise content, but neither removes the need for editorial fact-checking.

Choose the right WordPress AI route

Decision WordPress AI plugin Jetpack AI
Where it works WordPress Block Editor with configured connectors WordPress Block Editor on a site with an active Jetpack connection
Setup Install the plugin, install a provider connector and add an API key Connect Jetpack and enable the relevant AI features
Providers Featured connector options include Anthropic, Google and OpenAI Jetpack’s integrated assistant
Maturity Experimental; WordPress recommends staging tests Supported through Jetpack documentation, with availability tied to connection, settings, usage and plan
Cost The plugin is free; provider API usage can create variable charges Free requests and paid plans are documented; verify current limits and prices
Classic Editor Not supported The Assistant Block requires the Block Editor

See WordPress’s AI plugin listing and Jetpack’s AI feature documentation for current availability.

Option 1: Set up the official WordPress AI plugin

Confirm the requirements

  • Use the Block Editor; the plugin does not support the Classic Editor.
  • Plan to test on a staging site because the plugin is labeled experimental.
  • Have an account and API key for a supported provider connector.

The plugin can expose functions such as generating titles, excerpts, featured images, alt text and other editor content after a connector is configured. Its directory entry explains the current status and provider-cost caveat: AI – WordPress plugin.

Install and configure it

  1. Install the WordPress AI plugin and a provider connector.
  2. In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings → Connectors.
  3. Configure the connector and supply the required API key. WordPress documents API-key options including an environment variable, PHP constant or database setting.
  4. Open Settings → AI, enable AI and select the features you want to expose in the editor.

Keys entered through the Connectors screen are stored as database settings and masked in the interface, but WordPress notes that they are not encrypted. Restrict administrator access and use a staging site while evaluating the setup. The complete procedure is documented in the Settings Connectors screen guide.

Option 2: Write with Jetpack AI

Check the site connection

Jetpack’s AI Assistant works in the Block Editor and requires an active Jetpack connection. A theme or another plugin can interfere with editor features, so compatibility problems should be investigated there first. The Assistant Block requirements are listed in Jetpack’s Jetpack AI Assistant Block documentation.

Use the writing actions

Jetpack AI can draft new text and transform selected content. Documented actions include changing tone, expanding or shortening text, summarizing, translating and improving wording. It can also help with content images, titles, excerpts and feedback. The exact controls and request limits can vary with the Jetpack version, enabled products, connection and plan; check Jetpack AI settings and the current Jetpack AI support page.

A reliable AI writing workflow

1. Give the assistant a bounded assignment

State the audience, purpose, format, verified facts and constraints. For example:

“Draft a 600-word first version for new WordPress users explaining how to prepare a post outline. Use these three verified steps: [steps]. Use plain English, label assumptions and do not invent statistics or quotes.”

2. Start with a small, observable task

  • Generate an outline before requesting a complete article.
  • Rewrite one paragraph for clarity or a specified reading level.
  • Create a working title, excerpt or alt-text draft.
  • Translate a selected passage, then compare it with the source.

Small requests make it easier to spot invented details and keep the output aligned with your brief.

3. Edit in WordPress, not just in the chat result

Keep the useful draft in the post’s blocks, then apply your publication’s heading hierarchy, internal style, links and accessibility conventions. Treat generated images, alt text and excerpts as starting points rather than finished metadata.

Review every AI draft before publishing

  • Facts: Check names, dates, figures, product requirements, legal or health claims and quotations against authoritative sources.
  • Links: Open every link, confirm that it supports the sentence and remove invented or irrelevant URLs.
  • Originality: Replace generic phrasing, inspect distinctive passages and ensure the article adds your own explanation.
  • Audience and voice: Adjust terminology, examples, tone and reading level for your readers.
  • Scope: Remove claims the prompt did not establish and mark genuine uncertainty instead of allowing the model to guess.
  • Accessibility: Check headings, lists, link text, image descriptions and any tables in the rendered page.

WordPress and Jetpack documentation describes what these tools can generate; it does not establish that generated text is factually reliable. Use AI as a drafting and editing aid, not as evidence.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

The AI controls do not appear

Confirm that you are editing with the Block Editor, that the plugin or Jetpack feature is enabled, and that the connector or Jetpack connection is active. Incompatible themes or plugins can affect Jetpack’s editor blocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requests fail after installation

Check the connector’s API key, provider account and usage allowance. The WordPress plugin requires a valid connector; installing the plugin alone does not provide model access.

You are using the Classic Editor

Switch to the Block Editor for either documented route. The WordPress AI plugin explicitly does not support Classic Editor, and Jetpack’s Assistant Block requires the Block Editor.

You need predictable spending

The WordPress plugin itself is free, but provider API charges vary. Jetpack offers documented free requests and paid plans whose limits and prices can change. Review the provider or Jetpack account terms before enabling AI on a busy site.

The Bottom Line

For maximum provider choice, use the WordPress AI plugin with a connector and test it on staging. For the simplest integrated writing experience, use Jetpack AI on a connected Block Editor site. In either case, publish only after checking facts, links, originality, tone and accessibility.
