Use Safari’s image menu when you need the original image file, or use Copy and Command-V when you need the picture on the clipboard. Control-click an image in Safari and choose Save Image to Downloads, Save Image As, or Add Image to Photos. If Safari does not offer an image command, try dragging the image, downloading a linked file, or taking a screenshot. These methods produce different results, so choose the one that matches where you need the image to go.
Choose what “copy” should produce
Before right-clicking, decide whether you need a file, a pasted picture, a dragged item, or only the person or object in a photo. Safari and macOS expose different commands for each result.

Save a website image as a file in Safari
Safari’s standard image menu is the most direct route when you want to keep the image on your Mac. Apple documents these commands in its guide to saving part or all of a web page in Safari.
- Open the page in Safari and wait until the image has finished loading.
- Move the pointer over the image and Control-click it. A two-finger click on a trackpad usually opens the same context menu.
- Choose one of the available commands:
- Save Image to Downloads saves immediately in Safari’s configured download folder.
- Save Image As opens a save dialog so you can choose the name and destination.
- Add Image to Photos imports the image into Photos.
- Open Finder and check the destination. If you used Downloads, select Go > Downloads or press Option-Command-L.
The exact wording and available commands can vary with the Safari version and the type of image. Apple specifically notes that some images, including CSS background images, cannot be saved through this image menu.

Change where Safari puts downloads
To control the default folder, open Safari > Settings > General and find File download location. Choose Ask for each download if you want Safari to prompt you every time, or select a fixed folder. Apple describes this setting in its instructions for downloading items from the web.
Copy an image and paste it into another app
Saving a file and copying to the clipboard are separate operations. If Safari or the page offers a Copy command, use it, then paste in the destination app:
- Control-click the image and choose Copy Image, if that command appears. Some pages instead expose Copy in an editing or context menu.
- Switch to Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, an image editor, or another app that accepts images.
- Click where the image should appear and press Command-V, or choose Edit > Paste.
macOS’s general copy-and-paste behavior is described by Apple in How to copy and paste on Mac. The app and the current context determine what can be copied and pasted, so a visible picture does not guarantee that a Copy Image command will be available. If no copy command appears, use Save Image, dragging, a linked download, or a screenshot instead.
Drag the image to a document or the desktop
Safari can drag some images directly into another location. Open the destination first, then drag the image from the webpage to a document, Finder folder, or the desktop. Hold Option while you drag when you want a copy rather than a move. Apple’s explanation of this modifier and other drag behavior is in Drag and drop items on Mac.

Drag behavior depends on the image and destination. A page may display a picture that is actually a CSS background, a canvas drawing, or another element that Safari cannot treat as a draggable image. If the pointer changes back without placing anything, return to the image menu or try a linked download.
Add an image to Photos
When you want the picture in your Photos library rather than as a loose file, Control-click the image and select Add Image to Photos. This option may not appear for every page element. After choosing it, open Photos and check the recent imports or the library search to confirm that the item arrived.
Copy only the subject of a photo
Copy Subject is a different feature from copying the whole image. In Safari, Control-click an open photo and choose Copy Subject when it is offered. Safari isolates the main subject so you can paste it into a document, email, message, or note. Apple says the command can take a few seconds to appear; wait briefly after opening the context menu if you do not see it. Use Save Image or Copy Image when you need the entire photograph, including its background. Use Copy Subject only when the cut-out object is what you want.

When Safari will not let you save the image
The picture is a background or embedded element
CSS backgrounds, canvas drawings, and some other page elements do not appear as downloadable images in Safari’s context menu. There may be no original file exposed to the browser’s normal Save Image command.
The page offers a link to an image file
If the visible picture is a link, Control-click it and choose Download Linked File. Safari downloads whatever file the link targets. A link can point to a resized version, a generated image, or another document, so this method does not promise the same asset you see on screen. Apple notes that some webpage items cannot be downloaded even this way.
The page blocks ordinary interaction
Some webpages disable or intercept context menus and drag operations. Do not assume that a browser restriction means the image is missing; it may simply prevent the normal menu from appearing. Try opening the image in its own tab if the page provides an Open Image link, then Control-click the standalone image. If the page still provides no save or copy route, use a screenshot for a visual record.
Use a screenshot as a last-resort visual capture
macOS can capture the visible screen when you need to preserve what is displayed rather than obtain the original image file. A screenshot is useful for a rendered chart, a background image, or a page that does not expose a downloadable asset. It may include surrounding page content, browser controls, scaling, or overlays, and it does not guarantee the source image’s original dimensions, format, or metadata. For a clean capture, first zoom or resize the page so the image is visible at the size you need, close consent banners and pop-ups, and then take the screenshot. Crop the result afterward if necessary. If you need the page rendered repeatedly or from code, an API can avoid the manual browser steps.

Options useful for image captures
- Capture the full page, including lazy-loaded images, or capture one element with a CSS selector.
- Select PNG, JPEG, or WebP output, a device preset, any viewport size, and a retina scale.
- Use dark mode, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, custom CSS, or JavaScript.
- Click an element before capture, hide selectors, or wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle.
- Block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; provide custom headers, cookies, a user agent, or an Authorization header.
- Set timezone and geolocation, choose caching with your own TTL, create signed links for public image tags, submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, and query usage through the usage API.
These controls help when the image appears only after interaction, lazy loading, authentication, or a particular viewport. They still produce a rendering of the page, not a promise that the site’s original image file will be returned.

Which method should you use?
- Choose Save Image As when you need a reusable file in a known folder.
- Choose Copy Image and Command-V when the immediate destination is another app.
- Choose drag and drop for a quick placement, using Option when you need a copy.
- Choose Add Image to Photos for library organization.
- Choose Copy Subject only for an isolated object rather than the entire photograph.
- Choose a screenshot when the page exposes no downloadable image and the visible rendering is enough.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Download Linked File always give me the highest-resolution image?
No. It downloads the file addressed by the link, which may be a resized image, a generated asset, or another document. The link target determines what Safari receives.
Why is a screenshot different from saving the image?
A screenshot records pixels currently displayed on your screen. Saving an image retrieves an asset exposed by the webpage, so it can preserve a different format, size, or surrounding metadata.
Can I use Copy Subject to preserve the whole photograph?
No. Copy Subject extracts the main subject. Use Copy Image or Save Image when you need the complete photo and its background.
