A dark browser toolbar does not necessarily make a third-party webpage dark.
Choose the right kind of dark mode
“Dark mode” can mean three different things. Identifying which one you need prevents the common mistake of changing Chrome or Windows while the page itself stays white.

For a news story or documentation page, start with Reading mode or Edge Immersive Reader. For a dashboard, checkout page or interactive map, use the site’s own theme if available; simplified readers are likely to remove important controls.
Turn on dark mode in Chrome
Darken Chrome’s interface
- Open a new tab.
- Select Customize Chrome.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Dark, Light or Device. Device follows your computer’s current theme.
Google describes this setting as darkening the homepage, toolbar, settings and some other Chrome pages. It is not a promise that every third-party website will change its page background.

Use Chrome Reading mode for an article
Open the browser’s Reading mode when it is available for the page, then use its Color theme control to select a dark palette. You can also adjust font family, font size, line height, letter spacing, link visibility and image visibility. Reading mode includes read-aloud controls, including playback speed and highlighting.
Reading mode is not available for every website. It can fail or be unsuitable for image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages and login screens. If a page is incomplete in the reader, close it and use the original page with the site’s theme or an extension limited to that domain.
Turn on dark mode in Microsoft Edge
Darken Edge itself
- Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Under Overall appearance, choose Dark.
Edge’s dark theme changes its default bright interface background. A website can still retain its own white CSS background.
Use Immersive Reader for long pages
When a page supports Immersive Reader, open it from Edge’s address-bar or page controls and select a dark page theme. This is designed for focused reading and is usually more useful than darkening the browser frame alone. Expect reduced or missing functionality on highly interactive applications.

Firefox provides website-appearance and contrast preferences that can influence how pages are displayed. Treat them as preference and contrast tools rather than a guarantee that every site will be fully recolored. Windows High Contrast and related accessibility settings can override or alter custom website colors, so check those settings if a page looks unexpectedly high-contrast or unchanged.

For a single article, Firefox’s built-in reader view (where offered) is generally safer than applying a global forced style: it keeps the text-focused content while avoiding many layout conflicts.
How to force dark mode on a website
First, find the site’s own control
Look in the header, account menu, accessibility menu or settings for a sun/moon icon, Theme, Appearance or Dark. Site-provided themes know the page’s components and are least likely to break charts, buttons or media.
Use a reading view when the goal is reading
For a long article, a reading view can deliver a dark background plus larger text, line spacing and read-aloud controls without changing the entire site. It is the best compromise when you need comfort and typography control more than the original layout.
Install a reputable forced-dark extension only when necessary
Dark Reader is one option listed in the Chrome Web Store. Its 2026 listing reports 7,000,000 users. Install extensions only from the browser’s official store, review the permissions, and use the extension’s per-site exclusion feature for pages that render incorrectly.
Forced styling can invert or recolor photographs, video controls, maps, code samples, payment forms and authentication widgets. A practical workflow is to enable it globally, then disable it for broken domains rather than trying to repair every component manually.

Why the browser is dark but the website is still white
- Different layers: the browser theme changes menus and toolbars; the page has its own HTML and CSS.
- No theme support: the site may not respond to your operating-system preference or the CSS
prefers-color-schemesignal. - Per-site override: the website may deliberately force a light palette for branding or readability.
- Mixed application: an app may darken its shell but leave an embedded document, checkout frame or third-party widget light.
- Accessibility override: high-contrast settings can replace the site’s selected colors.
Try the site’s own switch, then Reading mode or Immersive Reader. If the original page must remain intact and is still bright, use a forced-dark extension with a domain exclusion strategy.
Developer check: test dark-mode CSS in Edge
Edge DevTools can emulate prefers-color-scheme: dark or light. Open DevTools, open the rendering or emulation controls, and select the color-scheme preference. This lets you inspect whether a page responds to the media query without changing the whole computer’s theme.

For production, a site should define readable foreground and background colors, focus indicators, borders, form controls and media treatment for both schemes.
Best approach for long articles and accessibility
Choose based on the control you need rather than assuming darker always means better.
- Need only less-bright browser chrome: use Chrome, Edge or Firefox’s interface theme.
- Need distraction-free reading: use Chrome Reading mode or Edge Immersive Reader and select a dark color theme.
- Need larger type or spacing: prefer a reading view because it exposes font size, line height and letter spacing controls.
- Need read-aloud: Chrome Reading mode provides playback speed and highlighting controls.
- Need the complete application: keep the original page and use its own theme; a reader may remove controls.
- Need stronger contrast: use the browser or operating-system contrast features, then verify links, focus states and disabled controls.
No authoritative figure establishes a universal reduction in eye strain from dark mode. Comfort depends on ambient light, contrast, font size, glare and the individual reader. If text blooms, gray-on-gray contrast is weak or icons disappear, switch themes or increase contrast instead of forcing a darker palette.

Fix common dark-mode problems
The page remains completely white
Confirm that you changed the page rather than only the browser frame. Look for a site theme switch, open Reading mode, or enable a reputable extension for that domain.
Recommended Free Tools
Text or links become unreadable
Turn off the forced extension for the site and return to the site’s theme or reading view. If you control the site, test normal, visited, hover, focus and disabled states under both color schemes.
Images, charts or videos look inverted
Disable image inversion or exclude the domain in the extension. Reading views may omit the media entirely; use the original page when the visual is part of the explanation.
Forms, maps or checkout stop working
Leave Reading mode and use the full page. Simplified readers are not intended for payment pages, login screens, interactive maps, quizzes or complex forms.
High-contrast settings override your choice
Check the operating system’s contrast settings and Firefox’s website-appearance preferences. Accessibility overrides can take precedence over author-defined colors.

A page flashes white before becoming dark
This is usually a late-applied theme or extension style. A site developer can reduce the flash by setting an early color-scheme and background, while readers can prefer the site’s native theme or a reader view.

Does dark mode work on every website?
No. Browser interface themes do not control arbitrary page CSS, and reading mode is unavailable on some sites. Use the site’s own theme, a reader view or a domain-specific extension depending on the page.
Is a dark extension safer than forcing colors with custom CSS?
A maintained extension from the official store is generally easier to manage, but it can still disrupt images, widgets and forms. Exclude domains where the original theme works better.
Can I make a screenshot show a dark website without changing my monitor?
