Those options return different data and are not interchangeable. This guide identifies ten candidates to investigate, but the available evidence does not establish a defensible “best” ranking across all ten. Choose by data source, licensing, freshness, coverage and cost—not by the label alone.
What people mean by “Google News API”
Before comparing providers, separate three different jobs that the phrase can describe:
- Search and headline APIs: services that expose news articles through endpoints for searches, top headlines or both. Their indexes, rankings, fields and update schedules depend on the provider.
- Google News result extraction: a tool that retrieves or parses results shown by Google News. Confirm that a provider actually sources Google News results; a general news API is not proof of access to Google’s news ranking.
- Publisher feeds: RSS or Atom feeds made available by individual publishers. A feed lets an app read that publisher’s items; it is not a search of Google’s entire news index.
Google’s Data APIs documentation covers Atom and RSS protocols for a limited set of older APIs and explicitly cautions that most Google APIs are not Google Data APIs. It should not be read as documentation for a general Google News search API. Likewise, Google Search Central says sites are automatically considered for Google News and news surfaces, while Publisher Center can manage publication details; using it does not guarantee that a publisher will appear. That is a publisher workflow, not a general-purpose retrieval API.
Ten candidates to investigate—not a verified top-ten ranking
The names below are a discovery list, not a claim that each has a current, comparable API, Google News access, or suitable production license. Apart from the specific details for NewsAPI and GNews below, comparable first-party evidence for current endpoints, coverage, terms and pricing is not established here. Verify those details with each provider before selecting or integrating it.

| Candidate | What this guide can establish | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| The Guardian API | Named as a candidate in a 2026 news-API discovery guide. | Current endpoints, coverage, fields, freshness, quotas, pricing and commercial-use terms. |
| NewsData.io | Named as a candidate in the same discovery guide. | Current endpoints, source coverage, language and region filters, full-text availability, quotas, pricing and licensing. |
| NewsAPI | Documents article discovery through Everything and breaking headlines through Top headlines. Its documented filters include query, date, source, language, country, category and source identifier. | Whether its limits, allowed use, coverage and paid plan fit your application. Its free Developer plan is restricted to development and testing. |
| GNews | Documents search and top-headline endpoints, including Google News-ranked top headlines. | Whether its current plan limits, freshness, coverage and terms fit your use case; do not assume other endpoints return the same ranking. |
| Mediastack | Named as a candidate in the 2026 discovery guide. | Current API documentation, coverage, freshness, fields, production rights and pricing. |
| Currents | Named as a candidate in the 2026 discovery guide. | Current API documentation, coverage, freshness, fields, production rights and pricing. |
| Newscatcher | Named as a candidate in the 2026 discovery guide. | Current API documentation, coverage, freshness, fields, production rights and pricing. |
| Webz.io | Named as a candidate in the 2026 discovery guide. | Current API documentation, coverage, freshness, fields, production rights and pricing. |
| Publisher RSS or Atom feeds | A way to read items exposed by an individual publisher; not a query against Google News’s full index. | Whether each publisher offers a feed, what it contains, update cadence, and applicable reuse terms. |
| Google News result extraction tools | A category to investigate if the actual requirement is Google News results, rather than a general news corpus. | Provider identity, data source, supported fields, stability, access method, terms and whether results reflect Google News ranking. |
The 2026 discovery guide also names eight providers in the table; it is useful for finding candidates, not for proving that they are the ten best or that their products are equivalent. In particular, no provider-wide comparison of source count, accuracy or latency is established here.
What the documented NewsAPI and GNews plans tell you
Only NewsAPI and GNews have enough specific plan detail here for a meaningful side-by-side comparison. These are provider-published limits and prices surfaced on September 30, 2026; they can change, so confirm them on the providers’ current pages before budgeting.
| Provider and offering | Documented allowance or behavior | Price and use qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NewsAPI Developer | 100 requests per day; articles are served with a 24-hour delay. | Free, for development and testing only. NewsAPI says the plan cannot be used in staging or production, including internally. |
| NewsAPI Business | Comparable request, freshness and coverage details are not stated here. | $449 per month, billed monthly, as listed on September 30, 2026. |
| NewsAPI Advanced | Comparable request, freshness and coverage details are not stated here. | $1,749 per month, billed monthly, as listed on September 30, 2026. |
| GNews free plan | 100 requests per day, up to 10 articles per request, a 12-hour delay and 30 days of history. | Free-plan figures stated in GNews’s FAQ as surfaced September 30, 2026. Check current plan terms before relying on them. |
Do not compare the two free limits as if they describe the same data or allowed use. NewsAPI expressly limits Developer to development and testing; GNews’s stated quota and delay alone do not establish whether a particular production use is permitted. Read the applicable license and terms for your intended application.

How to choose an API for your application
Start with the data you actually need
- If you need broad article discovery by topic or date, look for a documented search endpoint and inspect its query and date filters.
- If you need current headlines, verify that a top-headlines endpoint exists, what sources it covers and how often it updates.
- If you specifically need Google News-ranked results, require the provider to document that behavior. GNews documents Google News-ranked top headlines; do not assume its search endpoint, or another provider’s general corpus, has the same ranking.
- If you only need a few publishers, their feeds may be simpler, but each feed represents that publisher’s available items—not Google News’s overall index.
Check coverage, response shape and freshness
Compare the countries, languages and sources you need, along with available fields and whether full article text is actually provided. Ask how historical search works, whether results are delayed, and how quickly new stories become available. A provider’s query endpoint, headline endpoint and Google News-ranked endpoint can each have different behavior. Do not treat a common “news API” label as evidence of a shared corpus or ranking.

Clear licensing before a prototype becomes a product
Confirm whether your intended use is permitted: development, staging, internal use, public display, redistribution, archiving and commercial use can be treated differently. NewsAPI’s free Developer plan is explicitly limited to development and testing and cannot be used in staging or production, even internally. A successful API call is not a license to republish article text or images.
Model cost around real request volume
Estimate requests per day and month, articles returned per request, refresh cadence and any historical queries. Compare those needs with the provider’s current quota and overage or upgrade terms. The NewsAPI prices above are listed monthly prices surfaced September 30, 2026, not a promise that the amounts or plan features will remain unchanged. GNews’s free allowance has a stated delay and per-request article cap, which may be unsuitable when immediacy or batch size matters.
Rank #3
A practical evaluation checklist
- Write down the required source: Google News-ranked results, a provider’s own news corpus, or particular publisher feeds.
- List the queries and geography: required languages, countries, sources, categories and date range.
- Define freshness: how old an article may be before it is no longer useful, and whether delayed data is acceptable.
- Inspect returned fields: confirm that the documented response contains the metadata your application needs, and establish whether article text is available and licensed for your use.
- Check endpoint constraints: NewsAPI documents constraints on combining country/category filters with source filters. Test the combinations your product needs rather than assuming filters can always be combined.
- Read production terms: record permitted environments, display and storage rules, attribution obligations and redistribution restrictions.
- Test representative queries: compare returned items against your actual editorial or product requirements, not a generic demo query.
- Recheck pricing and limits: confirm current quotas, delays, history and costs with the provider before launch.
Implementation notes and common failure points
The information available for this comparison does not establish exact API URLs, authentication parameters, response schemas or runnable requests for NewsAPI, GNews or the other named candidates. Use each provider’s current official documentation for those details rather than copying a guessed endpoint or relying on an old code sample.
- A query returns no articles: check date bounds, spelling, language, country and source filters. If using NewsAPI, review its documented restrictions on combining source filters with country or category filters.
- Results seem stale: check whether the selected plan has a delay. The stated free NewsAPI Developer delay is 24 hours; GNews’s free-plan FAQ states 12 hours. These are plan-specific published figures, not a guarantee for every plan or endpoint.
- Expected Google ranking is absent: confirm that the particular endpoint promises Google News-ranked results. GNews documents that for its top-headline feature; do not infer it for every provider or endpoint.
- A prototype works but deployment is blocked: examine environment restrictions and production licensing. NewsAPI Developer is not permitted for staging or production.
- Filters fail together: consult endpoint-specific filter-combination rules. A provider may reject combinations that appear reasonable in isolation.
- Article body is missing: verify full-text availability and rights before designing around article extraction. Headline metadata does not establish that a provider supplies or licenses full text.
ScreenshotNeo is not a news API
For news search, headlines or structured article data, evaluate the news providers above. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server—not a news index or article-search service. It can be useful when your separate task is capturing a webpage, such as a rendered news page, rather than retrieving structured news data. Its clean captures accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. It also offers MCP tools for AI agents: take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf. See ScreenshotNeo for product details.

Which option should you shortlist?
For general article discovery or breaking headlines, begin by checking NewsAPI’s documented endpoints and production terms, then compare them with GNews’s search and Google News-ranked headline offerings if that ranking is important. If you need another provider, use the candidate list as a starting point and validate its current documentation, licensing, limits and data source. No evidence here supports a universal winner across ten providers; the right choice depends on whether you need a specific ranking, corpus, freshness window, geography and permitted use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google offer an official Google News search API?
The information established here identifies Google publisher guidance and legacy feed-protocol documentation, not a general Google News search API. Treat products sold as news APIs or Google News extractors as separate provider offerings and verify what each actually returns.
Best Value
Can I use RSS instead of a news API?
Yes, when the feeds of the publishers you need are sufficient. RSS or Atom exposes a publisher’s available items; it does not search Google News’s full index.
Which service provides Google News-ranked headlines?
GNews documents Google News-ranked top headlines. Confirm the endpoint and current plan terms directly with GNews if that ranking is a requirement.
