Rename the copy before you make changes so it is easy to distinguish from the original.
Install Yoast Duplicate Post
You can install the plugin from the WordPress dashboard or upload it manually. Yoast’s WordPress.org listing describes the plugin as a way to clone posts or copy them to new drafts; its documentation covers installation and settings.
- In the dashboard, go to Plugins > Add New.
- Search for Duplicate Post, then select Install and Activate.
- To adjust its behavior, go to Settings > Duplicate Post.
If you are installing manually, download the plugin archive, upload the duplicate-post directory to /wp-content/plugins/, and activate it from the Plugins screen. Check the version and compatibility information shown for the installed plugin before proceeding: Yoast’s March 9, 2026 release article describes version 4.6, while the WordPress.org repository README lists stable tag 4.7. Those sources therefore do not show identical release metadata.
Duplicate one page or post
- In the dashboard, open Posts or Pages.
- Hover over the item you want to copy.
- Select Clone to create the copy and return to the list, or select New Draft to create a copy and open it for editing.
- Change the copy’s title, edit its content, and publish it when it is ready.
The duplicate is a separate item; editing it does not replace the original. The Clone and New Draft choices differ mainly in what happens next: one leaves you at the list, while the other opens the new draft. The plugin also offers Copy to a new draft from the editor or admin bar. Yoast’s March 9, 2026 article describes version 4.6 controls in the Block Editor sidebar, including bordered buttons for Copy to a new draft and Rewrite & Republish; the exact placement can vary with plugin version and interface.
Duplicate several items at once
For multiple pages or posts, use the list screen’s bulk actions rather than opening each item individually.
- Open Posts or Pages.
- Select the items to copy using the list checkboxes.
- Open Bulk Actions and choose the cloning action.
- Apply the action, then review the resulting copies and rename them clearly.
Revise a live page without taking it offline
If your goal is to update existing published content—not create a separate new page—use Rewrite & Republish. Yoast’s Rewrite & Republish instructions describe choosing that option from the Posts overview or the editor’s Duplicate post menu. Edit the duplicate, then use the workflow to republish the changes to the existing item. Yoast says this lets you rewrite a post or page without taking it offline; its instructions also apply to pages and other custom post types.

Developer note: tracing a copy
For developers, Yoast documents filters, actions, functions, and template tags for extending the plugin. It also stores the original post ID in the _dp_original custom field when it creates a copy, which can help identify the source item. See the developer documentation for implementation details.
