The service documentation, checked September 30, 2026, sets a maximum of 80,000 pixels for either dimension and a separate 400-million-pixel limit for the whole image. “Without quality loss” describes the vendor’s tiled-rendering approach and preservation of the requested device scale; it is not a promise that the output can be 80,000 by 80,000 pixels, or that the feature can enlarge an existing raster image without losing detail.
What Jumbo Images does—and what “without quality loss” means
Jumbo Images is a mode in HTML/CSS to Image for making unusually large screenshots from HTML or a webpage. Instead of asking Chrome to render one enormous image in a single pass, the service’s guide says it renders separate 8,000-by-8,000-pixel tiles in Chrome and stitches them together. The guide says this approach preserves the requested device_scale rather than shrinking one oversized render after capture. That is the basis for its claim that you can scale beyond standard output without sacrificing quality.
Read that claim narrowly: it concerns rendering web content with the service’s tiled method. It is not an independent image-quality test, nor a way to recover detail from an existing small JPG or PNG. Enlarging a raster image requires filling in new pixels; Brightspot’s image-editing documentation illustrates this with a 100-by-100 image enlarged to 300-by-300, which adds 80,000 pixels. Jumbo Images instead renders HTML or webpage content at the requested scale.
The relevant vendor documentation is HTML/CSS to Image’s Jumbo Images guide and API parameter documentation. Its stated limits and behavior below were checked September 30, 2026.

Limits: 80,000 per side, but 400 million pixels total
The 80,000-pixel figure is a per-dimension ceiling, not permission to request an 80,000-by-80,000 image. The width multiplied by the height cannot exceed 400,000,000 pixels. Both jumbo_max_width and jumbo_max_height must be supplied, and at least one of them must be greater than 8,000 pixels to invoke Jumbo Images.
| Constraint | Documented value | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum width or height | 80,000 pixels for each dimension | Neither requested maximum may exceed 80,000. |
| Maximum image area | 400,000,000 pixels | Multiply width by height; a pair can satisfy the per-side limit and still exceed the area cap. |
| Minimum dimension | 1 pixel | Each maximum must be at least 1 pixel. |
| Jumbo activation | At least one maximum must be over 8,000 pixels | If both are 8,000 or less, use the standard render path instead. |
| Required parameters | jumbo_max_width and jumbo_max_height |
Set both together; neither is optional when using Jumbo Images. |
The guide gives these combinations as examples at the 400-million-pixel area ceiling: 80,000 × 5,000, 40,000 × 10,000, 20,000 × 20,000, and 12,500 × 32,000. For another proposed size, multiply the two maxima before sending the request. For example, 30,000 × 15,000 is 450,000,000 pixels, so it exceeds the area limit even though neither side exceeds 80,000.
How to choose the maximum dimensions
- Estimate the final rendered size. Consider the page’s content, orientation, and requested device scale. A tall report may need much more height than width; a timeline or wide infographic may need the opposite.
- Account for
device_scale. The Jumbo Images guide says this scale is applied before the jumbo dimensions are measured. If the desired final image is 5,000 × 2,000 at 2×, set maxima of at least 10,000 × 4,000. This is 40,000,000 pixels, within the documented cap, and the width exceeds 8,000. - Set both jumbo maxima. Include
jumbo_max_widthandjumbo_max_heightin the HTML/CSS to Image API request. Ensure each is between 1 and 80,000, at least one is greater than 8,000, and their product is no greater than 400,000,000. - Check the actual output. The maxima are bounds, not a promise to fill the entire rectangle. The renderer may return a smaller image when the natural page output does not occupy the requested bounds.
For example, if the target is a long page whose rendered content is 12,000 pixels tall and 1,400 pixels wide, maxima of 1,600 × 14,000 allow some width and height headroom while remaining within the area cap (22,400,000 pixels). If the page’s natural output is only 9,500 pixels tall, the resulting image can be shorter than the 14,000-pixel maximum. If natural output is larger than the available bounds, the service scales it down to fit while preserving its aspect ratio.

Do not request a square maximum just because the per-side ceiling is 80,000. An 80,000 × 80,000 request would be 6.4 billion pixels, far above the 400-million-pixel cap.

When to use Jumbo Images instead of a standard render
| Situation | Standard render | Jumbo Images |
|---|---|---|
| Both output dimensions fit within one 8,000-pixel tile | The guide presents standard rendering as cheaper and faster for this case. | Usually unnecessary if standard output meets the quality and size requirements. |
| A page or graphic must exceed roughly 8,000 pixels in one dimension | The guide says standard output can be scaled down to fit Chrome’s limit, which may soften text and fine lines. | Designed for large outputs, using separate tiles that are stitched together. |
| Fine text, thin rules, or detail at a specified device scale matter | An oversized standard result may be reduced and appear blurry. | The guide says tiled rendering preserves the requested device_scale; this is the vendor’s explanation, not an independent benchmark. |
| PDF is required | Use the service’s relevant PDF workflow. | Jumbo output is image-only and cannot be combined with pdf_options. |
| Additional rendering cost matters | Standard rendering is the lower-resource choice when it fits. | Uses additional image credits because rendering, stitching, and storing the tiles uses more resources. |
The guide recommends Jumbo Images for long marketing pages, full-site captures, scrollable dashboards, print-resolution graphics, wide infographics, timelines, charts, and tables when a standard result would exceed roughly 8,000 pixels. Use it when the large canvas is essential, not merely because the option exists.
Formats, PDF compatibility, and credit usage
The Jumbo Images API documentation lists PNG, JPG, and WebP output. Jumbo capture is image-only: it cannot be combined with pdf_options. If the deliverable must be a PDF, do not assume that enabling jumbo parameters will produce one; choose the service’s PDF path instead.

Jumbo requests consume more image credits than a standard request. The guide gives this render-count formula based on the maximum output dimensions: 1 + ceil(width / 8000) * ceil(height / 8000), plus any cost associated with ms_delay. This is a render-count formula, not a monetary quote; the available documentation does not establish a dollar price here. Because it uses the requested maxima, setting unnecessarily large bounds can increase resource use even if the page’s natural content is smaller. Keep maxima close to the size you actually need and confirm current plan billing with HTML/CSS to Image before relying on a budget estimate.
Why a large screenshot may look blurry or come back smaller
Blurry output without jumbo parameters
The vendor’s troubleshooting guidance says standard rendering may be scaled down when its natural output exceeds roughly 8,000 pixels, the stated Chrome limit for this workflow. Downscaling can make small text and thin lines look soft. If the capture needs to remain unusually tall or wide, set both jumbo maxima and verify the requested device scale is reflected in those bounds. Jumbo rendering is not a way to sharpen a blurry source image or compensate for content that is inherently low resolution.

jumbo_max_width and jumbo_max_height are maximum bounds, not fixed output dimensions. If the page’s natural output is smaller, the result is smaller. If the natural output exceeds the bounds, it is scaled down to fit while retaining its aspect ratio. Check the returned image’s actual dimensions and the page content before increasing maxima; a larger bound cannot make nonexistent page content appear.

Request rejected or unexpectedly treated as standard
- Confirm that both jumbo parameters are present in the same request.
- Check that neither dimension is below 1 or above 80,000.
- Multiply the maxima and keep the area at or below 400,000,000 pixels.
- Make sure at least one maximum is greater than 8,000; otherwise the request does not meet the guide’s Jumbo activation condition.
- When using
device_scale, calculate bounds after applying the scale, as in the guide’s 5,000 × 2,000 at 2× example.
Need a PDF rather than an image
Remove the assumption that jumbo mode can be combined with pdf_options: the guide says it cannot. Decide whether the deliverable is a tiled raster image or a PDF and use the compatible output mode for that goal.
What Jumbo Images cannot do
Jumbo Images renders HTML or webpage content in tiles; it is not a general-purpose raster upscaler. A 100 × 100 source bitmap expanded to 300 × 300 still needs 80,000 extra pixels to be filled somehow, as Brightspot’s example demonstrates. By contrast, a web page can be rendered from its underlying text, vector graphics, layout, and assets at the requested device scale before the tiles are stitched. The source content still matters: raster assets embedded in the page do not magically gain original detail when rendered larger.
Nor does the 80,000 figure describe an 80,000-pixel square, guaranteed final dimensions, or an independent measurement that proves no visual degradation in every page. Treat it as the service’s documented per-side maximum subject to the total-area cap, natural content size, and scale-to-fit behavior.

For a regular screenshot request, ScreenshotNeo can return an image with one GET call; that is a different workflow from HTML/CSS to Image’s Jumbo Images mode. Its documented ScreenshotNeo features do not establish that it accepts jumbo_max_width or jumbo_max_height or supports the same 80,000-pixel tiled output, so use the Jumbo Images API when those limits and behavior are specifically required.
