To copy words from a picture, use optical character recognition (OCR): it converts text shown in an image into selectable text. For a browser-based option, upload a JPEG, PNG, GIF, or PDF to Google Drive, right-click it, choose Open with → Google Docs, then copy the recognized text beneath the image. On a supported iPhone or iPad, Apple Live Text can select text directly in an image without uploading it to an OCR website.
Choose the method that fits your image

OCR reads visible characters; it does not guarantee an exact transcription or preserve a document’s original layout. Proofread the output, especially names, numbers, addresses, and legal or financial details.
Copy image text online with Google Drive
Google Drive can convert image files to text by opening them with Google Docs. This is a practical choice when you have a browser and want to copy text from a photo or scanned document. Google’s guidance recommends a file size of 2 MB or less, upright text at least 10 pixels high, common fonts, and a sharp, evenly lit, high-contrast image.
- Prepare a JPEG, PNG, GIF, or PDF. If practical, keep it at or below Google’s recommended 2 MB file size.
- Check that the text is upright, sharp, evenly lit, and high contrast. Crop unnecessary background if it makes the text harder to read.
- Upload the file to Google Drive.
- In Drive, right-click the file and choose Open with → Google Docs.
- In the document that opens, find the extracted text beneath the original image and copy the text you need.
- Compare the copied text against the image and fix recognition errors. Do not assume the original spacing or formatting has been retained.
For multipage PDFs, check the resulting document page by page. A poor scan, small lettering, unusual fonts, or a crooked page can make parts of the text difficult to recognize.

Copy text on iPhone or iPad with Live Text
Live Text is Apple’s built-in option for selecting text in supported images. It requires an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later and iOS 15 or later. The image can be in Photos or another supported app; Live Text also recognizes information in video frames and images found online.
- Open the photo or image in Photos or a supported app. For a video frame, pause on the frame containing the text.
- Touch and hold a word in the image.
- Drag the selection handles to include the text you want.
- Tap Copy. To select all detected text, tap Select All when it is offered.
- Paste the result into your destination app and proofread it against the image.
If holding a word does not select it, the image may be too blurry, the text may be too small or stylized, or the device or software may not meet the requirements. Use a clearer image or try one of the other methods below.
Use OneNote desktop to copy text from a picture
OneNote desktop has a direct Copy Text from Picture command. Microsoft says recognition effectiveness depends on image quality and legibility. Handwritten or highly stylized script may not work well, particularly according to Microsoft’s Mac guidance.

- Insert or paste the picture into OneNote desktop.
- Right-click the picture, or Control-click it on a Mac.
- Choose Copy Text from Picture.
- Paste the text into OneNote, Word, an email, or another app.
For a multipage printout, OneNote can copy text from the current page or all pages. OneNote for the web does not provide this copy command directly; use the Windows or Mac desktop app instead.

Make a scanned PDF searchable or selectable
A scanned PDF may contain page images rather than actual text. In that case, ordinary text selection will not work until OCR has been run. Choose a workflow based on whether you need to copy a passage or create a searchable document.
OneDrive mobile: recognize text on a scanned page
- Open the scanned PDF in the OneDrive mobile app.
- Long-press the page.
- Tap Recognize text and wait for processing to finish.
- Select or copy the text, then check it against the scan.
Adobe Acrobat: run Scan & OCR
- Open the scanned PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
- Choose Scan & OCR and run recognition.
- Review unclear words and correct any mistakes before relying on the text.
Acrobat analyzes the scanned image and adds searchable text. OCR can make image-based pages searchable, but it cannot ensure that every character was interpreted correctly.

Improve OCR results before you copy
The quality of the source image strongly affects recognition. Before uploading or processing it, make the page as easy to read as possible:
- Use a sharp image. Retake or rescan a blurred page rather than expecting OCR to infer missing character shapes.
- Keep the text upright. Rotate a sideways or upside-down image before processing.
- Improve contrast and lighting. Avoid shadows, glare, uneven lighting, and backgrounds that blend into the letters.
- Make text larger. Google recommends text at least 10 pixels high for its Drive conversion guidance; tiny lettering can be difficult for OCR to distinguish.
- Crop distractions. Keep the relevant content in frame while removing irrelevant background where possible.
- Be cautious with handwriting and decorative fonts. Stylized characters are harder to recognize reliably than clear, conventional print.
- Proofread critical details. Confusable characters can change an account number, date, address, amount, or name.
There is no established universal “most accurate” method in the official guidance summarized here. Results can vary with image quality, language, handwriting, layout, and the recognition system. Test the workflow on a representative page and verify the output when errors would matter.

Protect private information
Cloud-based OCR means sending an image to a service provider. Consider what is visible before uploading identity documents, medical records, financial statements, or confidential work, and check the service’s current privacy and retention terms. Microsoft’s OneNote for Mac guidance says its OCR uses Microsoft online services. Google also warns that OCR can make text visible in images searchable; obscure confidential details before publishing a redacted image, rather than relying on the fact that the text is embedded in a picture.

If an image contains sensitive information, prefer a workflow and service whose handling terms you have checked. For material that must remain confidential, avoid uploading it to a cloud service unless that use is permitted by your policies.

- Google Docs opens, but no useful text appears: Check whether the file is an eligible image or PDF, and improve sharpness, orientation, lighting, contrast, and text size. Google’s stated 2 MB size is a recommendation, not a guarantee of successful recognition.
- The copied text has missing or substituted characters: Zoom in on the original. Retake or crop the image to make the text clearer, run OCR again, and manually correct the result.
- Live Text does not respond: Confirm that you have an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 15 or later. Try a clearer image and press directly on a printed word.
- OneNote has no “Copy Text from Picture” option: Use the Windows or Mac desktop app; the web version does not provide this command directly.
- A scanned PDF will not let you select words: Run OCR in OneDrive mobile or Acrobat first. A scan can look like a document while containing only page images.
- OCR struggles with handwriting, tables, or unusual layout: Check the output against the page and consider whether you need plain text or a faithful, editable layout. The methods described here do not promise exact layout preservation.

Which method should you use?
For image files in a browser, start with Google Drive and Google Docs. For quick selection on a compatible iPhone or iPad, use Live Text. OneNote desktop is useful if you already work there, while OneDrive mobile and Acrobat provide OCR options for scanned PDFs. Whatever you choose, make the source legible, protect sensitive content, and verify the copied text against the original.

Can I copy text from a screenshot?
Yes. Use Google Drive and Google Docs, OneNote desktop, or Live Text on a supported iPhone or iPad. OCR turns the text visible in the screenshot into selectable text.
Does OCR preserve the original formatting?
Not necessarily. Google Docs conversion may change formatting, and OCR output should be checked against the source image.
