What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To enforce a forbidden-word list in WordPress post titles, use a plugin that validates titles when a post is saved or published. A title-specific option can block publication or warn the author; broader filters can scan the title, content and excerpt and save a match as a draft. WordPress’s built-in Discussion blocklist is for comments, not post titles.
Choose the rule before you install anything
Define two decisions first: what text to scan and what should happen when a match is found.
- Coverage: titles only, or title, body and excerpt.
- Consequence: prevent publication, warn the author, send the post back to draft, or require a checklist item to pass.
- Publishing routes: check whether the rule covers the block editor, Classic Editor, scheduled posts, REST API saves and any custom post types you use.
Plugin descriptions differ on these points, so confirm the current listing and compatibility with your WordPress version and editor before activating a rule.
Plugin options for forbidden title words
| Option | Scope described by its listing | What happens on a match | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duplicate Title Validator | Post titles | Can block publishing or show a warning. Its version 1.9 notes report server-side checks for REST saves. | A title-only policy with a configurable response |
| Spam Word Blocker | Title, content and excerpt; the listing describes all post types | Flagged posts are saved as drafts. It describes case-insensitive, word-boundary matching and one phrase per line. | A publishing filter that must cover the whole post |
| PublishPress Checklists Pro | Pre-publish checklist, including a prohibited-words feature | Publication depends on checklist validation. | An editorial team already using required pre-publish checks |
| WordPress Discussion moderation/blocklist | Comments | Comments can be held for moderation or marked as spam, depending on the setting. | Comment filtering only, not title enforcement |
Set up a title-specific block or warning
Duplicate Title Validator is the closest match when the requirement is specifically “these words must not appear in post titles.” Its WordPress.org listing says you can define words or phrases that must not appear in post titles and choose whether to block or warn.

- Install the current Duplicate Title Validator release from the WordPress.org Plugin Directory.
- Open its settings and add each prohibited word or phrase to the plugin’s forbidden-words list.
- Choose the response: stop the save or publication, or display a warning that allows the author to continue.
- Test a title containing an exact term, a phrase, different capitalization and a near-match. Record whether the result is a hard block or only an admin notice.
- Test the routes your site actually uses, including the block editor, Classic Editor, scheduled publication and REST-based editing. The listing’s REST enforcement note is tied to its version 1.9 notes; verify behavior in the current release.
This approach is appropriate when legitimate terms in the body or excerpt should remain unaffected.
Scan the whole post and send matches to draft
Use Spam Word Blocker when the policy applies beyond the title. Its listing says it scans the title, content and excerpt at publish time and saves a flagged post as a draft.

Do not use the Discussion blocklist for titles
WordPress’s Settings > Discussion moderation and blocklist fields filter comments. The documentation describes matching text in comments, including matches that can occur inside words; it does not describe those fields as a post-title validator. Adding title terms there will not enforce a title policy.

Testing and maintenance checklist
- Test exact words, multi-word phrases, capitalization, punctuation and words embedded in longer terms.
- Test new posts and edits to existing posts.
- Test drafts, scheduled posts and REST/API saves if those workflows are enabled.
- Test every custom post type that should be covered; a plugin limited to standard posts may not enforce your policy elsewhere.
- Check the plugin’s maintenance status, WordPress-version compatibility and editor compatibility before rollout.
- Keep an exception process for legitimate names, quotations or technical terms that contain a blocked string.
When custom code is justified
Custom code can make sense when the rule must integrate with a bespoke editorial system, but a display-time title filter is not the same as save-time enforcement. The available source material does not establish one universal hook recipe that reliably covers the block editor, Classic Editor, REST clients and custom post types. If you build a validator, verify current WordPress developer documentation and test every publishing path your site exposes before treating it as a security or compliance control.
