n8n does not render HTML by itself. Use it as the orchestrator: send a URL or inline HTML/CSS from an n8n workflow to a browser-based screenshot service, receive the PNG, JPEG or WebP response as binary data, and pass that file to storage, email, a CMS or another workflow step.

This guide shows the documented Browserless HTTP Request method, an inline HTML example for generated graphics, practical options, security considerations, troubleshooting, and an alternative using ScreenshotNeo.

What you need before building the workflow

  • An n8n Cloud or self-hosted instance.
  • A rendering service that exposes an HTTP screenshot endpoint. Browserless documents a POST /screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL or inline HTML and returns image data.
  • An API token for the rendering service.
  • A downstream destination, such as object storage, email, a database, a CMS or an HTTP upload endpoint.

n8n connects applications and APIs; it is not a browser renderer. The browser work happens in the screenshot service, while n8n handles triggers, data preparation, authentication, branching and delivery.

Build a URL-to-image workflow in n8n

1. Add a trigger

Create a new workflow and add Manual Trigger while developing. Replace it with a Schedule Trigger, Webhook or app trigger when the workflow is ready for regular use.

2. Add the HTTP Request node

  1. Add an HTTP Request node after the trigger.
  2. Set the method to POST.
  3. Set the URL to your Browserless screenshot endpoint, including its documented /screenshot path.
  4. Store the Browserless token in n8n Credentials and reference it as the endpoint’s query parameter, rather than typing a secret into the request body.
  5. Set the request body to JSON and include the page URL and screenshot options.
  6. Set the response format to File (binary) so the returned image can be used by file-oriented nodes.

A representative request body is:

{
  "url": "https://example.com/report",
  "options": {
    "fullPage": true,
    "type": "png"
  }
}

Use the exact field names and authentication controls shown in the current Browserless documentation and n8n node version. The documented options include full-page capture and image type. Browserless returns PNG, JPEG or WebP image data.

3. Test the binary result

Execute the workflow and inspect the HTTP Request node’s output. A successful response should appear as binary data rather than a JSON error object. Rename the binary property if your next node expects a specific name such as data or image.

4. Store or distribute the image

Connect a storage, email, CMS or HTTP upload node. The destination is a workflow design choice: n8n can route the binary output wherever your process requires. Add a filename with an extension matching the selected type and preserve the MIME type when your destination supports it.

Turn inline HTML and CSS into a graphic

For cards, certificates, invoices or social graphics, send the markup itself instead of a public URL. Browserless documents an html request field. When you use html, do not also send url in the same request.

{
  "html": "<!doctype html><html><head><meta charset="utf-8"><style>html,body{margin:0} .card{width:1200px;height:630px;padding:64px;box-sizing:border-box;background:#111827;color:white;font:48px Arial,sans-serif}</style></head><body><div class="card">Quarterly update</div></body></html>",
  "options": {
    "type": "webp",
    "fullPage": true
  }
}

In n8n, build this JSON with an Edit Fields (Set) node or an expression that inserts values from the trigger. Keep the HTML complete: include your CSS, a defined viewport-sized layout and any text that must appear in the final image.

External assets and fonts

Inline rendering does not guarantee that every external stylesheet, font, image or script will load. A remote asset can be blocked by authentication, network policy, DNS, CORS behavior, a slow response or a deployment that has no access to the public internet. For repeatable output, inline critical CSS, use reachable asset URLs, wait for dynamic content when the service supports it, and inspect the actual image from your deployment.

Viewport and full-page behavior

Set dimensions that match the design you are producing. A responsive page can render differently at a service’s default viewport than it does on your laptop. Use full-page capture for documents and long pages; use a fixed viewport and a bounded element for social cards or thumbnails. Check whether lazy-loaded images appear before accepting the file.

Useful screenshot controls

The exact option names depend on the rendering service and its current API. Browserless documents Puppeteer-style screenshot options, including:

  • Image type: choose PNG, JPEG or WebP according to transparency, quality and file-size needs.
  • Full-page capture: include the complete scrollable document instead of only the viewport.
  • URL versus HTML: send one or the other; do not combine the html field with url in a single Browserless request.

For more advanced workflows, put rendering parameters in the trigger data and map them into the HTTP Request node. Validate allowed values before sending user-provided options, and keep the request body deterministic when you need reproducible files.

Keep credentials and rendered content safe

Protect the token

Use n8n Credentials for the rendering token. Hard-coding it in a workflow body, an expression, a shared URL or a log makes accidental exposure more likely when workflows are exported or debug output is shared.

Treat HTML as potentially active input

HTML can contain scripts and remote resource references. The available documentation does not establish a security review for arbitrary untrusted HTML. If users can submit markup, define an allowlist, remove or reject scripts where appropriate, restrict outbound network access, and consult the rendering vendor’s current security documentation before setting production policies.

Limit data leakage

Do not place secrets in query strings or visible markup. Be careful when screenshots contain personal data, private dashboards or temporary tokens. Set retention and access controls in the destination where n8n stores the resulting binary.

Browserless HTTP Request versus a dedicated HTML/CSS node

Two documented implementation styles fit different workflows. Browserless is a hosted HTTP endpoint; the HTML/CSS to Image project describes an n8n community node and API for images, website screenshots, PDFs and render-on-demand URLs, with CSS overrides and binary output options.

Criterion Browserless through HTTP Request HTML/CSS to Image integration
Input URL or inline HTML in a POST request HTML/CSS rendering through its API or community node
n8n setup Manual Trigger plus HTTP Request; token in n8n Credentials Install and configure the community node or call its API
Output PNG, JPEG or WebP image data README describes image and PDF rendering plus binary output
Controls Documented screenshot options such as full-page capture and image type README describes CSS overrides and render-on-demand options
Cost, latency and reliability Not established by the cited documentation Not established by the cited README
Best fit A workflow that already uses generic HTTP calls and needs URL or HTML capture A team that prefers a purpose-built node and file-oriented output

Confirm current node compatibility, configuration, pricing and service limits before standardizing on the community integration. Neither source establishes a fair benchmark between the two approaches.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a direct screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts HTML/CSS-to-image requests through the same API, so n8n can call it with one HTTP request instead of managing browser setup. It is the first option to try when you want clean shots: it accepts cookie banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for the current parameters. The following calls use a URL; for inline HTML, send the HTML according to the documented request parameter.

Troubleshoot common failures

The node returns JSON instead of an image

Set the HTTP Request response format to File or Binary. If the service returned an error, inspect the status code and body before passing the item to a storage node.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screenshot is blank

Check the URL, DNS access and authentication. For inline HTML, verify that the html field is present and that you did not also send url. Confirm that required assets are reachable from the rendering service and add a documented wait strategy for content created after initial page load.

Dynamic content is missing

Wait for a reliable selector or page state rather than relying on a short arbitrary delay. Make sure the selector exists in the rendered DOM and that the page’s API calls can complete from the service environment.

Fonts or images differ from local development

Use a font that the renderer can access, inline critical styles, verify asset URLs and set the viewport explicitly. Compare the final binary produced in n8n with the browser preview at the same dimensions.

The full-page image is unexpectedly large

Use a bounded viewport or element capture for cards. For documents, choose JPEG or WebP when transparency is unnecessary, and resize after capture if your output channel has a maximum dimension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The token appears in logs or exports

Move it into n8n Credentials, remove debug data containing the query string, rotate the exposed token and review workflow sharing permissions.

A community node will not install or run

Check its current compatibility with your n8n version and deployment mode. If support is uncertain, use the generic HTTP Request node against the provider’s API instead.

Production checklist

  • Use a credential store for every rendering token.
  • Validate URLs and HTML before submitting them.
  • Choose a fixed viewport, image type and filename policy.
  • Test external fonts, images, scripts, lazy loading and authenticated pages in the actual deployment.
  • Handle non-2xx responses and verify that the response is really an image before storing it.
  • Record request identifiers and rendering errors without logging secrets or private page content.
  • Set sensible workflow timeouts and retries, but avoid duplicate downstream writes when a retry succeeds after a delayed response.
  • Review the rendering vendor’s current limits, security documentation and terms before processing untrusted or high-volume input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can n8n convert HTML to an image without an external renderer?

No. n8n orchestrates the request; a browser-based rendering service must turn the HTML and CSS into pixels.

Should I send a URL or inline HTML?

Send a URL for an existing page. Send inline HTML for generated designs, and do not include both fields in one Browserless screenshot request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which output format should I choose?

Use PNG when lossless detail or transparency matters, JPEG for photographic content without transparency, and WebP when your consumers support it and a smaller file is useful.
