You can sell thrifted clothing and other one-of-a-kind used goods through a WordPress site by using WooCommerce for product listings, inventory, cart and checkout. Before opening, set up hosting and HTTPS, create accurate listings, configure a payment method and shipping rules that work where you sell, and test a complete order. Live auctions are a separate option with a different order and payment workflow.
Decide what you’ll sell and how orders will work
Most thrift inventory is unique: once an item sells, there may be no identical replacement. Plan your listings and stock controls around that reality. For each piece, photograph the actual item and record its condition, measurements, and any flaws. Those details help shoppers judge fit and wear before they buy; they are practical listing guidance, not a WooCommerce requirement.
For conventional online sales, WooCommerce provides a catalog and checkout workflow for physical goods. Its official WordPress.org listing describes it as “the open-source ecommerce platform for WordPress.” See the WooCommerce listing.
Choose the auction route only if you specifically want bidders competing in a live session. The reviewed Thrifting plugin has a separate order and payment process rather than syncing auctions into WooCommerce; details are below.

Set up WordPress hosting and HTTPS
Start with a WordPress site on hosting that meets WooCommerce’s requirements. The WordPress.org listing currently specifies PHP 7.4 or higher (recommends PHP 8.0 or higher), MySQL 5.5.5 or higher or MariaDB 10.1 or higher, and WordPress 7.0 or higher. It recommends 256 MB of memory and HTTPS. Requirements can change, so check the listing before choosing or changing a host: WooCommerce on WordPress.org.
Use HTTPS on the storefront, particularly on pages where customers enter account or payment details. Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins maintained, and make a backup before updates so you have a recovery point if an update causes a problem.
Install WooCommerce and configure the store
- In WordPress admin, open Plugins → Add New, search for WooCommerce, then install and activate it.
- Follow the WooCommerce setup flow. Enter the store’s location and currency, and select the product industry settings that fit your business.
- Review the store settings for the way you will sell and fulfill orders. WooCommerce’s beginner activity covers store setup and product creation: WooCommerce Getting Started.
Currency, payment availability, shipping coverage, and legal obligations depend on where your store operates and where customers are located. Treat these as choices to configure for your business, not defaults that are automatically right for every seller.

Create a clear listing for each one-off item
In the WordPress dashboard, open Products → Add New to create a product. Give it a specific title and describe its condition in plain language. Include garment measurements where useful, note visible flaws, and use photographs of the item being sold rather than a generic substitute.
- Price: Enter the amount you intend to charge.
- Inventory: Enable stock management and set the quantity to what is actually available. For a unique item, that is usually one. Keeping the count accurate reduces the chance of accepting orders for something already sold.
- Images: Add clear product photos and write descriptive alt text that communicates what each image shows.
- Description: Explain material or other known details, condition, measurements, and any limitations a buyer should know before ordering.
WooCommerce supports physical products and product variations, but a one-off vintage piece may be simplest as an individual listing rather than a size or color variation. Choose and connect a payment method
Select a payment gateway that is available for your business location and supports your account and payout needs. WooCommerce lists WooPayments availability in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Spain, France, Germany, and Italy. Its ecosystem includes more than 100 gateways, including Stripe, PayPal, and Square. Those listings do not guarantee that a particular seller is eligible: confirm each provider’s current country coverage, onboarding requirements, account terms, and fees before relying on it. Installing WooCommerce alone does not make live payments ready. Complete the payment provider’s account setup, connect it to the store, and check its test or safe transaction options before accepting customer orders.
Set shipping rules and check tax duties locally
Build shipping rates around the packages you actually send, the carriers you use, and the destinations you are prepared to serve. Decide which destinations are in scope and what customers will pay before enabling checkout. A parcel shipping scale can help if you charge based on parcel weight, but it is an optional tool, not a store requirement.

WooCommerce says its shipping feature for the United States can print USPS labels and schedule pickups, and that the platform can connect to carriers such as UPS and FedEx. Tax extensions can automate calculations, but they do not establish whether you must register, collect tax, or file returns. Check the tax authority for your location and the destinations where you sell, or consult a qualified local adviser. Business registration, permits, consumer protections, privacy requirements, and rules affecting secondhand goods can also vary by jurisdiction; verify applicable obligations with local authoritative sources before selling.

Place a test order from the shopper’s point of view, then verify the resulting order in WordPress. WooCommerce’s beginner activity includes a customer-side cart and checkout and checking the order in the backend. Use payment test mode where available, or another safe method recommended by your payment provider.
- Open the shop page and confirm products and prices display correctly.
- Open a product page and check its photos, description, stock, and purchase controls.
- Add the item to the cart and proceed to checkout with a shipping address in a destination you serve.
- Check that the expected shipping option and total appear, then complete a test payment if your provider supports it.
- Confirm the order appears in the WordPress order dashboard and that inventory decreases as expected.
- Check the order confirmation email. Transactional email or some live integrations may require additional setup.
Resolve any mismatch in pricing, stock, shipping, payment, or confirmation before directing customers to the store.

Use live auctions only if the separate workflow fits
The WordPress.org Thrifting plugin embeds a bidding console for live auctions, but it does not create or synchronize WooCommerce orders. Auction orders and payment handling take place separately in Mission Control. Paid auctions require Stripe Connect onboarding there, and sellers set their shipping rules themselves. This makes auctions a distinct operating choice, not an add-on that automatically feeds into the WooCommerce catalog checkout. Confirm current service limits and terms before building your selling process around Mission Control, and account for the separate shipping and payment steps when planning order handling.
