“Thumbnail” can mean either an image inside a webpage or the preview Safari displays for an open tab. Those are different symptoms. For page images, the likely fault is the connection, Safari settings or extensions, or the site’s image delivery. For tab previews, there is no Apple-published single cause or guaranteed fix. Start by identifying which thumbnail is missing, then test the problem across websites, networks and privacy settings.
First, identify the missing thumbnail
Images inside a webpage
This includes article cards, product photos, video previews and other images rendered in the page. If text and layout load but image boxes are empty, the request may be blocked, delayed, or failing at the website’s image server.
Safari tab previews
These are the small snapshots Safari shows in the tab overview. Apple’s available guidance does not establish one definitive cause for missing tab previews, so treat this as a Safari-state or rendering symptom rather than proof of a defective iPad model.
Measure the scope
- Does it happen on one website or nearly every website?
- Does the same page work on another device?
- Does it work on another Wi‑Fi network or cellular data?
- Are thumbnails absent only with a VPN, Private Relay or content blocker enabled?
An issue limited to one site points toward that site or its interaction with Safari. A failure across many sites makes network, Safari configuration or an extension more likely.

Work through Apple’s checks in this order
1. Try another network
Open the same URL on a different Wi‑Fi network, or on cellular data if your iPad supports it. A captive portal, DNS filter, school or company firewall can allow the page shell while blocking image hosts. Apple also notes that a VPN can cause some apps or websites to block content. Temporarily disconnect the VPN, reload the page, and reconnect it afterward if the result is unchanged.
2. Restart the iPad
Restarting clears transient network and Safari state. After the iPad starts, open a fresh Safari tab and test the URL rather than relying on a previously cached tab.
3. Verify JavaScript
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps (or scroll to Safari on older iPadOS versions).
- Tap Safari, then Advanced.
- Make sure JavaScript is enabled.
Many modern thumbnail components are inserted only after JavaScript runs. Enabling it is a diagnostic step, not evidence that JavaScript was definitely the cause.
4. Clear Safari website data
- Go to Settings → Apps → Safari (or Settings → Safari).
- Choose Clear History and Website Data, or use Advanced → Website Data to remove data for a specific site.
- Reopen Safari and test again.
Clearing data can sign you out, remove site preferences and discard locally stored carts or drafts. Record anything important first. If the problem is only one domain, deleting that domain’s data is less disruptive than clearing everything.

5. Test content blockers
Apple describes content blockers as able to block loads and hide page elements. In Safari, tap the aA menu in the address bar and review Manage Extensions, or disable the relevant blocker for the affected site. Reload once with the blocker disabled. If thumbnails return, re-enable the blocker and add a site-specific exception or adjust its filter; if nothing changes, restore the original setting.
6. Check Private Relay for a one-site failure
When only a particular website or page fails, Apple advises checking Private Relay. A temporary test can isolate an IP-based or network-routing incompatibility:
- Open Settings and tap your Apple Account.
- Tap iCloud → Private Relay.
- Temporarily turn it off, revisit the page, then turn it back on if there is no change.
Private Relay is not inherently broken, and turning it off is not a universal fix. The comparison is useful only when the failure is site-specific.
When the website is the problem
If one domain still omits images while other sites work, the site owner needs to inspect its delivery path. Apple’s Safari guidance says Safari can choose an image variant based on screen pixel density and recommends reducing unnecessary image requests and transfers. That does not identify a particular broken format, lazy-loading library or server error, so avoid assuming the iPad hardware is at fault.

What a developer should inspect
- Open Safari Web Inspector or Safari Developer Tools and watch the Network panel while reloading.
- Check the exact thumbnail URL: status code, redirects, MIME type, TLS certificate and response size.
- Confirm that the image host permits the affected origin and does not reject Safari’s request headers.
- Test lazy loading by scrolling the thumbnail into view and by disabling JavaScript in a controlled test.
- Compare the selected source for standard and high-density displays; an invalid
srcsetcandidate can leave a placeholder. - Check whether a CDN, hotlink rule, bot filter or signed URL has expired.
Apple’s developer documentation points site teams to Web Inspector and Safari Developer Tools for this kind of inspection. A successful response in a desktop browser does not prove that the iPad receives the same URL, headers or image variant.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Every site is missing thumbnails
- Test another network and disconnect the VPN.
- Restart the iPad.
- Verify JavaScript and temporarily disable content blockers.
- Clear Safari data if the failure survives those tests.
Only one site is affected
- Compare Wi‑Fi with cellular data or another Wi‑Fi network.
- Test Private Relay off for that site.
- Remove only that site’s Safari data.
- Report the URL, iPadOS version, Safari version, network type and a screenshot to the site developer.
Images appear after a long delay
Leave the page open while watching whether placeholders change. A slow or blocked image host, lazy-loading trigger or oversized transfer is more likely than a missing Safari setting. Developers should measure the image requests in Web Inspector rather than repeatedly clearing the iPad.
Tab previews are blank but page images work
Close the affected tabs, restart the iPad and test a newly opened tab. If ordinary page images load but tab snapshots remain absent, Apple’s published troubleshooting material does not provide a confirmed single cause. Keep iPadOS current, document whether the behavior is persistent or intermittent, and use Apple Support if it affects normal browsing.

- Changing networks is a diagnostic comparison; it does not prove that Wi‑Fi, cellular service or Private Relay caused the failure.
- Clearing website data changes stored login and preference state, so use a site-specific deletion where possible.
- Do not leave a VPN, blocker or Private Relay disabled permanently solely because one test changed the result; restore your privacy controls and contact the site owner.
- No reliable statistic establishes how often iPad thumbnail failures occur, and an anecdotal report involving one iPad model does not demonstrate a model-wide defect.
When to contact the site or Apple
Contact the website developer when one site remains broken after network, Safari, extension and Private Relay comparisons. Include the failing URL, whether another network works, your iPad model and iPadOS version, and any console or network error you can capture. Apple’s guidance says that if Safari still does not load websites after its troubleshooting steps, you should contact the website developer for more help. Contact Apple when the behavior spans many unrelated sites and persists after those checks, especially if other Safari functions also fail.

Could an older iPad model be the reason thumbnails do not appear?
An anecdotal report about an iPad Pro M1 and iPad Air 2 is not evidence of a model-specific fault. Compare networks, Safari settings and websites before attributing the symptom to hardware.

Will reinstalling Safari fix missing thumbnails?
Safari is integrated into iPadOS, and the documented first steps are network, VPN, restart, website-data, JavaScript, Private Relay and content-blocker checks. Reinstalling is not established as a fix.
Should I permanently disable Private Relay or my content blocker?
No. Temporarily changing one control can isolate a site-specific problem; restore it if the test does not help and use a site exception only when appropriate.
The Bottom Line
Separate in-page images from Safari tab previews, then compare sites and networks before changing settings. Check VPN, JavaScript, website data, content blockers and Private Relay in sequence. If one website remains affected, its image delivery or Safari compatibility needs developer investigation; a broad failure after these checks belongs with Apple Support.
