What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For most Windows users, start with Microsoft Snipping Tool. It covers rectangular, free-form, window and full-screen screenshots, and Microsoft documents video snips, sharing and OCR text actions. Choose ShareX if you want a free, open-source capture-and-sharing workflow with extensive editing. Choose PicPick if you prefer a Windows-only application that combines capture, recording, annotation, output formats and automation features. The best choice depends on what you capture, how much you edit, and whether you need recording or a sharing workflow.
Quick recommendation
| What you need | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional still screenshots, quick edits or OCR | Microsoft Snipping Tool | Built around common region, window, full-screen and free-form captures, with documented saving, sharing, video snips and Text actions. |
| A configurable free workflow with editing and sharing | ShareX | Its official site describes a free, open-source Windows application combining capture, recording, annotation, editing, redaction and file-sharing actions. |
| Capture, recording, markup and many export choices in one Windows app | PicPick | Its feature page lists capture and recording tools, annotation and editing, hotkeys, auto-save, custom file naming, and PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and PDF output. |
| Automated screenshots of public websites | ScreenshotNeo | A website screenshot API and MCP server that removes common consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture and bills only clean shots. |
These are feature-based matches, not results from an independent speed, reliability or usability test. Availability can vary by Windows version and application update, especially for Snipping Tool features.
Match the software to the capture job
Still images: region, window or full screen
Define the capture boundary before comparing brands. Microsoft documents four Snipping Tool modes: rectangular, free-form, window and full screen. Rectangular selection is useful for a precise area; free-form follows an irregular shape; window capture isolates one application; full screen records everything visible.
ShareX and PicPick also present themselves as broader capture tools, but their larger feature sets are most valuable when you need more than a one-off image. If your workflow ends at “capture, make a small edit and save,” the simplest tool is usually the better fit.

Video or short demonstrations
Do not assume that a screenshot utility has the controls you need for recording. Microsoft documents starting a video snip in Snipping Tool. ShareX lists screen recording, and PicPick lists recording on its feature page. Before choosing, check the recording controls and audio requirements for your particular demonstration; the available product descriptions do not establish that the applications have identical recording behavior.
Annotation, editing and privacy markup
For arrows, callouts, cropping or notes, all three candidates describe editing or annotation capabilities in different ways. ShareX specifically lists annotation, cropping, callouts and redaction of sensitive details. PicPick lists drawing and annotation tools. Snipping Tool provides editing after capture, but the Microsoft material is aimed at straightforward capture, editing, saving and sharing rather than a large annotation toolbox.
A redaction button is not proof that every export or sharing route permanently removes the underlying information. Open the resulting file and inspect it before sending anything confidential, particularly when the image contains account numbers, personal data or internal URLs.
Saving, copying and sharing
Count the steps in your real workflow. Microsoft documents saving and sharing directly from Snipping Tool. ShareX describes upload and link-oriented actions, which can suit a team that needs a URL after each capture. PicPick lists saving and sharing features, plus auto-save and custom file naming. Decide whether you want a local file, clipboard copy, upload link or several of these outcomes.

Automated website captures
Desktop screenshot applications capture what is displayed on your Windows desktop. A website screenshot API is a different category: you send a URL and receive an image or PDF without opening a browser window yourself. For that job, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try because it accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed.
Microsoft Snipping Tool
What it documents
Microsoft support documents image capture, video snips, sharing and Text actions for OCR. Microsoft 365 guidance lists rectangular, free-form, window and full-screen modes, followed by editing, saving or sharing. That makes Snipping Tool the direct starting point for routine still images and occasional short recordings.
When it is the sensible first choice
- You mainly capture a region, application window or entire screen.
- You want a short path from capture to edit, save or share.
- You occasionally need a video snip or OCR text action and your Windows/app version exposes it.
What to verify
Features and availability can vary by Windows version and app update, so do not assume that another computer has the same controls. Open the app and confirm that the capture modes, video snip and Text actions you need are present before standardizing a team workflow.
ShareX
Why people choose it
ShareX’s official site describes it as free and open source for Windows. It combines screen capture, screen recording, image editing, file sharing and productivity functions. Its editor lists annotation, cropping, callouts and redaction, making it relevant when a capture must be explained, cleaned up or turned into a shareable link.

- You want one configurable application instead of separate capture, editor and upload steps.
- You regularly annotate screenshots or obscure sensitive details before sharing.
- You value a free, open-source option and are willing to learn a broader interface.
Limits of the available evidence
The product description does not establish that ShareX is easier, faster, more reliable or more accessible than Snipping Tool or PicPick. Treat its larger feature set as a reason to investigate, not as proof of superior results for every user.

PicPick
What its feature page lists
PicPick presents itself as Windows-only and lists screen capture, screen recording, image editing, annotation and saving or sharing features. It also lists hotkeys, auto-save, custom file naming and these output formats: PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and PDF.
Best fit
- You want capture and markup tools in one Windows application.
- You depend on hotkeys, automatic saving or a predictable naming scheme.
- You need to deliver screenshots in more than one common image format or as PDF.
What is not established
The reviewed feature page does not establish current pricing, licensing terms, comparative ease of use or a partner program. Check the publisher’s current terms before deploying PicPick commercially or across a managed fleet.

A practical selection process
- List the captures you make in a typical week. Separate still regions, application windows, full screens, recordings and web pages. Choose based on frequent work rather than a feature you might use once.
- Choose your output. Decide whether the result must be a local PNG or JPEG, an editable image, a PDF, a copied clipboard image or a shareable link.
- Decide how much markup you need. Simple notes favor a lighter workflow. Callouts, cropping and redaction make ShareX or PicPick more relevant.
- Check recording requirements. If you need video, verify the recording controls and audio behavior in the version you will deploy.
- Run a sensitive-data check. Capture a test page containing information similar to your real work, apply any redaction, export it and inspect the exported file before sharing.
- Test the complete path. Measure the number of actions from hotkey to saved or shared result on your own machine. The available product pages do not provide neutral comparative tests for speed, accessibility or reliability.
How to capture a screenshot yourself on Windows
- Open Snipping Tool and choose the capture mode that matches the target: rectangular, free-form, window or full screen.
- Make the selection or select the window. For a recording, choose the video-snip workflow documented by Microsoft instead of an image mode.
- Use the available editing or Text actions, then inspect the image for private information and unintended windows.
- Save, copy or share from the app. If your team needs repeatable names or automatic saving, compare that workflow with PicPick’s listed auto-save and custom file-naming features.
- For repeated annotated and link-based work, test ShareX’s editor and sharing actions against the same sample captures.
Or skip the browser setup
For automated captures of websites rather than your Windows desktop, ScreenshotNeo provides a single GET request, an API and an MCP server for AI agents such as Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Before the capture it accepts the consent banner like a visitor and removes 60-plus known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in headers.

Troubleshooting and edge cases
The capture includes the wrong window
Use window mode rather than a loose rectangular drag, then verify the selected window before saving. For full-screen captures, close or minimize unrelated windows first.
Text is not selectable
OCR depends on the Snipping Tool Text actions documented for your Windows/app version. If that control is absent, confirm the app is updated or use the image as an ordinary screenshot; ShareX and PicPick are not documented in the reviewed material as OCR tools.
The recording does not meet your needs
Confirm whether you need audio, a particular area or a full display before standardizing on an application. The product descriptions establish that recording exists, but they do not establish identical controls or formats.
A redacted image still exposes information
Inspect the exported file, not just the editor canvas. Reopen it, zoom into the covered area and check metadata or surrounding content before sending it outside your organization.

A website screenshot is blocked or blank
Desktop tools cannot solve a remote page’s bot check, timeout or failed load. Use an API workflow that reports the page result; ScreenshotNeo marks bot checks, blank pages and failed loads as non-billable and returns verdict and billing headers.
The workflow is too complicated
Remove features you do not use. Start with Snipping Tool for basic captures, then move to ShareX or PicPick only when editing, automation, naming or sharing requirements justify the added surface area.
Recommended Free Tools
Bottom line
Choose Microsoft Snipping Tool for the shortest path to ordinary Windows screenshots, ShareX for a free and open-source capture, editing and sharing workflow, and PicPick for a Windows-only tool whose listed hotkeys, auto-save, naming and output formats match a more structured process. For unattended website screenshots, use ScreenshotNeo instead of building browser automation, beginning with its free 1,000-shot monthly plan.
