This guide explains every built-in capture mode, where the controls are, what changes between Windows 10 and Windows 11, why long webpages are different, and how to troubleshoot missing or incomplete captures.
The quickest Windows screenshot shortcuts

After using a shortcut, paste a clipboard capture into an image editor, document, chat, or email. A Snipping Tool capture can instead be saved, printed, copied, or shared from its preview.
Open and configure Snipping Tool
- Open Start and search for Snipping Tool, or press Windows + Shift + S for an immediate image snip.
- For an image, choose the snip mode from the overlay or app toolbar. For video, select Record, then New.
- Before selecting the area, open the Delay control when you need time to reveal a menu or arrange a temporary interface. The countdown can be set to 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds.
- Drag over the target, select a window, or choose the full display. The result opens in Snipping Tool for editing and export.
Choose the right image mode

On a multi-display setup, verify the highlighted selection before releasing the mouse. The full-screen option captures the display area offered by the current Snipping Tool build; use a rectangular or window snip when you need a precise application boundary.

Edit, mark up, save, and share a screenshot
In the Snipping Tool preview, use Pen or Highlighter to draw attention to details. You can add shapes or emojis, erase annotations, crop the image, and undo or redo changes. When the image is ready, use the available controls to copy it, save it, print it, or share it.
Use the preview rather than the initial overlay when you need a persistent file. The PrtSc shortcut is intentionally clipboard-first, so nothing needs to appear on screen after the key press until you paste the image somewhere.
Copy text from a screenshot with Text actions
- Take an image snip and open its preview.
- Select Text actions. Snipping Tool runs optical character recognition on the captured image.
- Copy the recognized text, or use the quick-redact options for detected email addresses and phone numbers when those controls are offered.
Microsoft states that all text-recognition processing is performed locally on the device. OCR quality still depends on legible text, contrast, scale, and the language support in the installed Windows build. Review copied text before using it in a document or command.

Record your screen on Windows 11
Microsoft’s current Windows guide presents screen recording as a Windows 11 capability. Whether the controls appear depends on the installed Windows and Microsoft Store Snipping Tool versions, so a missing Record button is a version-availability issue to check rather than proof that the shortcut is wrong.
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Select Record, then select New. Windows + Shift + R opens the same video-capture overlay where supported.
- Drag around the screen area to record.
- Select Start, perform the actions you need, then select Stop.
- Save the recording as-is, or send it to Clipchamp if you need captions or added audio.
On supported versions, the microphone can be toggled for a voiceover. The available recording controls and audio behavior can change with Windows and app updates, so check the toolbar shown on the target PC before recording a presentation.
Windows 11 features with variable availability
Perfect screenshot
Perfect screenshot automatically tightens a rectangular selection around prominent on-screen content. Microsoft identifies it as a Windows 11 Copilot+ PC feature, not a universal Windows control. If it is absent, use Rectangle or Window mode instead.

Color picker
The color picker can identify a screen color and provide HEX, RGB, or HSL values. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog describes it as added for Windows 11 PCs, while the current Support page labels it for Windows 11 AI/Copilot+ PCs. Treat availability as dependent on the Windows build, device, and app update, and verify the controls on the machine you are documenting.
Can Snipping Tool capture a scrolling webpage?
No. Microsoft’s Windows learning guidance says Snipping Tool does not natively capture long, scrolling webpages. A full-screen or rectangular snip captures only what is currently visible. For a complete webpage, use a tool designed for full-page rendering or an API that loads the page and stitches its scrollable content; do not expect Windows + Shift + S to continue below the viewport.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
The shortcut does nothing
- Open Start and search for Snipping Tool to confirm the app is present.
- Use the app’s controls instead of the shortcut. This separates a keyboard or shortcut problem from an application problem.
- Install available Windows and Microsoft Store app updates; newer controls are delivered through those updates.
PrtSc appears to have captured nothing
PrtSc copies the image to the clipboard rather than necessarily opening a preview. Paste immediately into an image editor, document, or message. Use Windows + Shift + S when you want the selection overlay and preview.

The Record button is missing
Recording is documented as a Windows 11 capability and can depend on the installed Snipping Tool version. Update Windows and the Microsoft Store app, then reopen Snipping Tool. If the control still is not present, use an image snip or a separate recorder rather than assuming the shortcut will force video mode.
A menu closes before it is captured
Set Delay to 1–5 seconds, start the countdown, open the menu, and then make the selection. This is the intended workflow for transient menus and hover states.
OCR produces incorrect text
Retake the snip at a larger scale with stronger contrast, then inspect the copied result. OCR recognizes pixels, not the original document structure, so symbols, small type, and unusual fonts may need manual correction.

The capture is not a complete webpage
This is expected for Snipping Tool: it has no native scrolling-page mode. Capture the visible section for a quick reference, or switch to a full-page webpage capture service when the entire document is required.

- Local editing and OCR: annotations and Microsoft’s stated text-recognition processing occur on the Windows device.
- Clipboard versus file: PrtSc is fastest for immediate pasting; the Snipping Tool preview is better when you need a named, saved, printed, or shared image.

Does Windows 10 have every Snipping Tool feature shown here?
No. Core image snipping is covered by Microsoft’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 workflows, but recording and newer AI-assisted controls depend on the installed Windows/Snipping Tool version and, for some features, Copilot+ hardware.
What is the safest way to capture a temporary menu?
Use Snipping Tool’s Delay control, choose a one-to-five-second countdown, open the menu during the countdown, and then select the required capture area.
