When Selenium opens a new tab or window, switch WebDriver to that window and locate elements there only after the switch. A WebElement belongs to the document and browsing context where it was found; it is not a durable handle you can carry across navigation, refreshes, or DOM replacements. Wait for the new window, switch to it, wait for a page-specific condition, and then find the element again.
Why Selenium reports a stale element
Selenium describes an element as stale when it no longer appears in the DOM of the page. The usual causes are that the driver is no longer on the same page or the page refreshed; JavaScript removed and recreated the node; or the element belonged to an iframe whose context refreshed. A WebElement is a reference to a particular node in a particular document and browsing context. A locator, by contrast, is an instruction for finding a matching element now. Keep locators for later lookups; treat element objects as short-lived. After switching windows, navigating, refreshing, or seeing a framework replace a node, perform a fresh lookup in the active context.
Opening a new tab does not itself make every element in the original tab stale. The key issue is which window WebDriver currently controls. If you try to use an element reference after its document or context has changed—or try to use an element from one context while controlling another—the reference cannot safely identify the intended element.

Use this sequence for a new tab or window
Save the original window handle, wait for the new handle to appear, switch to it, wait for the page condition your test needs, and then locate the target element. Selenium’s window and tab guide uses this handle-based approach.
- Save the starting handle and handles. When the test expects a single browser context, check the starting count so an unexpected extra tab does not make the result ambiguous.
- Trigger the new page. Click the link or control that opens it.
- Wait for a new handle. Use an explicit wait for the handle count to increase, rather than assuming the page opened immediately.
- Identify and switch to the new handle. Select the handle that was not present before the click.
- Wait for page readiness. Use a title, URL, or application-specific element condition that represents the state your test actually needs.
- Find and use the element. Call
find_elementafter switching and after the readiness wait. Do not reuse an element object saved from the previous page.
Python example: open a new window and interact
This example assumes a link labelled “Open new window” opens one additional window and the destination title contains “Selenium.” Replace the link text, title fragment, selector, and timeout with values that match your application.

submit_button.click()The guard is useful when the test has a known starting state; omit or adapt it if your test deliberately begins with several windows. Likewise, if the application opens more than one new window, identify the intended destination by a reliable title or URL rather than arbitrarily selecting one.
Choose a wait for the state you need
Explicit waits are most useful when each one observes a concrete transition. A handle-count change establishes that a window opened; it does not establish that its content is ready. A title or URL can establish navigation; an element condition can establish that a particular control is available. Use the narrowest condition that matches the next action.

These expected conditions are documented in Selenium’s expected conditions guide. A fixed sleep only waits for elapsed time; it does not prove that the required browser state occurred. Prefer an explicit wait for the condition your next step depends on.
Handle an element replaced during a page update
Sometimes the browser stays in the same window while a framework replaces a row, button, or other node. If you know the old node should disappear, wait for that specific transition and then look up its replacement by locator.

)The new lookup matters: waiting for the old reference to become stale does not turn it into a reference to the replacement node. If the row may update in place instead of being removed, use a condition for the changed text, attribute, or state rather than expecting staleness.
Keep retries small and safe
A retry can help when the application legitimately re-renders between a lookup and an action. Re-run the lookup from a locator each time, bound the number of attempts, and retry only an operation that is safe to repeat. Do not repeatedly click the same stale WebElement; its reference will not repair itself. Avoid retrying non-idempotent actions such as submitting a payment or creating a record unless the application provides a way to establish whether the first attempt succeeded.

First diagnose why the element changed. A wait for the correct window, page state, or replacement element usually makes the test more reliable and more informative than a broad retry that can conceal a real failure.
Close the child page and return to the original
After work in the new tab is finished, close the current child window and switch explicitly to the saved original handle before interacting with the original page again.

driver.switch_to.window(original_window)Selenium warns that closing a window without switching to another leaves WebDriver pointed at a closed page, which can cause a NoSuchWindowException. If cleanup may run after a failure, check that the original handle is still present before switching, and report a clear test failure if it is not. Troubleshooting common failures
The new page opened, but Selenium still finds the old page
Cause: WebDriver has not switched to the new window handle. Fix: Save the original handle, wait for the new handle, compute the difference, and call driver.switch_to.window(new_handle) before looking up destination elements.

The window wait times out
Cause: The click did not open a separate window, the click missed its target, or the application opened a page in the current tab instead. Fix: Check the application’s actual behavior and the click outcome. If navigation is same-tab, wait for the expected URL, title, or page element instead of waiting for a new handle.
The handle count increased by more than one
Cause: More than one window opened, or an unexpected context already existed. Fix: Do not assume a single new handle. Identify the intended page using a reliable title or URL, and make the test’s starting-window assumptions explicit.
The handle changed but the element wait times out
Cause: The destination may still be loading, the readiness condition may not match the page, or the element may live inside an iframe. Fix: Check the active title or URL, verify the locator, and wait for the application state required by the test. If the element is in an iframe, switch to the correct frame before locating it; if that frame refreshes, switch to it again and re-find the element.
A click or lookup raises StaleElementReferenceException after an update
Cause: The page removed or replaced the node after Selenium found it. Fix: Wait for staleness only if the old node is expected to disappear, then perform a fresh lookup from the locator. If replacement is not expected, investigate why the page changed rather than masking it with retries.

Switching back raises NoSuchWindowException
Cause: The original window was closed, or the code attempted to act in a child window after closing it. Fix: Preserve the original handle, close only the intended child window, and switch back to the saved handle while it remains open.
