The location depends on how the image was created. A picture downloaded or saved through desktop Chrome normally appears in Chrome’s Downloads list and its configured download folder. A Chromebook’s built-in Screen Capture saves to Downloads unless you choose another folder. Android and iPhone or iPad saves go to the destination you selected. A Chrome Headless capture is written as screenshot.png in the command’s current working directory. Screenshots made with an operating system’s own shortcut are managed by that operating system, not by Chrome’s download setting.
Use the device and capture method below that match your case; this avoids searching the wrong folder.
First, identify how the screenshot was made
The word “screenshot” covers several different workflows. Use this quick map before opening folders:
| Capture method | First place to look | Why the location differs |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop Chrome download or saved webpage image | Chrome > More > Downloads, then Show in Folder | Chrome uses its download destination, which may be the default folder or a folder you selected. |
| Chromebook Screen Capture | Files app > Downloads | ChromeOS uses Downloads by default, or the folder selected in Screen Capture settings. |
| Android Chrome download | Chrome > More > Downloads, then the Files app | The visible storage path varies by device and the save action used. |
| iPhone or iPad Chrome save | Chrome > More > Downloads, Files, Drive, or Photos | You choose the destination when saving a file or image. |
Chrome Headless --screenshot |
The command’s current working directory | The documented output is screenshot.png in that directory. |
| Windows, macOS, Linux, or phone screenshot shortcut | The operating system’s screenshot, gallery, or file-management workflow | Chrome did not create or download the file, so Chrome’s Downloads setting does not control it. |

Find a recent Chrome download
- Open Chrome’s More menu (the three dots).
- Select Downloads.
- Find the image or saved file. Point to it and choose Show in Folder to open the containing folder in your file manager.
This is the fastest method because the Downloads page records the browser transaction even when you do not remember the folder name.

Check the default folder
If you never changed Chrome’s download location and did not choose a destination for this individual save, Google Chrome Help lists these defaults:
- Windows 10 and later:
Users<username>Downloads - macOS:
/Users/<username>/Downloads - Linux:
/home/<username>/Downloads
These are defaults, not guarantees. A different Chrome profile, a changed setting, or the “Save as” dialog can put the file elsewhere.
Inspect or change Chrome’s destination
- Open More > Settings.
- Select Downloads.
- Read the folder shown beside the download-location control.
- Turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading if you want to choose a folder for every future save, or use the change control to select a new default.
If the image is absent from both the Downloads page and the expected folder, confirm that you actually used Chrome’s save or download command. A screenshot made with the computer’s native shortcut follows the operating system’s own screenshot workflow instead.

Default location
Google Chromebook Help states that recordings and screenshots are saved to the Downloads folder. Open the Files app and select Downloads to see the captures.

- Open the Chromebook’s Screen Capture tool.
- Open its Settings.
- Choose Select folder.
- Open that selected folder in the Files app; new captures are sent there.
This setting applies to ChromeOS Screen Capture. It does not establish where an image downloaded from a webpage will go; downloaded files still follow Chrome’s download behavior.
Android phones and tablets
Chrome downloads and saved images
- Open Chrome and tap More > Downloads.
- If the address bar is at the bottom, swipe up on it first to reach the menu.
- Use the device’s Files app to locate the downloaded item on storage.
Android manufacturers organize storage differently, and Chrome’s help guidance does not promise one pathname that is correct for every device. Use the Downloads list to identify the file, then open it or reveal it through the Files app.

Native phone screenshots
If you pressed the phone’s screenshot controls rather than saving an image in Chrome, check the device’s photo or gallery app and its file-management tools. Chrome’s Downloads list will not necessarily contain that capture.
iPhone and iPad
Locate a Chrome download
- Open Chrome and tap More > Downloads.
- For an item saved with Save…, open the Files location you selected at the time.
- If you chose Google Drive, check the destination folder in Drive. Google’s November 2024 Chrome for iOS announcement documents a Drive folder named Saved from Chrome for Chrome downloads.
Images saved as photos
An image saved as an image can go to the device’s image library or Google Photos, depending on the option you selected. That is separate from a file saved into Files or Drive, so search the destination shown by the save action rather than assuming it is in Chrome’s Downloads list.

- Identify the shell, terminal, CI job, or script that launched Chrome.
- Print or inspect that process’s working directory.
- Look there for
screenshot.png, unless your command or wrapper renamed or moved it afterward.
This rule applies to the documented Headless command-line workflow; it is not a universal folder rule for normal Chrome windows.
A reliable “missing screenshot” checklist
- Name the device. Desktop, Chromebook, Android, iPhone or iPad, or a Headless environment.
- Name the creation method. Chrome download, ChromeOS Screen Capture, native operating-system shortcut, mobile save action, or Headless command.
- Open the matching index first. Use Chrome’s Downloads page for browser downloads, Files for ChromeOS, the mobile Files or Photos app for phone saves, or the process directory for Headless.
- Check destination choices. A changed desktop folder, ChromeOS selected folder, iOS Files or Drive destination, and per-download “Save as” choice all override an assumed default.
- Search by the recorded filename. Downloads lists and file managers can reveal the actual name even when you remember only that it was an image.
- Confirm it was not a native screenshot. If Chrome never downloaded or saved the image, use the operating system’s screenshot and photo-management tools.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing appears in the desktop Downloads folder | Chrome’s location was changed, or a one-time destination was chosen. | Open More > Settings > Downloads and use the Downloads page’s Show in Folder. |
| A Chromebook capture is not in Downloads | Screen Capture was configured to use another folder. | Open Screen Capture settings, check Select folder, and inspect that folder in Files. |
| Android Chrome shows the item but the folder is unclear | Storage layout differs by manufacturer or app. | Open Chrome > Downloads, then use the Files app to open the listed item. |
| An iPad or iPhone image is missing from Files | It was saved to Photos, Google Photos, Drive, or another selected destination. | Check the destination chosen during Save; inspect Photos or Drive as appropriate. |
| A Headless screenshot cannot be found | The command ran from a different working directory than expected. | Inspect the launcher’s current directory and look for screenshot.png. |
| A file is visible in Chrome’s list but will not open | The download may be incomplete, moved, or blocked by the file manager. | Use the entry’s folder action when available, then retry the save to a known folder. |

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Chrome sync screenshot files between computers?
The location steps above are local to the device and capture method. Use the Downloads list, Files app, Photos app, or Headless working directory on the device that created the image.
Can I make desktop Chrome ask for a folder every time?
Yes. Open More > Settings > Downloads and enable “Ask where to save each file before downloading.”
What filename does Chrome Headless use by default?
The documented –screenshot workflow writes screenshot.png in the command’s current working directory.
Why is a Chromebook screenshot not treated like a Chrome download?
ChromeOS Screen Capture has its own folder setting. It defaults to Downloads, but its selected folder is independent of Chrome’s webpage-download destination.
