To accept payments from European customers on a WordPress store, install a payment gateway extension such as Stripe, Mollie, WooPayments or PayPal Payments, connect an account that is available in your own country, then enable the payment methods and currencies your target buyers can use. Europe has no single checkout preference: the right setup depends on your business location, customer markets, currency, products and whether you charge recurring payments.
What you need before accepting a payment
A WordPress site does not process card or bank payments by itself. You normally need a commerce plugin—most commonly WooCommerce—a provider account and a gateway extension that connects checkout to that provider.
- Merchant country: the country where your business is established and can be verified. This controls whether Stripe, WooPayments, PayPal features or Mollie onboarding is available.
- Buyer countries: the European markets you expect to serve. Their preferred payment methods are not necessarily available to a merchant in every country.
- Store and settlement currencies: the currency shown at checkout and the currencies in which your provider can settle funds to you.
- Product model: one-time goods, digital products, memberships, subscriptions and regulated or restricted categories can have different method eligibility.
- Operational requirements: refunds, disputes, recurring billing, tax handling, mobile checkout and customer-data transfers.
Provider eligibility is distinct from buyer-country coverage. Confirm your own country first, before designing a checkout around a local method.
European payment methods you may need
Cards remain important, but European buyers often expect a local bank or wallet option. Depending on provider, currency, buyer location, product type and account approval, WooCommerce integrations can offer methods including:

| Method | Where it is commonly relevant | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bancontact | Belgium | Availability and display depend on the gateway and checkout conditions. |
| BLIK | Poland | Provider and buyer eligibility apply. |
| EPS | Austria | Not every extension supports every method shown in a provider dashboard. |
| iDEAL | Wero | Netherlands and supported markets | Check the provider’s current transition and eligibility rules. |
| Multibanco | Portugal | Currency, product and account settings can affect display. |
| Przelewy24 | Poland | Requires support from the chosen extension and provider account. |
| SEPA Direct Debit | SEPA-area customers | WooPayments documentation identifies this as closed beta; availability is not universal. |
| Other local methods | Country-specific markets | Mollie and PayPal list additional options such as Swish, TWINT, MyBank and Trustly, subject to eligibility. |
A method appearing in a processor’s general dashboard does not prove that the WordPress extension supports it. Check the extension’s own method list and your account’s approval status.
Choosing a gateway for WooCommerce
No provider is universally best. Compare the following practical options against your countries, methods and business model.
| Option | Documented capabilities | Checks before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe for WooCommerce | Cards, express checkout, local methods and buy-now-pay-later options; 3D Secure support. | Your business must be in a supported Stripe country. Method display can depend on customer country, currency, product type and Stripe approval. Transaction fees are set by Stripe. |
| Mollie for WooCommerce | International cards plus methods including Bancontact, BLIK, EPS, iDEAL, SEPA Direct Debit, Swish and TWINT. | Confirm account approval, merchant and currency availability, and which methods are enabled for your account. |
| WooPayments | Payments managed inside the WooCommerce dashboard, with cards and methods such as Bancontact, EPS, iDEAL | Wero, Multibanco and Przelewy24. | Signup is limited to supported countries. Local methods appear only where eligible; SEPA Direct Debit is identified as closed beta in the documentation. |
| PayPal Payments | PayPal checkout and listed alternatives including Bancontact, BLIK, eps, iDEAL, MyBank, Przelewy24, SEPA Direct Debit and Trustly. | Alternative methods depend on buyer and currency eligibility. Advanced Card Processing is limited to select countries and requires evaluation and approval. |
Step-by-step setup in WordPress
1. Map your requirements
Write down your establishment country, target buyer countries, checkout currency, settlement currency, product categories and whether subscriptions are required. Mark the local methods that matter most in each market.

- An intuitive interface to easily accept payments and manage your sales.
- Strong, reliable Wi-Fi connection. Free SIM card and mobile data so you can process payments anywhere.
- Great battery capability with an additional charging station.
- A truly portable device. Stay in control of your business, wherever you go.
- Support when you need it. Get in touch with our US-based support through phone, email and chat.
2. Verify account eligibility
Use the provider’s current country-availability and onboarding documentation. Complete business verification before committing to a gateway. Do not assume that a provider available to buyers in your market is available to merchants established there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Install an official extension
- In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for the provider’s official or provider-maintained WooCommerce extension and install it.
- Activate it, then open WooCommerce → Settings → Payments.
- Choose the gateway’s setup or connection action and complete the provider authorization flow, or enter the credentials requested by that extension.
Mollie’s documented flow, for example, requires installing its plugin and entering the account API key after account approval. Use the credentials and connection method specified by the extension you selected.
4. Configure currency and methods
- Set the store currency under WooCommerce → Settings → General → Currency options.
- Open the gateway settings under WooCommerce → Settings → Payments.
- Enable cards and only the local methods relevant to your target countries.
- Check each method’s country, currency, product and recurring-payment restrictions.
Some gateways automatically decide which methods to display from the shopper’s country and device. A method can therefore be enabled in settings yet remain hidden for a particular order.

5. Secure the checkout
Make the entire site accessible over HTTPS before enabling live payments. WooCommerce gateway architectures can use redirects, hosted forms, iframes or direct on-page fields. Direct integrations require appropriate server security and may create additional PCI-compliance responsibilities. Installing a plugin alone does not make the whole site compliant.
6. Test before going live
- Turn on the provider’s test or sandbox mode.
- Place successful and failed test orders, including mobile checkout.
- Check authentication flows, including documented 3D Secure or SCA behavior.
- Confirm that paid, failed, cancelled and pending payments produce the correct WooCommerce order status.
- Test refunds and, if applicable, subscription renewal, cancellation and failed-recurring-payment handling.
- Switch to live mode only after removing test credentials and completing a real operational review.
Test mode is for validating the integration; it does not prove that every live bank, card or local-method scenario will behave identically.

Subscriptions and recurring charges

- The Clover Compact and Clover Mini /Station sync with each other through the Clover Dashboard and cloud-based network. This allows you to manage transactions, track sales, and access business data across both devices seamlessly. Plug in, not battery/mobile. Requires New Processing account through Powering POS. Currency conversion and settlement
Compare the currency your customer sees with the currency deposited to your bank account. Review conversion charges, supported presentment currencies and whether each local method requires a specific currency. A gateway’s method list can change when you change the store currency.
Country and device rules
Providers may use customer country, browser or device, product type, risk checks and approval status to decide what appears. Mobile express buttons can also differ from desktop checkout. Document the expected experience for each major market rather than relying on one test order.

Stripe’s WooCommerce extension documents 3D Secure, an additional bank-authentication step also known as Strong Customer Authentication. PayPal’s Advanced Card Processing documentation likewise describes SCA support for EEA requirements and related 3D Secure contingencies. These features do not mean every transaction will present the same challenge.

WooCommerce’s payment guidance notes that gateways such as Stripe or PayPal pass customer information from the site to the processor and identifies GDPR as a consideration for European sellers. Review the data sent, the processor terms and your privacy notices for the actual extension and configuration you deploy. This is operational guidance, not legal advice.
How to compare total cost and operations
- Transaction pricing: check the provider’s current rates for cards and each local method, including cross-border and currency-conversion charges. Avoid relying on an old generic fee table.
- Checkout conversion: compare redirects, hosted fields, express buttons, language, mobile usability and the number of steps required.
- Settlement: confirm payout timing, supported bank countries, currencies and reconciliation tools.
- Recurring payments: verify subscription support rather than inferring it from one-time method availability.
- Risk and disputes: understand 3D Secure behavior, chargebacks, refunds and who handles customer support.
- Data handling: record what customer and order fields leave WordPress and update notices and internal access controls accordingly.
- Support: check whether help is provided by the processor, the plugin maintainer or both.
Troubleshooting missing or failed methods
A local method is not visible
- Confirm the shopper’s billing country and the order currency.
- Check the method’s product and subscription restrictions.
- Verify that the method is supported by the installed WooCommerce extension, not only by the processor generally.
- Check account approval, activation and any regional limitations.
Payments remain pending or fail
- Review the provider dashboard and WooCommerce order notes for the exact status.
- Check webhook or callback configuration and confirm HTTPS is working.
- Repeat the flow in test mode with the provider’s documented test credentials.
- For 3D Secure or bank redirects, test return URLs, blocked pop-ups and mobile browser behavior.
Refunds or renewals do not work
Confirm that the method supports the operation, that the extension is current, and that the provider account has the required capability. Some payment methods support authorization and capture differently from cards, while recurring mandates may require separate setup.
