The phrase can mean ordinary Chromium controlled by Playwright or Puppeteer, a browser modified to adjust automation signals, or a hosted browser service that bundles browser execution with features such as session management, proxy routing, or CAPTCHA handling. These approaches can reduce some friction, but none makes an automated browser reliably indistinguishable from a person.
For permitted work on a site that renders content with JavaScript, start with ordinary browser automation and add complexity only after diagnosing a specific problem. For simple screenshot capture rather than extraction or interaction, ScreenshotNeo is a different kind of tool: it returns an image or PDF without requiring you to run a browser. The right choice depends on what the task actually needs.
What “stealth Chromium” means
Chromium is the open-source browser project underlying Chrome and other browsers. In this context, “stealth” is a loose label for efforts to make automated browsing less conspicuous or easier to operate against difficult pages. It is not a formal browser standard, and providers do not all mean the same thing by it.
The term commonly covers three different setups:
- Regular local automation: Playwright or Puppeteer drives Chromium to load a page, interact with it, and read rendered content.
- Automation with fingerprint-oriented changes: a browser or automation layer adjusts some browser-visible signals, such as the user agent or other fingerprint characteristics.
- A managed browser service: a provider runs browsers remotely and may add sessions, proxy routing, challenge handling, or a task-specific API.
These are materially different choices. A browser that loads pages locally does not automatically include proxy management or CAPTCHA support; a managed service may provide more infrastructure, but its capabilities, limits, and operating model are provider-specific.

Why Chromium choice matters—and why it does not settle detection
Playwright’s default Chromium download is an open-source build, not the same thing as branded Google Chrome. Playwright can also control installed Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Its documentation distinguishes its default headless Chromium shell from newer Chrome headless mode; the Chromium project can also move ahead of branded browser releases. Differences may matter for compatibility and rendering, but browser choice alone does not establish whether a site will accept automation.
A user-agent string is just one possible signal. Detection systems can consider browser and network characteristics as well as interaction patterns. A page may also fail for ordinary reasons—such as a navigation timeout, an expired session, or an element that has not appeared—so “it blocked my scraper” should be a diagnosis to investigate, not an automatic cue to add fingerprint changes.
What the evidence says about “undetectable” browsing
Two 2026 preprints illustrate why universal stealth promises are not justified. In “On the Internet, Nobody Knows You’re an LLM Bot: Unmasking Web Agents with Multi-Layer Fingerprinting,” the authors evaluated six LLM-based web agents against honeysites using network-, HTTP-, and browser-level signals. They report that all tested agents were distinguishable from humans and from one another using multiple signal layers, and that stealth methods sometimes increased detectability. The authors summarize one finding as: “stealth and anti-detection mechanisms often increase detectability rather than decrease it.” Those are results for the agents and honeysites in that study, not a universal verdict on every browser, service, or website.
A separate 2026 preprint focused on behavioral detection under browser automation. Its controlled benchmark used 2,299 sessions across a five-level evasion ladder. The authors report searching 9,401 gradient-boosted model feature subsets and observing precision of 0.994 for an agent in a selected two-feature setup. These are experimental results tied to that paper’s dataset, model choices, and protocol—not a forecast of accuracy for every commercial anti-bot system.
The practical conclusion is narrower than either “stealth works” or “stealth never works”: a particular technique may affect some signals in some conditions, but that does not guarantee access, human-like behavior, or success against an unknown site. A feature advertised by a vendor is a product claim, not an independent comparative result.
Choose the simplest approach that fits the job
| Approach | May fit when | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|
| Local Playwright or Puppeteer with Chromium | You are prototyping, testing a site you control, or automating a permitted workflow on a relatively permissive page. | You manage browser installation and updates, compute, retries, and session behavior. Playwright’s Chromium build can differ from branded Chrome. |
| Local automation with installed Chrome | A workflow depends on a branded browser or a specific browser channel. | Chrome is not installed by Playwright by default; browser version and headless mode can change rendering or compatibility. |
| Managed browser, such as Browserless | You want remote execution, a documented API or SDK, managed sessions, or additional browser features. | Check endpoint differences, session limits, authentication, regional availability, pricing, and data handling. Browserless documents separate Chromium, Chrome, and stealth BrowserQL endpoints. |
| Hosted scraping browser, such as Bright Data Scraping Browser | You are considering a hosted browser bundled with scraping infrastructure. | Its listed anti-detection and scale capabilities are vendor-authored claims. Compare reliability, cost, session continuity, data handling, and the target site’s restrictions independently. |
Browserless describes BrowserQL as a GraphQL interface for navigation, interaction, extraction, screenshots, and related operations; it also documents a typed Browser Automation Protocol SDK for TypeScript or Python. Its documentation positions stealth routes, an unblock API, and CAPTCHA solving as parts of its approach to detection challenges. Bright Data’s tutorial lists capabilities including TLS fingerprints, IP rotation, retries, and CAPTCHA solving for its Scraping Browser. Treat those descriptions as statements by the respective providers, not as independently verified performance rankings.

No neutral head-to-head performance benchmark across these options is established here. Before selecting one, compare the page’s technical needs and your operational constraints rather than relying on a “stealth” label.
Evaluate the task before choosing a browser
- Content and interaction: Is the required information in the initial HTML, or does the page need JavaScript execution, a click, scrolling, or a wait for a particular element?
- Compatibility: Do you need Playwright or Puppeteer directly, a remote browser protocol, or a higher-level API or SDK?
- State: Does the task require cookies, authentication, or a session that must persist between visits?
- Operations: What concurrency, retry behavior, logging, deployment, and support do you need? Who will maintain browser versions and execution capacity?
- Cost and data handling: Compare the total service and maintenance cost, how page data is processed, and where execution takes place. Check current vendor terms and plan limits.
- Permission: Review the site’s official API, published terms, robots directives, rate limits, and permission requirements before automating it.
If a suitable official API or data feed is available and its terms permit your use, it may be a more stable way to obtain the data than rendering pages. A CAPTCHA solver or anti-bot feature does not itself grant permission to access a site. For sensitive account actions, use explicit user authorization and require a review step before an irreversible action.

Start with a simple, permitted Playwright workflow
For a site where automated access is allowed, begin with ordinary browser automation. The example below uses Playwright’s Python package to open a page, wait for a chosen element, and print its rendered text. Replace the example URL and selector with values appropriate to a site you are authorized to access. The selector wait is intentional: JavaScript-rendered content may not exist immediately after navigation.
- Install Playwright and its default Chromium browser:
python -m pip install playwright python -m playwright install chromium - Save this as
read_page.py. SetPAGE_URLto the permitted page andREADY_SELECTORto an element that indicates the content is ready.import asyncio from playwright.async_api import async_playwright PAGE_URL = "https://example.com" READY_SELECTOR = "main" async def main(): async with async_playwright() as p: browser = await p.chromium.launch(headless=True) page = await browser.new_page() try: response = await page.goto( PAGE_URL, wait_until="domcontentloaded", timeout=30_000, ) if response is not None: print("HTTP status:", response.status) await page.locator(READY_SELECTOR).wait_for(timeout=15_000) print((await page.locator(READY_SELECTOR).inner_text()).strip()) finally: await browser.close() asyncio.run(main()) - Run it with
python read_page.py. If the selector is absent, use browser inspection on a permitted page to identify a stable element; do not simply replace a clear access restriction with stealth features.
The example waits for the DOM to be ready and then for a specific element. It does not assume that every page is fully loaded at that point, nor does it attempt to bypass a challenge. If the task needs a different event, interaction, or longer load window, make that requirement explicit and handle timeouts rather than sleeping for an arbitrary interval.

If the goal is a screenshot or PDF—not extracting page data, clicking through a workflow, or maintaining a browser session—you may not need to operate Chromium yourself. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API takes a URL and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. A one-call cURL example is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. For screenshot jobs, its stated differentiators are practical: it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
ScreenshotNeo is a fit for rendered captures, not a replacement for a scraping browser when you need custom extraction, arbitrary interactions, or persistent browser state. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshooting a browser automation run
- Navigation times out: The page may be slow, still loading, or waiting on resources that do not finish. Check the URL and network conditions, choose a suitable navigation event, and set a deliberate timeout. Do not interpret a timeout alone as proof of bot detection.
- The expected content is missing: It may be rendered later or require an interaction. Wait for a meaningful selector or event, verify that the selector matches the current page, and inspect the permitted workflow’s resulting page state.
- A page works in Chrome but not Playwright’s default browser: Browser builds and headless modes can differ. Check the installed versions and, if branded-browser behavior is important, test with an installed Chrome or Edge channel that Playwright can control.
- A session is unexpectedly logged out: Confirm whether the workflow preserves the required cookies and state between runs. Do not assume a fresh browser context shares state with another one.
- You see a CAPTCHA, bot check, or access denial: First verify authorization, access terms, rate limits, session state, and whether the site offers an API. Do not treat a challenge as a technical invitation to evade the site’s controls.
- A hosted browser behaves differently from a local one: Verify the provider endpoint, browser type, session settings, authentication, and current service limits. Provider routes and features are not necessarily interchangeable.
Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Browser rendering is useful when a task depends on page execution or interaction, but it adds moving parts compared with reading a static response or using an API. Each run may consume execution time and resources; retries can multiply that work. Make navigation and readiness conditions explicit, limit concurrency to what the target and your infrastructure permit, and log enough context to distinguish a page change from a timeout or session failure.
Local execution gives you direct control over browser configuration but makes updates, runtime capacity, and operational recovery your responsibility. A hosted service can reduce infrastructure work or provide a different control surface, while adding vendor-specific limits, data-handling considerations, and recurring cost. There is no neutral performance comparison here that would justify promising a particular success rate or ranking one provider for every site.
Frequently asked questions
Is “stealth Chromium” a specific browser you can install?
No. It is an informal category label. Check what a particular tool actually changes or manages—browser build, fingerprint-related settings, remote execution, sessions, proxies, or challenge handling—before treating it as a defined product type.
