To set up AMP on WordPress, install the official AMP for WordPress plugin, choose a mode that fits your theme, and validate representative pages before launch. Start with Transitional if compatibility is uncertain: it keeps your regular site available while you check AMP pages. AMP is an implementation choice, not a guaranteed Google ranking boost.

Choose the AMP mode that fits your site

The official AMP for WordPress plugin is Google’s recommended route for creating AMP versions of WordPress sites. Its three modes differ in how many versions they serve and how closely AMP pages can match the regular site. See the AMP for WordPress project.

Mode Versions served Theme compatibility and design Maintenance and interactions
Standard One AMP version of the site. Best when the theme and plugins are AMP-compatible or their incompatibilities have been resolved; AMP is the site’s single version. There is one version to maintain. Site interactions must work within the AMP implementation.
Transitional AMP and non-AMP versions, using one theme. Useful when compatibility is uncertain and you want to review AMP pages without replacing the regular site. Both versions need checking. Keeping the same theme can help preserve design and interactions, but confirm behavior page by page.
Reader AMP and non-AMP versions, with a separate AMP theme. For a highly incompatible theme or when a simplified AMP design is acceptable; visual parity may be lower. The separate AMP theme requires its own review, and complex site interactions may not carry over as-is.

Begin with Transitional when you do not yet know whether your theme and plugins work with AMP. Move to Standard after resolving incompatibilities and confirming the AMP version works as the sole version. Choose Reader if the current theme is highly incompatible and a simpler AMP presentation suits your site.

Install the plugin and configure a mode

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New, search for “AMP,” and select the official AMP for WordPress plugin. Install and activate it. Google’s AMP guidance points WordPress users to this plugin: AdSense guidance for AMP on WordPress.
  2. Open the AMP setup or settings screen provided by the plugin and select Standard, Transitional, or Reader according to the compatibility trade-offs above. Labels and screen layout can change between plugin releases.
  3. Use the plugin’s setup and validation tools to review your site’s AMP configuration. The developer tools can show validation status, the source responsible for invalid markup, CSS budget usage, and when the page was last checked; see AMP plugin developer tools.

The WordPress.org listing reported AMP for WordPress 1.8.1 in 2026, with WordPress 5.0 or later listed as supported and a release date of 2026-06-10. Plugin versions can change, so check the listing and your installed version before relying on those details: AMP for WordPress on WordPress.org.

Validate pages before launch

Do not treat activation as proof that every template is valid. Check a representative sample that reflects how people use your site, then fix errors before relying on AMP URLs in search.

  1. Preview representative templates. Check posts, pages, archives, and media-heavy layouts in AMP. Include pages with forms, embeds, menus, or other interactive features that matter to your visitors.
  2. Inspect plugin diagnostics. Use the plugin’s validation tools to find invalid markup and identify whether it came from the theme or a plugin. Review CSS budget usage and the last-checked information as well as the status.
  3. Test the full URLs with Google. Run the AMP Test on the complete canonical and AMP URLs. Use the Rich Results Test to check how Google parses structured data.
  4. Check the URL relationship. When a page has a separate AMP URL, the canonical page should point to it with rel="amphtml", and the AMP page should link back to the canonical URL with rel="canonical". Google explains the required relationship in its AMP validation and setup guidance.
  5. Confirm crawlability. Make sure robots.txt, robots meta tags, and X-Robots-Tag headers do not block Googlebot from the canonical page, AMP page, or relevant structured-data links.
  6. Compare content and data. Keep the main content and user actions equivalent across versions where possible, and use matching structured-data markup on canonical and AMP pages. See Google’s structured data guidance.
  7. Monitor Search Console. Check the AMP Status report for critical issues and warnings after launch. Google classifies pages with critical issues as invalid; warnings may leave a page eligible for ordinary search results but can limit AMP-specific features. Aim for zero critical issues. Details are in Search Console’s AMP status documentation.

What AMP means for SEO

AMP does not automatically improve rankings. Google says, “Google Search indexes AMP pages just like other web pages, and applies the same standard to all pages, regardless of the technology used to build the page.” Read Google Search Central’s explanation of AMP in Google Search.

Structured data can make an AMP page eligible for rich results, but eligibility is not a promise that Google will display one. AMP’s practical value depends on whether its implementation works for your site and serves your visitors; it should not substitute for crawlable pages, sound content, or correct structured data.

Common setup problems and what to check

  • A page is invalid: Open the plugin’s validation results and identify the theme or plugin responsible for the invalid markup. Correct or remove the source where feasible, then rerun validation on affected templates.
  • The AMP page looks or behaves differently: Compare the same template in both versions. Check whether a theme component or plugin feature is incompatible. Transitional preserves the regular version during review; Reader allows a separate, simplified AMP theme if the main theme is highly incompatible.
  • Google cannot discover the AMP version: Verify the canonical page’s rel="amphtml" link, the AMP page’s canonical link, and that robots directives do not block either page or relevant structured-data links.
  • A rich result does not appear: Use the Rich Results Test to check parsing, but remember valid structured data only establishes eligibility; Google does not guarantee a rich result.
  • Search Console reports an issue: Distinguish critical errors from warnings. Resolve critical issues to make pages valid; review warnings because they can restrict AMP-specific features even when ordinary search eligibility remains.
