WordPress editor styling has two separate jobs: loading CSS so the editing canvas resembles your site, and registering named formats that writers can choose from a toolbar menu. Use add_editor_style() for the preview, theme.json for standard block-theme design settings, and TinyMCE style_formats plus the styleselect button for selectable classic-editor formats.
Choose the right method for your editor

Load CSS in the classic Visual editor
1. Create the editor stylesheet
In the active theme directory, create editor-style.css. Target the editable content rather than WordPress admin controls:

add_action( 'after_setup_theme', 'my_theme_editor_styles' );add_editor_style() looks for the stylesheet relative to the theme root and links it to TinyMCE when the file exists. It accepts a filename or an array of filenames; editor-style.css is the default. In a child theme, WordPress checks the child and parent theme locations at the same relative path, so a child theme can override the parent editor file.
Make Gutenberg match a classic theme
When a classic theme uses the block editor, declare editor-style support before loading the stylesheet:

The block editor scopes content styles and can rewrite a body { ... } rule to .editor-styles-wrapper { ... }. Avoid broad resets: rules intended for a site-wide reset can also alter editor controls and make the editing interface difficult to use.
Use theme.json in a block theme
Block themes should put standard design-system values in theme.json instead of duplicating them in ad-hoc editor CSS. The top-level styles property supports global settings, individual elements, and individual blocks. Users can adjust these values in Appearance > Editor > Styles.

}Use this approach for colors, typography, buttons, quotes, and other settings represented by WordPress global styles. Keep a separate editor stylesheet for custom selectors or presentation that theme.json cannot express.
Add a named style to the TinyMCE toolbar
Loading CSS does not create a menu item. To let writers select “Notice box” or “Lead paragraph,” enable TinyMCE’s hidden styleselect control and provide matching format definitions.

The front-end stylesheet must define those classes too, or the format will appear correctly in the editor but not on published pages. After applying a format, switch to the text or code view and inspect the generated markup; wrapper behavior can vary with the surrounding HTML and TinyMCE configuration.
Understand TinyMCE CSS options
TinyMCE’s content_css loads one or more external stylesheets into classic iframe content. content_style injects CSS inline into the editable area. Both affect the content being edited, not the toolbar or the surrounding WordPress admin interface. In a WordPress theme, add_editor_style() is the usual way to enqueue the external file; direct TinyMCE configuration is more appropriate when a plugin owns the editor integration.

Keep editor and front-end markup consistent
- Define reusable classes in the theme’s front-end stylesheet and in the editor stylesheet when the editor must preview them.
- Use the same class spelling and capitalization in CSS and TinyMCE format definitions.
- Prefer selectors for paragraphs, headings, links, lists, buttons, and content blocks over selectors aimed at admin chrome.
- Keep editor-only spacing modest so the canvas remains comfortable to edit.
- Do not use a global reset without testing the block toolbar, inserter, sidebars, and TinyMCE controls.
Troubleshoot a stale or incorrect preview
- Verify the file location. A filename passed to
add_editor_style()is relative to the active theme root. Confirm that the file exists there, or use the documented URL/filter approach when a plugin hosts the CSS. - Check theme support. For Gutenberg in a classic theme, confirm that
add_theme_support( 'editor-styles' )runs beforeadd_editor_style(). - Compare class names. The CSS class in the editor stylesheet must exactly match the class registered in
style_formats. - Inspect the correct canvas. Classic TinyMCE uses an editor iframe; Gutenberg uses the block canvas and its content wrapper. Inspect that content area rather than the surrounding admin page.
- Remove broad resets. Temporarily disable reset rules that may be changing editor controls.
- Clear caches. Clear the browser cache and any performance or asset-cache plugin after changing editor CSS, then reload the editor.
- Check the theme model. In a block theme, move standard color, typography, element, and block rules into
theme.jsonwhere possible.
A practical decision guide
You only need the editor to look like the site
Create an editor stylesheet and load it with add_editor_style(). Add editor-styles support when the content is rendered in Gutenberg from a classic theme.
You need site-wide block and element settings
Use theme.json in a block theme, or migrate the theme toward that model. This keeps values in WordPress’s global styles system and lets users adjust supported settings in the Site Editor.

You need writers to choose a format
Register styleselect and style_formats, then provide matching CSS in both the editor and front end. CSS alone cannot add a toolbar option.
