To add a WordPress site to Yandex Webmaster, sign in, enter the site’s exact primary URL (including http or https and the www choice), verify that you control it, and then check crawling settings. You can submit an XML sitemap afterward, but registration alone does not guarantee indexing, rankings, or faster inclusion in Yandex search.

1. Choose the correct site address

Open Yandex Webmaster’s Getting started page and sign in with your Yandex account. Add the address that represents your site in search, not a convenient variant.

  • Use the live protocol: https:// if the site is secured, otherwise http://.
  • Use the intended host name, with or without www.
  • If one address redirects to another, identify the final primary address first and add that version.

Yandex treats primary and alternate addresses as related but distinguishes verifying the primary address from managing alternates. Its guidance on primary and alternate site addresses explains the difference.

2. Add the property and verify ownership

After you add the URL, Yandex asks you to prove management rights. The account’s current screen determines which verification options are available. Choose a method you can leave in place because Yandex periodically checks that the proof still exists. Verification can take up to 24 hours, according to Yandex’s verification instructions.

Verification methods compared

Method What you need on WordPress or your host When it fits
Meta tag Ability to add Yandex’s <meta> tag to the site’s HTML head, usually through your theme, a header-injection feature, or a suitable SEO plugin. Useful when you can edit site output but do not have root-file or DNS access.
HTML file Ability to upload Yandex’s verification file to the site’s document root so it is reachable at the exact URL Yandex specifies. Useful when you have hosting file access.
DNS TXT record Administrative access to the domain’s DNS provider; add the TXT value Yandex supplies. Useful when DNS is managed separately from WordPress or hosting.
CMS-specific flow Follow the WordPress or hosting integration shown in your Yandex account, if one is offered. Choose it only when the on-screen flow is available and you can maintain it.

Meta-tag verification in WordPress

  1. Copy the complete meta tag from Yandex Webmaster.
  2. Place it in the site-wide <head> output using a trusted WordPress header feature, your SEO plugin’s verification field, or a child theme. Avoid editing a parent theme if an update could erase the change.
  3. Clear any page, server, or CDN cache.
  4. Return to Yandex Webmaster and select the verification button.

Do not remove the tag after approval unless you have confirmed that Yandex no longer requires it; later checks can invalidate ownership if the proof disappears.

HTML-file verification

  1. Download the exact file Yandex provides.
  2. Upload it to the web root, not to a WordPress media folder or an arbitrary subdirectory.
  3. Test the full file URL in a browser and confirm it returns the file rather than a login page or a WordPress 404.
  4. Click the verification control in Yandex Webmaster.

DNS verification

  1. Copy Yandex’s TXT name and value exactly.
  2. Add the record at the DNS provider authoritative for your domain.
  3. Wait for the record to become visible, then start verification in Yandex Webmaster.

DNS propagation time depends on the provider and record settings. Keep the TXT record in place after verification.

3. Make sure Yandex can reach the site

Yandex says the site must answer requests from its main robot and Webmaster robot with HTTP 200 OK, or redirect to a page that returns 200 OK. A maintenance page, password wall, broken redirect chain, firewall rule, or bot challenge can prevent adding or verifying the property. Check:

  • The exact protocol and host in Yandex match the address that actually resolves.
  • HTTP-to-HTTPS and non-www-to-www redirects end at one reachable canonical page.
  • The home page and verification location are not blocked by hosting security, basic authentication, or an IP allowlist.
  • Your server does not return a 4xx or 5xx response to Yandex’s crawlers.

If verification fails, correct the URL or access problem, confirm that the meta tag, file, or DNS record is published in the expected location, and retry. Allow up to 24 hours for rights verification.

4. Submit a WordPress sitemap (optional)

A sitemap helps Yandex discover URLs that are numerous, deeply nested, or not well connected by navigation. It is not a requirement for every small site, and it does not guarantee that every submitted URL will appear in search; see Yandex’s sitemap guidance.

Find the sitemap URL

Use the XML sitemap generated by your WordPress SEO or sitemap system. Common WordPress installations expose an index such as /sitemap_index.xml or /wp-sitemap.xml; use the URL that actually loads on your site rather than assuming a filename. Open it in a browser and confirm it belongs to the same protocol and host property you verified.

Add it in Yandex Webmaster

  1. Open the verified property.
  2. Go to the Sitemap files page.
  3. Enter the complete sitemap URL and submit it.
  4. Alternatively, add a Sitemap: directive pointing to the XML file in the root robots.txt, then let Yandex discover it.

Yandex also supports TXT sitemaps, but XML is the recommended format. One sitemap file can contain up to 50,000 links and be up to 50 MB uncompressed, according to its Sitemap files documentation. Split larger collections into multiple files and submit a sitemap index.

Allow time for processing

Yandex says sitemap processing usually occurs within two weeks. During that period, keep the file available, make sure it returns a successful response, and do not block it in robots.txt. If it remains unprocessed after two weeks, validate the XML, confirm that every URL uses the property’s exact protocol and host, and inspect the server response.

5. Check robots.txt before changing crawl rules

Yandex expects robots.txt at the site root (for example, https://example.com/robots.txt) and expects indexing bots to be able to fetch it normally. Use Yandex’s robots.txt documentation and analyzer to inspect the file and test whether selected URLs are allowed.

  • Confirm the file is root-located and returns HTTP 200 OK.
  • Check that the sitemap directive, if present, uses the full correct URL.
  • Test important pages and assets before publishing a new Disallow rule.
  • Do not remove crawl restrictions blindly; a rule can stop Yandex from fetching pages you want indexed.

6. What to expect after setup

Use the property dashboard to monitor crawl and indexing information once Yandex has fetched the site. Adding a property gives you management and diagnostic tools; it is not a promise of search visibility. Yandex explicitly says that a site added to Webmaster may not appear in search results, and its My sites help likewise does not present registration as an indexing guarantee.

A sitemap is a discovery signal, not an inclusion decision. Yandex states that it does not guarantee that all URLs in a sitemap will be displayed in search results. Content quality, accessibility, crawl rules, duplicate URLs, and Yandex’s own selection systems still affect what is indexed.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

Symptom Checks to make Timing or remedy
Ownership verification fails Re-select the exact property URL; confirm the proof is live in the required location; test the site and verification URL publicly; check redirects and access controls. Yandex may take up to 24 hours to verify rights.
Sitemap rejected or not processed Use the same protocol and host as the property; verify XML syntax and HTTP response; ensure robots.txt does not block the file. Normal processing can take up to two weeks.
Pages are not crawled Run the URL through Yandex’s robots.txt analyzer; inspect Disallow rules, server errors, login barriers, and redirect chains. Correct the blocking condition, then allow Yandex time to recrawl.
Site is still absent from search Confirm the site is reachable and technically crawlable, but do not treat registration or sitemap submission as a guarantee. Webmaster registration does not itself speed indexing or ensure inclusion.
