To capture a YouTube frame at an exact timestamp, open the video on a computer, seek near the target time, pause, use YouTube’s comma and period keys to move one frame at a time, and then capture only the video area with your operating system’s screenshot tool. A timestamp link is different: it opens the video at a position but does not save an image.
Capture the exact frame in YouTube’s desktop player
This workflow uses YouTube’s built-in controls and the screenshot feature already included with Windows or macOS. It is the most dependable way to select a particular displayed frame because you can inspect the image before saving it.
1. Open the video and seek close to the target
- Open the YouTube video on a computer and click inside the player.
- Drag the progress bar close to the required time, or use the keyboard for coarse movement. The Left Arrow and Right Arrow keys move five seconds. J and L move 10 seconds backward or forward. Number keys 1 through 9 jump to 10% through 90% of the video. These controls are documented in YouTube’s keyboard-shortcut guide.
- For example, if the target is 1:15, move to roughly 1:10, then pause and fine-tune.
In YouTube’s newer computer experience, the player may need to be clicked before shortcuts respond. If a key appears to do nothing, click the video itself rather than the page background, then try again.
2. Pause and step one frame at a time
- Press the spacebar or click the play/pause control.
- Press the comma key (,) to move back one frame.
- Press the period key (.) to move forward one frame.
- Continue until the desired image is visible. Keep the video paused while stepping.
Comma and period are frame-step controls, not one-second jumps. They are useful after an arrow-key or J/L seek has brought you near the target. If the frame does not change, confirm that playback is paused and that the player has keyboard focus. YouTube documents these shortcuts alongside the other controls in its official shortcut list.

3. Capture the video image
Capture a region around the picture, excluding the title, controls, browser tabs and surrounding page. A region capture gives a cleaner still than photographing the entire browser window.
Windows 10 and 11
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
- Choose the rectangular snip mode if it is not already selected.
- Drag around the video image. Release the mouse to take the snip.
- Open the notification or Snipping Tool window to annotate, copy or save the image.

macOS
- Press Shift-Command-4 to select a rectangular region, then drag around the video.
- For additional controls, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot panel.
- Release the selection and locate the saved image in the destination shown by the Screenshot controls, normally the desktop unless you changed it.
Apple’s instructions for region captures and the Screenshot panel are in Take screenshots or screen recordings on Mac.
4. Check and crop the saved still
- Verify that the player was paused and that the frame is the one you intended.
- Crop away browser chrome, playback controls, black bars or unrelated page content.
- If controls appeared because the pointer was over the player, move the pointer away, wait for controls to disappear, and capture again.
- Keep the original capture until you have checked the crop and file format.

The shortcuts are for YouTube’s computer player. Mobile-specific instructions were not established by the cited help pages, so do not assume these exact keys work in the YouTube mobile app or on a phone browser.

Screenshot versus a timestamp link
Use a screenshot when you need an image file for notes, a presentation, documentation or an edit. Use a timestamp link when you want someone to open the video at a moment.
YouTube’s older official example creates a deep link by adding #t=1m15s to a video URL; the YouTube Team described this in its October 30, 2008 post, Link To The Best Parts In Your Videos. A link such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID#t=1m15s identifies a playback position. It does not capture, download or attach a still image. A viewer may also see a different frame if playback, buffering or page state changes.
Getting a cleaner and more repeatable still
Hide transient controls
Move the pointer outside the player after pausing and wait for the control bar to fade. If the controls remain, click elsewhere only after confirming that doing so will not resume playback, or use the operating system’s region selector while the controls are hidden.
Account for black bars and overlays
Videos with a different aspect ratio than the player can show black bars. Include only the picture area if you want a clean image, or retain the bars if preserving the player’s full geometry matters. Closed captions, live-chat overlays and creator-added graphics are part of the displayed frame; crop them only if they are outside the image you need.

Capture several moments
For a short sequence, seek once, pause, step with the comma or period key, and save each selected frame before moving on. Name files with a timestamp such as video-01m15s.png so they sort chronologically. A browser extension can automate repeated frame captures, but the Chrome Web Store listing for Screenshot for Youtube & Other Video Services is a vendor listing, not an independent test. Review its permissions and maintenance status before installing any extension.
Troubleshooting
The arrow, J, L, comma or period key does nothing
- Click the video player first; the newer computer interface may require focus.
- Make sure the video is paused before using comma or period. Frame stepping is not available during normal playback.
- Click away from a text field, browser address bar or another control that may be receiving the keystroke.
- Reload the page if the player is stuck, then seek again.
The capture includes controls or the wrong part of the page
- Move the pointer away and wait for the control bar to disappear.
- Use a region capture rather than a full-screen capture.
- Crop the result in Snipping Tool, Preview or another image editor.
The image looks soft
- Maximize the player before capturing so the displayed video is larger.
- Use the original player image rather than enlarging a small crop afterward.
- Check that browser zoom is not making the player unusually small.
The frame is slightly early or late
Seek to the nearest recognizable scene, pause, and use comma or period repeatedly. Do not rely on the progress-bar time alone; its display is coarse compared with individual frames.
I need a link, not an image
Use a timestamp deep link with the #t= fragment. Remember that it opens a location in the video and does not create a screenshot.
