The key check comes first: a GitHub repository is not automatically an installable WordPress package. Confirm its folder layout, required build steps, and intended branch, tag, commit, or release before installing.
Choose the installation method

Check the GitHub project before downloading
Open the repository README and release instructions before choosing Code > Download ZIP or a release asset. Check these items:
- Installable directory: identify whether the plugin or theme is at the repository root or inside a subdirectory. A repository containing documentation, tests, and several packages may not install correctly from its root archive.
- Build requirements: look for Composer, npm, Vite, bundler, or other commands that generate PHP dependencies, JavaScript, CSS, or production assets. A source checkout may be incomplete until those commands finish.
- Version reference: use the project’s documented release, tag, branch, or commit rather than assuming the default branch is stable.
- Package supplied by the maintainer: when a release includes a built ZIP, it is usually the safer choice for a regular site because it represents the project’s prepared output.
- Compatibility: verify the project’s stated WordPress, PHP, and other dependency requirements before activation.
If the project requires a build, follow its own commands in a development environment and install the resulting ZIP. Do not expect WordPress to run Composer or npm during an admin upload.
Install a plugin from a GitHub ZIP in WordPress admin
- Download the project’s installable plugin ZIP from its release page or documented package location. Confirm that the archive contains the plugin’s actual directory and main plugin file at the expected level.
- Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins > Add New Plugin.
- Select Upload Plugin, choose the
.zipfile, and select Install Now. WordPress describes this form as allowing you to “install or update” a plugin by uploading a ZIP. - When installation completes, select Activate Plugin, or activate it later from Plugins > Installed Plugins.
If WordPress reports that no valid plugin was found, inspect the archive. Common causes are a repository wrapper folder, a plugin nested one level too deeply, or missing generated files. Repackage the actual plugin directory only after checking the project’s instructions; do not simply delete folders that may be required at runtime.

Install a theme from a GitHub ZIP in WordPress admin
- Download the project’s prepared theme ZIP or create one according to its build instructions.
- In WordPress, open Appearance > Themes > Add New.
- Select Upload Theme, choose the ZIP, and select Install Now. WordPress provides this flow to install or update a theme from a ZIP.
- After installation, select Activate if you want the site to use it immediately. For a block theme, review the Site Editor after activation; for a classic theme, check the Customizer or theme settings supplied by the project.
A theme ZIP must contain the theme directory in the layout WordPress expects. A GitHub archive that wraps the project in an extra repository-name folder can fail validation even when the theme code itself is present.
Install with WP-CLI
WP-CLI accepts a plugin or theme slug, a local ZIP path, or a remote ZIP URL. The commands below use local packages, which avoids depending on a changing branch archive.

wp theme install ../my-theme.zip --activateUse the current WP-CLI command reference for options and syntax. Avoid disabling TLS verification unless you understand the security consequences. After installation, verify the result with wp plugin list or wp theme list, then check the site and error logs before enabling the software on a production site.

Load a GitHub directory in WordPress Playground
Playground can load repository files without first making a ZIP when the directory is directly usable. Its Blueprint installPlugin step accepts a git:directory resource that can identify a repository, a ref, and a path inside that repository. This is useful for development previews and testing a particular branch, tag, or commit.
Conceptually, the Blueprint points to:
- the Git repository URL;
- the ref to check out, such as a branch, tag, or commit; and
- the subdirectory containing the plugin.
If the repository needs Composer, npm, or another build process, use the project’s build workflow and publish a built ZIP, then have Playground install that ZIP from its URL. A raw source directory is not a substitute for generated dependencies.

The Playground browser workflow can also import a theme from GitHub: choose Import from GitHub, authenticate when prompted, provide the repository URL, choose Theme, and identify the theme directory. This imports the theme into a Playground instance; it does not install the theme on an unrelated hosted WordPress account.

“The package could not be installed” or “No valid plugin found”
- Open the ZIP and locate the real plugin or theme directory.
- Remove only an unnecessary repository wrapper folder when the project’s layout confirms that it is not part of the package.
- Use the release’s built ZIP instead of the source archive if assets or dependencies are generated.
The plugin installs but crashes or shows missing files
- Run the documented Composer or npm build commands.
- Check PHP and WordPress version requirements.
- Confirm that you selected the intended release or commit, not an unfinished development branch.
Playground cannot load the repository
- Set the correct repository ref and subdirectory.
- Use a built ZIP when the project requires a build step.
- For preview workflows that fetch an artifact, ensure the artifact URL is publicly reachable without authentication; private-repository access is not provided by the default preview setup.
The update overwrote local changes
Do not treat a ZIP upload or --force installation as a source-control merge. Preserve custom changes in a fork or development workflow, and back up the site before replacing an active plugin or theme.

A safe repeatable workflow
- Read the repository’s README and release notes.
- Choose a release, tag, branch, or commit deliberately.
- Determine the exact plugin or theme subdirectory.
- Build dependencies and assets if the project requires them.
- Test the resulting package in a staging site or Playground.
- Install through admin or WP-CLI, then activate only after checking compatibility.
- Keep the package and selected version recorded so the installation can be reproduced or rolled back.
The Bottom Line
Use a maintainer-provided, built ZIP for a normal WordPress site; use WP-CLI for scripted ZIP installs; and use Playground’s Git directory support for source-based previews. The repository’s folder layout, build requirements, and selected ref determine whether any particular GitHub download is actually installable.
