AI can produce a first translation of your website quickly, but a reliable multilingual site needs more than a button that changes words. The practical workflow is to define languages and regions, choose a CMS plugin or translation API, translate content in controlled batches, have a fluent person review important pages, publish each language at its own crawlable URL, add correct hreflang annotations, and maintain translations whenever the source changes.

1. Decide which languages and locales you actually serve

Start with the audience and locations you want to support. A language version serves readers in another language; a country-targeted version also adapts spelling, currency, legal wording, and other regional details. Google distinguishes multilingual sites (multiple languages) from multi-regional sites (different countries), and one site can be both.

Write a localization brief

  • Target language and, when needed, locale (for example, French for France versus Canadian French).
  • Whether prices, dates, units, tax wording, support hours, and contact details change by region.
  • Which pages are in scope: marketing pages, blog posts, account screens, checkout, emails, forms, error messages, and legal documents.
  • The person responsible for approving terminology and legal text.

Do not assume that an AI model will infer these decisions correctly. Give it a glossary for product names, feature labels, names, and terms that must remain unchanged.

2. Choose an AI translation setup

Your site platform and review process usually determine the best implementation. A plugin is convenient for a content-management system; an API gives developers more control; a larger editorial team may need a localization system with assignments, approvals, and translation memory.

Approach Best fit What to verify before choosing
CMS translation plugin WordPress and similar sites where editors want to work inside the dashboard Theme and page-builder compatibility, language URLs, translated slugs and metadata, reviewer tools, storage and update behavior, supported locales, usage limits, and provider data terms
Managed translation service connected to the CMS Teams that want a hosted translation layer and a language switcher with less custom development URL structure, export and ownership of translations, workflow controls, language coverage, recurring cost, and how source edits trigger retranslation
Translation API Developers translating a custom site, application, or content pipeline API quotas and billing, caching, glossary support, privacy and retention terms, error handling, metadata and URL generation, and human-review integration
Hybrid workflow Organizations that machine-translate at scale but require human approval for priority content How drafts are marked, who can publish, how approved terms are reused, and how changed source segments are identified

These tools generate or manage translations; they do not prove that wording is culturally appropriate, legally correct, or suitable for your interface.

Examples of documented capabilities

  • TranslatePress documentation describes a free integration with Google Translate v2 API and paid integrations for DeepL API or TranslatePress AI. Those integrations require the relevant vendor account and API key. It also says each untranslated string is translated once and saved in the database.
  • TranslatePress AI describes a combination of large language models and neural machine translation, with translated content saved in the WordPress database while the original remains unchanged. Its word allocations are license-bound, so check the current plan rules.
  • Weglot’s WordPress developer documentation describes language paths such as /fr/about/, translated responses at those paths, a language button, and hreflang tags in the page head.
  • Google Cloud Translation API can be integrated directly into a site or application. Google says unaltered API output that is published and searchable must be designated as machine-translated content.

Those are vendor-documented features, not independent quality rankings. Confirm current pricing, limits, languages, and terms before committing.

3. Prepare content before sending it to an AI translator

Export or inventory the strings that visitors see. Translating only the navigation while leaving the main article, user-generated content, forms, or checkout in another language creates a confusing experience and can make language detection ambiguous.

Protect meaning and layout

  • Preserve brand names, people and place names, product identifiers, URLs, HTML entities, variables, and code.
  • Tell the system the audience, locale, tone, reading level, and whether the text is a label, heading, button, policy, or long-form article.
  • Use a glossary and translation memory so recurring terms are translated consistently.
  • Account for text expansion: a short English button may become much longer in another language and overflow a mobile layout.
  • Keep source IDs or segment keys so an edited sentence can be retranslated without overwriting approved, unrelated text.

Use a repeatable prompt or API payload

For each batch, identify the source locale and target locale, provide the glossary, require placeholders and links to remain intact, and request only the translated text in the same segment order. Store the source, generated draft, reviewer edits, approval status, and timestamp. This makes corrections auditable and prevents a later bulk run from silently replacing human edits.

4. Review before publishing

Treat AI output as a draft unless a qualified reviewer has approved it. Prioritize pages where a mistake affects revenue, trust, safety, or compliance.

Review these pages first

  1. Home and primary landing pages.
  2. Pricing, product, service, and comparison pages.
  3. Calls to action, signup, checkout, and contact forms.
  4. Privacy, cookie, terms, refund, warranty, and other policy pages.
  5. Support instructions and error messages.

Give the reviewer a concrete checklist

  • Meaning, omissions, and unintended additions.
  • Natural tone for the target locale, including formality and inclusive language.
  • Numbers, currencies, dates, decimal separators, units, and time zones.
  • Links, variables, product names, headings, buttons, and character limits.
  • Legal and regulatory wording, which may require a qualified local professional rather than a general translator.
  • Visual fit on desktop and mobile, including menus, tables, forms, and right-to-left layout where applicable.

Record approved terminology and feed those decisions back into the glossary. A fluent reviewer is a quality-control recommendation, not a guaranteed accuracy threshold.

5. Publish each language at a discoverable URL

Google recommends different URLs for each language version rather than changing the page only through cookies or browser settings. Use a consistent pattern such as subdirectories (example.com/fr/), subdomains, or country domains, then make the choice consistently across the site.

Add a visible language switcher with ordinary links. Do not rely on an automatic redirect based on a visitor’s browser language or IP address: redirects can stop users and crawlers from reaching versions they need. Let visitors change language after landing.

Keep one main language per page

Google says it determines language primarily from visible page content, not from a URL or a code-level lang attribute alone. Keep the main content and navigation in one language. Avoid displaying full side-by-side translations, and do not translate only template boilerplate while leaving the article or user-generated content in the source language.

6. Add and validate hreflang

Hreflang annotations tell search engines which language or regional alternate corresponds to a page. Every alternate should identify the others, including a return link to the original. Use valid language codes and an optional valid region code; consider x-default for a fallback page.

<link rel="alternate" hreflang="en" href="https://example.com/en/about/">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr" href="https://example.com/fr/about/">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr-CA" href="https://example.com/ca-fr/about/">
<link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://example.com/about/">

Place equivalent annotations in the HTML head, HTTP headers, or XML sitemaps according to your implementation. Common failures include a missing reciprocal link, an invalid language or region code, a non-canonical URL, or an alternate that returns an error. Test a representative set after every URL or locale change.

7. Connect translation to publishing and updates

Decide what happens when the source changes. Some integrations save translated strings and reuse them; others send changed segments back through an API. Define whether a changed page becomes a draft, whether approved translations are locked, and who receives the review task.

Control cost and data exposure

  • Check whether billing is by character, word, request, language, seat, or subscription allocation.
  • Set daily or monthly budgets and alerts where the provider supports them.
  • Cache or store approved results when your terms and privacy obligations allow it.
  • Review vendor rules for retention, training use, subprocessors, and transfer of confidential or personal data before sending content.
  • Verify language coverage and plan limits immediately before launch; they can change.

Keep a source-language page available for editors and a rollback path for bad batches. A failed translation request should not take the original page offline.

8. A practical launch checklist

  • Languages, locales, regional adaptations, and page scope are documented.
  • Glossary, placeholders, names, links, and layout constraints are protected.
  • AI drafts have been reviewed on priority pages by a fluent person.
  • Every language has a stable URL and a visible switcher.
  • Pages contain one primary language, including navigation and important user content.
  • Hreflang alternates use valid codes, canonical URLs, and reciprocal references.
  • Forms, metadata, structured content, emails, accessibility labels, and error states have been checked.
  • Update, approval, rollback, budget, and privacy procedures are documented.
  • If unaltered Google Cloud Translation API output is published and searchable, it is designated as machine-translated content as Google requires.

When AI translation is the wrong shortcut

Use specialist human translation first when a page contains safety-critical instructions, regulated claims, contracts, sensitive personal information, or creative copy whose effect depends on cultural nuance. AI can still help with drafts and terminology management, but publication responsibility remains with the site owner and the people approving the text.
