On an HP laptop, look across the top row and other secondary key legends for Prt Sc, Prt Scr, or Print Screen. Depending on the model, you may need to hold Fn. Pressing Print Screen normally copies an image to the Windows clipboard; Windows + Print Screen saves a PNG in Pictures > Screenshots. For a custom rectangle or quick edits, open Snipping Tool from Start.
Where is the Print Screen key on an HP laptop?
There is no single Print Screen location shared by every HP laptop. HP says keyboard functions and shortcuts vary with the computer, operating system, peripherals, keyboard and software. Inspect the top-row function keys first, then look for a smaller secondary legend on another key. The label may be abbreviated as Prt Sc or Prt Scr, or written as Print Screen.
On many HP laptop keyboards, Print Screen is a secondary function. In that case, hold Fn while pressing the key carrying the Print Screen symbol. HP’s shortcut guidance says that, on most laptop keyboards, the Fn key must be held before the key with the required symbol or icon; some laptops specifically require Fn + Print Screen.
If you cannot identify the marking, use the product manual for your exact HP model. Do not assume that a shortcut shown on one HP keyboard has the same key position or Fn behavior on another.

How to take a full-screen screenshot with Print Screen
- Find the marking. Locate Prt Sc, Prt Scr or Print Screen, including any small secondary legend.
- Try the key by itself. Press Print Screen once. If your HP model treats it as an Fn function, press and hold Fn, then press the Print Screen key.
- Open an image-capable app. Start an app that accepts an image from the clipboard.
- Paste the capture. Use the app’s paste command. The screenshot is an image on the clipboard, not yet a file in a folder.
- Save or edit it. Crop, annotate or otherwise edit in that app, then save in the format and location you need.
This method is useful when you want to inspect or edit the image before deciding where to store it. Clipboard contents can be replaced by the next copy operation, so save an important capture before copying something else.
How to save a screenshot automatically as a PNG
- Press Windows + Print Screen.
- If nothing happens, repeat with Fn: hold Fn and press the Windows and Print Screen combination required by your keyboard.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Look for the newly created PNG. HP’s guide describes sequential names such as Screenshot (1).
This shortcut is the quickest choice when you need a full-screen file rather than a clipboard image. It captures the complete display, so check that private windows or notifications are not visible before sharing the file.
How to capture only the active window
To copy the current window instead of the entire desktop, press Shift + Print Screen. If your keyboard assigns Print Screen to an Fn layer, use the Fn combination shown by your model’s layout. The result is copied to the Windows clipboard; paste it into an image-capable application and save it there.

Before using this shortcut, click the window you want so it is active. This avoids copying a different window that happened to have focus.

- Open Start and launch Snipping Tool.
- Choose the tool’s capture command and select the region you need rather than the whole display.
- Use Snipping Tool’s basic editing controls if you need to mark up the image.
- Save the result from Snipping Tool to the location and format you choose.
Snipping Tool is the better built-in option when a full-screen capture would include unrelated material. HP notes that a dedicated Snipping Tool key is available only on select products, so opening the app from Start is the dependable route when you do not see such a key.

Why Print Screen appears to do nothing
1. The key needs Fn
Try Fn + Print Screen. On some layouts, the visible Print Screen symbol belongs to a secondary function layer, so pressing the key alone invokes a different action.

2. The image is in the clipboard
Print Screen does not necessarily create a file. Paste immediately into an image-capable app to verify that the capture occurred. If you need a file without a paste step, use Windows + Print Screen and check Pictures > Screenshots.
3. You used the wrong key legend
Recheck every top-row and secondary legend for Prt Sc, Prt Scr or Print Screen. HP keyboard layouts differ, and a key that looks similar may control another function.

4. The shortcut differs on your model
HP cautions that behavior depends on the model, operating system, peripherals, keyboard and software. Consult the manual for the exact product when the documented combinations do not respond.

5. You expected a selected-area capture
Print Screen captures the whole screen, while Snipping Tool is intended for a more freely selected area. Open Snipping Tool from Start when you need only part of the display.
6. You expected a file but used a clipboard shortcut
Print Screen and Shift + Print Screen copy images. They do not, by themselves, explain where a file was saved. Use the Windows-plus-Print-Screen shortcut for the automatic PNG workflow.
Practical checks before you share a screenshot
- Confirm whether you captured the entire display, the active window or a selected region.
- Review the image for passwords, account details, private messages and notification pop-ups.
- If you used the clipboard method, save the image before another copy operation replaces it.
- If you used Windows + Print Screen, verify the PNG in Pictures > Screenshots and confirm that it is the newest sequentially named file.
- For a recurring model-specific problem, record the exact HP model and consult its manual rather than applying a shortcut from another keyboard.

Does every HP laptop have a dedicated Snipping Tool key?
No. HP documents that a dedicated Snipping Tool key appears only on select HP products; otherwise open Snipping Tool from Start.
What should I do if my keyboard has an unfamiliar icon instead of “Prt Sc”?
Use the manual for that exact HP model to identify the icon and required Fn combination. HP does not assign one universal location or behavior to every laptop keyboard.
