To let visitors enlarge text in WordPress, first make sure your theme supports browser text scaling without breaking the page. If you also want a visible on-page control, add a resizer suited to your theme: ReadEase documents a Gutenberg block for block themes, while Accessibility Font Resizer offers a separate plugin route. Whichever option you choose, test the site at 200% text size and confirm that no content or functionality is lost.
What a WordPress text resizer needs to achieve
The relevant accessibility target is not simply having a font-size button. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.4 says that, except for captions and images of text, text must be resizable without assistive technology up to 200% without loss of content or functionality. See the W3C explanation of Resize Text.
WAI describes scaling as primarily the responsibility of the browser or other user agent. A site owner should avoid disabling that scaling; an on-page control can be an additional convenience, but it is not a universal requirement. W3C’s G178 technique describes providing controls to increase and decrease text size incrementally up to 200%. W3C techniques are examples of ways to meet a criterion, not mandatory implementations.
Choose an approach for your theme
| Approach | Best fit | What the source documents |
|---|---|---|
| ReadEase | Block theme using the Site Editor | Gutenberg text-resizer block; multiple control styles, scale settings, page or scoped behavior, and a custom CSS selector. The listing says classic themes are not supported. |
| Accessibility Font Resizer | A standalone resizer plugin, including when adding controls through menus, widgets, templates, or content | Visitor text-size choices, remembered settings, and CSS classes for normal, large, and extra-large text. Specific theme behavior still needs testing. |
| Theme or custom implementation | Site owners who want to build and maintain their own control | W3C G178 gives an incremental-control approach, but the cited material does not provide a tested WordPress code snippet. |
| Browser scaling only | Sites whose theme already scales reliably and do not need a separate on-page control | WAI identifies scaling as primarily a user-agent responsibility. The site still needs to preserve usability as text grows. |
The plugin listings describe features, not independent comparative testing. Choose based on theme compatibility, desired control placement, whether you need full-page or scoped resizing, preference persistence, and your ability to maintain the solution.

Add a resizer to a block theme with ReadEase
The ReadEase WordPress.org listing describes a Gutenberg Text Resizer block for block themes that support the Site Editor. It says classic themes are not supported.
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, search for “ReadEase,” then install and activate the plugin.
- Go to Appearance → Editor and open the template part where visitors should find the control, such as the header or footer.
- Add the ReadEase: Text Resizer block and configure its settings in the block editor.
- Choose a control style—dropdown, buttons, slider, or minimal icons—and set the scale range and scope. The listing also describes a custom CSS selector for targeting a specific area.
- Save the template part, then test the control on the live site at 200% text size and at different screen widths.
A header or footer can make a control available across pages, but confirm that it fits your navigation and remains easy to use on narrow screens.

Add Accessibility Font Resizer
The Accessibility Font Resizer WordPress.org listing documents another plugin option, with classes that can be used in menus, widgets, PHP templates, or content.
- In the dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New, search for “Accessibility font resizer,” then install and activate it.
- Go to Settings → Font resizer and configure the plugin.
- Use its documented classes—
afr-normal,afr-large, andafr-xlarge—where you want the corresponding size choices to appear. - If some elements do not resize, inspect which elements are affected and use the plugin’s HTML Elements setting to add them, as the listing describes.
- Test the control and the resulting layout on your actual theme, including at 200% text size.
The listing reports support for percentage, pixel, em, and rem units. That feature description does not establish how the plugin will behave with every theme or component, so verify the result on your site.

Build a custom control or rely on browser scaling
Custom theme implementation
A custom control can increase and decrease text size in steps, following the kind of approach described in W3C G178. Make the controls understandable and operable by keyboard, keep browser zoom available, and verify that the page remains usable at 200%. The cited sources establish the accessibility target and describe the technique; they do not establish a tested WordPress code implementation.

Browser scaling without a site control
Visitors can use browser zoom or text-scaling features when the site permits them to work. Check that the theme does not disable zoom or otherwise interfere with scaling. If the page remains usable as text grows, a separate widget may not be necessary; an on-page control is an optional way to make resizing more discoverable.

The WordPress Theme Handbook’s accessibility guidance says that content and functionality must remain available when text is resized to 200%. It also cautions against multidimensional scrolling, overflow, and overlap.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
- Check that headings, paragraphs, menus, buttons, forms, and navigation remain visible and usable.
- Confirm that enlarged text does not cover other content, clip inside containers, or make controls impossible to activate.
- Look for horizontal and vertical scrolling together; a layout should not require multidimensional scrolling to read or operate.
- Test multiple screen widths and browsers, not only the editor preview or one desktop layout.
- Use relative units for font sizes and line heights where appropriate, then retest the complete page.
- Verify keyboard operation and that browser zoom still works alongside any on-page control.
A resizer widget alone does not establish that a site is fully accessible or compliant. Open Accessibility’s WordPress.org listing notes that a broader accessibility effort also involves matters such as content structure, image alternative text, and semantic HTML.
