The correct remedy depends first on whether the source is Window Capture, Display Capture, or Game Capture, and then on whether the preview is black, blank, aimed at the wrong window, missing the target, or failing only with one game. Use the source-specific checks below rather than changing unrelated settings at random.
Start with the source and the exact symptom
In OBS, open the Sources list and identify the source type. Window Capture selects one application window. Display Capture records an entire monitor. Game Capture targets a game’s rendering output. Their properties and compatibility behavior are different, so a fix for one source should not be treated as a fix for all three.

Record the symptom before changing anything: a source that is absent from the preview, a completely black or blank image, the wrong window, a source that works in other programs but not one target, or an OBS preview that repeats itself. That description determines the next branch.
Fix a blank or wrong Window Capture source
1. Select the window that is actually open
- Open the application you want to capture and leave its window running.
- In OBS, right-click the Window Capture source and choose Properties.
- Use the Window list to select the application’s current window, then apply the change.
A window title can change after a document, account, workspace or page changes. If the source is configured for exact title matching, OBS can remain blank until the original title—or a title that satisfies the selected matching rule—appears again.

2. Check Window Match Priority
Window Capture exposes Window Match Priority. Review that setting when OBS keeps selecting a different instance or cannot find the intended one. Exact-title matching is useful when several copies of an application are open, but it is fragile when the title changes frequently. Choose a priority that matches how the target application identifies its windows, then reselect the current window.
3. Test Capture Method deliberately
Automatic is the default. If the application remains black or blank, open the Capture Method menu and try another method that OBS offers for that source. OBS specifically notes that BitBlt is less efficient but may help with certain programs. Treat this as a compatibility test for the affected application, not as a universal performance recommendation. After changing it, close and reopen the source properties and test the same window again.
4. Confirm the other Window Capture properties
- Capture Cursor: enable or disable it according to whether the pointer belongs in the recording; it does not determine whether the window itself renders.
- Window: verify that the selected entry is the intended instance, especially when an application has multiple windows.
- Match settings: if a title-based rule is enabled, temporarily choose a less restrictive priority to determine whether title matching is the reason for the blank source.
Window Capture is intentionally limited to the selected application window. If your goal is to show the whole desktop, notifications, or several applications at once, use Display Capture instead of trying to make Window Capture behave like it.
Fix Display Capture when the monitor is black
Use the documented Windows method fallback
OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guidance describes the newer Display Capture method for OBS 27 and later on Windows 10 version 1903 or later. It is intended for setups where OBS and the monitor can be on different GPUs. If Automatic fails on a supported setup, open Display Capture properties and manually select Windows 10 as the Capture Method, then test again.

That fallback is specific to Display Capture. Do not apply it as a general answer for a blank Window Capture or a game that fails to hook.
Check which monitor is selected
Display Capture records a display, not an individual application. Verify that the source points to the monitor showing the content and that Windows is not using a disconnected, sleeping or duplicated display. If only one application should appear, return to Window Capture after confirming that the monitor itself displays correctly.
Correct GPU assignments on laptops and multi-GPU desktops
Some Windows systems have an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU. OBS’s GPU Selection Guide covers Windows 10 version 1809 and later and Windows 11, and its recommendations differ by source type:

- Open Windows Settings and find the Graphics page under the system display settings.
- Add or select OBS, choose Options, and assign the preference appropriate to the source you are testing.
- Save the choice, fully restart OBS, and test the same source again.
This is a configuration check, not evidence that you need to replace a GPU. Keep the source type in mind: assigning OBS for Display Capture according to the Window/Game recommendation can create a new mismatch.

Remove conflicts without weakening security
OBS lists overlays and on-screen displays, other recording or capture programs, and some antivirus or firewall products as possible sources of capture problems. Close likely conflicts temporarily and run a controlled test:
- Exit FPS counters, hardware-monitoring overlays, chat overlays and graphics-driver overlays.
- Close other screen recorders, streaming tools, remote-control software and virtual-camera or capture utilities.
- Start OBS with only the affected source and the target application open.
- If the capture now works, re-enable one program at a time to identify the conflict.
If an antivirus or firewall appears involved, use its documented application allow-list or exception mechanism where appropriate. Do not uninstall security software or disable broad protection as a first troubleshooting step.
When the problem is Game Capture
Game Capture has title-specific exceptions. OBS documents examples in which a particular game may require OBS to run with administrator privileges, Window Capture instead of Game Capture, windowed or borderless mode, or another workaround. These behaviors are not a general diagnosis for ordinary applications.
- Write down the exact game title and whether it is running fullscreen, windowed or borderless.
- Check the game’s documented OBS behavior before changing privileges or display modes.
- Test the workaround specified for that title, such as Window Capture or borderless mode, and compare the result with the original configuration.
A game that works while other applications fail points toward game-specific hook behavior; an ordinary application that fails in Window Capture should be debugged with Window Capture’s own properties first.

Stop OBS from capturing itself in a loop
A recursive image of the OBS preview is a feedback effect, not the same problem as a generally blank Window Capture source. OBS documents several ways to avoid it:
- Minimize OBS while recording or streaming.
- In OBS, open Settings > General and enable the option to hide OBS windows from screen capture.
- Choose a capture arrangement that does not include the OBS window, such as capturing the target application with Window Capture rather than the entire display.
After changing the setting, stop and restart the affected capture source so the preview can be checked without the previous feedback frame.

Use this sequence so each test changes one variable:
- Name the source and symptom: Window, Display or Game Capture; missing, black, wrong window, or game-only failure.
- For Window Capture, select the current target window and review Window Match Priority.
- Try an alternative available Capture Method; test BitBlt only as a targeted compatibility check.
- For Display Capture on a supported version, try the documented Windows 10 method when Automatic fails.
- On a multi-GPU computer, set the Windows graphics preference that matches the source and restart OBS.
- Close overlays, monitoring displays and other capture applications, then retest.
- For a game, apply only guidance documented for that exact title.
- If OBS repeats itself, use the anti-feedback steps instead of changing capture methods.
If none of these checks changes the result, collect the Windows version, OBS version, source type and Capture Method, target application or game, GPU model or models, and whether the target is running on an integrated or discrete GPU. Those details are needed to distinguish a source configuration issue from a driver, application or game-specific problem.

Version and interface caveats
The relevant OBS pages reviewed here were published from 2021 through 2023: the laptop guidance is dated June 12, 2021, and the GPU Selection Guide is dated April 24, 2023. OBS, Windows, graphics drivers and individual game behavior can change, so a menu label may differ in a newer build. Treat the version requirements above as the scope of those documented recommendations and verify the labels in your installed versions.
