If by “web file” you mean a WEBP image downloaded from a website, convert it to JPG (also called JPEG) by exporting the image in an app that supports JPEG. On a Mac, Preview’s File > Export > JPEG workflow is usually the quickest. In Windows, Microsoft documents a JPEG export when you save a picture from Word, PowerPoint, or Excel. For command-line work, Google’s dwebp decodes WEBP to PNG or PPM; use a second tool that explicitly supports JPEG if JPG is required.
Keep the original WEBP until you have checked the converted file. JPEG is normally lossy, does not preserve transparency, and cannot preserve animation as animation.
First, identify what “web file” means
“Web file” is not a file-format name. This guide assumes the file ends in .webp and is an image. WEBP is an image format designed for the web and is supported by major browsers and software libraries. JPG and JPEG are two common extensions for the same JPEG format; an upload form that asks for JPG generally accepts a file saved as JPEG.
If the filename ends in .html, .mhtml, .svg, or something other than .webp, renaming the extension will not convert it. Open the file in an application that understands its actual format, then export to the format your destination accepts.

Choose JPG, PNG, or keep WEBP
- Use JPG/JPEG for photographs and sites or apps that specifically require it. JPEG usually produces a broadly compatible still image, but export quality affects detail and file size.
- Use PNG when transparent pixels, sharp interface text, diagrams, or lossless output matter. PNG supports transparency; JPEG does not preserve it in the same way.
- Keep WEBP when the destination accepts it. Google describes WEBP as offering smaller files than comparable PNG or JPEG images in its published format comparison. Converting is not guaranteed to reduce size or improve quality.
Google reports that lossless WEBP images are about 26% smaller than PNGs, while lossy WEBP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent quality. Those are Google’s format comparisons, not a prediction for your particular file. A WEBP-to-JPEG export can therefore be larger, and it cannot restore detail that was already discarded in the source.
Convert WEBP to JPG on a Mac with Preview
- Open the WEBP image in Preview. If another app opens it by default, Control-click the file, choose Open With, and select Preview.
- Choose File > Export.
- In Format, select JPEG.
- Adjust the Quality slider. Higher quality generally retains more detail and creates a larger file; lower quality usually creates a smaller file with more compression.
- Choose a new filename and destination, then select Save. Keeping a new name preserves the original WEBP.
To process a small batch, open the images in one Preview window, select the files in the sidebar, and use the same export workflow. Apple documents this as a general image-file conversion process; support can vary with unusual WEBP variants, so inspect the exported files.
Check the result
- Open the JPG and zoom in on text, faces, and fine edges.
- Confirm that a transparent background has not become an unwanted solid color. If transparency matters, export or retain PNG instead.
- Check the pixel dimensions and file size against the receiving site’s limits.
- Do not repeatedly open and resave the JPEG; each lossy export can introduce additional artifacts.
Convert an image to JPG in Microsoft Office
This method applies when the picture is embedded in a supported Word, PowerPoint, or Excel document. Microsoft’s documented workflow is not a universal converter for every standalone WEBP file.
- Right-click the picture inside the Office document.
- Choose Save as Picture.
- Select JPEG in the format list.
- Choose the filename and folder, then save.
If the standalone download will not open in your Windows image application, insert it into an Office document first only if Office accepts that particular WEBP. Otherwise use an image editor or conversion utility that explicitly lists WEBP input and JPEG output. Do not solve the problem by merely renaming .webp to .jpg; the bytes remain WEBP.
Use Google’s libwebp tools from the command line
Google’s documented decoder is dwebp. Its examples decode WEBP to PNG, and the documentation also lists PPM output. Google describes cwebp as an encoder that turns PNG or JPEG inputs into WEBP, so it is not the direct WEBP-to-JPG command many people assume.

Step 1: Decode WEBP to PNG
dwebp input.webp -o intermediate.png
Replace input.webp with your source path. The command should create intermediate.png and report any decoding error in the terminal.
Step 2: Export the PNG as JPEG
Use an image application or a command-line program that explicitly supports JPEG export. For example, with ImageMagick installed:
magick intermediate.png -quality 90 output.jpg
The -quality value is an export choice, not a restoration setting. Test a representative image, inspect fine detail, and adjust it for your size and quality requirements. If your environment does not have ImageMagick, open the PNG in Preview, an image editor, or another verified JPEG-capable application and export it there.

Batch conversion pattern
For a repeatable batch, decode each WEBP to an intermediate lossless file, then convert each intermediate to JPEG. Keep the intermediate and source until the batch has been checked. Shell syntax differs between macOS, Linux, and Windows, so test the command with one file before writing a loop; filenames containing spaces or quotes need careful quoting.
Browser extension: convenient, but review it first
A Chrome Web Store listing describes an extension that converts WEBP to JPG/JPEG and PNG. Treat this as an optional third-party route, not a Google-endorsed tool or a security-reviewed product. Before installing, read the current listing, publisher identity, requested permissions, update history, and whether conversion happens locally or uploads files. Avoid extensions for confidential images unless you understand where the image data goes. Remove the extension when you no longer need it.

Common problems and fixes
The converted file is still named .webp
Changing a filename extension is not conversion. Reopen the source in Preview, an editor, or a verified converter and choose JPEG as the output format.
There is no JPEG option
The current application may only decode WEBP or may be showing a limited export menu. Use Preview on macOS, Office’s Save as Picture workflow for embedded images, or an application that explicitly documents JPEG export. With dwebp, remember that its documented output is PNG or PPM; add a JPEG-capable second step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe background changed
JPEG has no transparent-pixel channel. Export to PNG when transparency is required, or place the image on the intended background before exporting and verify the result.
The JPG looks blurry or has blocky edges
Raise the JPEG quality setting, start again from the original WEBP rather than a previously exported JPG, and compare at the intended display size. Conversion cannot recreate detail missing from the source.
The output is unexpectedly large
WEBP can be smaller than comparable JPEG at similar quality. Try a sensible JPEG quality setting, resize only when the destination permits it, and remove unnecessary metadata with a trusted local tool. Do not lower quality so far that important text or detail becomes unreadable.

An animated WEBP became one still frame
JPG is a still-image format. A single JPG cannot preserve motion. Keep the animated WEBP or choose a destination format and workflow that explicitly supports animation. The available documentation does not establish one universal animation-conversion command.

Privacy, reliability, and cost decisions
- Privacy: For personal or confidential images, prefer Preview, Office, or trusted local software over uploading files to an online converter. The third-party extension listing does not establish independent security review.
- Reliability: Preserve the source, convert one test file first, and verify dimensions, transparency, animation, and visual quality before processing a batch.
- Cost: Built-in desktop workflows have no separate conversion charge. Online services and extensions can change limits or permissions; review their current terms before sending files.
- Compatibility: Follow the receiving form’s exact requirements. If it accepts WEBP, conversion may be unnecessary; if it requires JPEG, export explicitly as JPEG rather than renaming the file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are JPG and JPEG different formats?
No. JPG and JPEG are commonly used filename extensions for the same JPEG image format.
Can I convert a WEBP to JPG by renaming it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename. The image must be decoded and exported as JPEG.
Will converting WEBP to JPG make the image smaller?
Not necessarily. Google’s published comparisons often show WEBP smaller than comparable JPEG at equivalent quality; your exported JPEG may be larger or lower quality depending on settings.
What should I use when the WEBP has transparency?
Use PNG or another transparency-supporting format unless the destination specifically requires JPEG and you are willing to choose a background.
The Bottom Line
For a downloaded WEBP, export the original as JPEG in Preview on Mac, use Office’s Save as Picture for embedded images, or decode with dwebp and then run a JPEG-capable export. Keep the source, check transparency and quality, and use PNG when JPEG’s limitations matter.
