Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the Screen Options tab is missing in WordPress, first determine whether the tab itself disappeared or whether only a column, checkbox, or editor panel is hidden. On a classic administration screen, open Screen Options and re-enable the item. In the Block Editor, use Preferences instead. If the tab is absent on one or more screens, test permissions and plugin/theme customizations on a staging site or in a troubleshooting session before changing code.
What Screen Options controls
WordPress describes Screen Options as a hanging tab beneath the administration toolbar that lets you choose which fields or modules appear in the current work area. The available controls are specific to the screen: Posts may offer columns and items per page, while another screen may expose different settings. Consequently, a missing column is not proof that the Screen Options tab itself is broken.
Identify the exact symptom
| What you see | Most useful first check | Scope to record |
|---|---|---|
| The Screen Options tab is visible, but a column or module is absent | Open the tab and tick the screen-specific checkbox | Current administration screen and user account |
| A post-editing panel is missing in the Block Editor | Open the editor’s Preferences and inspect the relevant sidebar or panel setting | Editor type and post type |
| The entire tab is absent on one screen | Check whether that screen has any registered options, then investigate screen-specific code | Exact screen and URL |
| The tab is absent across several screens | Compare accounts and test plugins/theme customizations | Users, roles, theme, plugins and WordPress version |
Restore a hidden item when the tab is present
- Sign in with the affected account.
- Open the exact admin page where the control is missing, such as Posts > All Posts.
- Click Screen Options in the upper-right area beneath the toolbar.
- Tick the missing column, module or other item. If available, adjust Number of items per page.
- Close the panel and refresh the screen. The choice is associated with the account and screen, so another administrator may see different selections.
If the checkbox you expect is not listed, it may not be registered for that screen. A plugin can add or remove columns and meta boxes, and some screens have no additional options for WordPress to display.
Check Block Editor Preferences instead
The Block Editor has its own interface for editor panels. While editing a post or page, open the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner and choose Preferences. Review the General and Panels sections, then return to the editor and inspect the settings sidebar. A panel hidden there is a different problem from a missing classic Screen Options tab; changing classic screen settings will not necessarily restore it.

WordPress roles and capabilities govern access to administration actions. Ask a site administrator to compare the affected account with one that can see the tab, including the role and any custom capability rules. Do not assume a role restriction is the cause: a missing tab can also result from screen-specific code or a plugin conflict. Record whether the symptom follows the user to another browser or follows the screen for every user.
When core decides not to show the tab
For developers, the relevant core method is WP_Screen::show_screen_options(). It evaluates whether the current screen has meta boxes, column headers, per-page settings, screen settings or other registered options. WordPress then applies the screen_options_show_screen filter, which can alter the final show/hide decision.
This explains two otherwise confusing cases:
- A screen can legitimately omit the tab because it has no available screen options.
- A callback in a plugin, theme or custom functionality can force the tab to be hidden even when options exist.
Inspecting that hook is an advanced diagnostic step, not a first-line repair. Search active plugins, the theme and site-specific mu-plugins for screen_options_show_screen and for code that removes screen elements. Make changes on staging, keep a backup, and have a developer review the callback. Do not paste a filter override into a production site merely to make the tab appear; that can conceal the feature that should have been registered or interfere with other administration screens.

Test plugin and theme conflicts safely
- Create a current database and files backup. If possible, reproduce the issue on staging rather than the live site.
- Install or open the WordPress Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
- Use its troubleshooting mode. This mode deactivates plugins and switches to a default theme only for your administrator session; visitors and other administrators are not changed.
- Visit the affected screen. If Screen Options returns, re-enable plugins one at a time, refreshing after each change.
- When the tab disappears again, the last item enabled is a likely contributor. Confirm by disabling it and testing the screen repeatedly.
- If no plugin is responsible, test the default theme, then inspect custom code and must-use plugins.
Session troubleshooting is safer than disabling everything for all visitors, but it still changes what you see. Keep notes of each test and end the session when finished.
Use the symptom to narrow the investigation
Only one screen is affected
Copy the screen’s URL and identify its screen ID if a developer is helping. Look for code registered specifically for that post type, taxonomy, settings page or list table. A plugin that removes a column on the Users screen, for example, may leave Screen Options working elsewhere.
Several screens are affected for one user
Compare the account with another administrator and test a private browser window. If the problem follows only one account, inspect user-specific screen preferences, role/capability rules and saved dashboard settings.

All administrators lose the tab
Prioritize recent plugin, theme, mu-plugin and deployment changes. Use troubleshooting mode, then search custom code for the filter named above. Also check browser console and server error logs for JavaScript or PHP errors that began at the same time.
The tab appears but contains no useful controls
That can be normal when the current screen has no registered columns, meta boxes or per-page settings. Confirm the same screen with core plugins temporarily disabled and compare a standard WordPress screen such as Posts > All Posts.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Clicking Screen Options does nothing | Browser JavaScript error, optimization conflict or blocked script | Test a current browser, clear only the site’s cached assets, inspect the console, and disable admin-script optimization in staging. |
| Changes do not persist | Wrong account, cookies blocked, or an object-cache/session issue | Confirm the logged-in user, allow cookies for the site, test a private window, and review cache exclusions for /wp-admin/. |
| Only a custom admin page is affected | The page registered no screen options or deliberately hides them | Ask the plugin author/developer to inspect its screen registration and callbacks. |
| Problem began after a plugin update | Regression or changed screen registration | Use session troubleshooting, record versions, and report the reproducible screen and steps to the author. |
| Role change did not help | The cause is likely code, editor Preferences or a browser conflict | Repeat the tab-versus-panel check and run the staged conflict test. |
What to collect before asking for help
- Exact admin screen name and URL (remove passwords, non-public tokens and private query values).
- Whether the whole tab is missing or one item is missing inside it.
- Whether the issue affects Classic Editor, Block Editor or both.
- WordPress version, active theme, active plugins and any recent changes.
- Affected usernames or roles, without sharing credentials.
- Browser console messages and relevant PHP/server log entries, with secrets redacted.
- Results from Health Check troubleshooting mode, including the plugin or theme that restored or removed the tab.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you actually need is an automated image of the affected admin page for a bug report or visual check, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one API request. It accepts the page like a visitor, removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture, and reports whether a response was a clean shot, a bot check, blank page, timeout, failed load or cache hit. Only clean shots are billed; the other outcomes are not.
Use an authenticated, temporary capture URL only if your site’s security policy permits it. Never place an administrator password in a URL. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options.

FAQ
Does Screen Options control every missing editor panel?
No. Classic administration screens use Screen Options, while Block Editor panels can be independently enabled or disabled in Preferences.

The Bottom Line
Separate a missing tab from a hidden item, check Block Editor Preferences for editor panels, then use account comparison and staged troubleshooting to identify permission, plugin, theme or custom-code causes without risking the live site.
