What a Facebook OG image preview actually uses
Facebook does not choose the preview image simply because it is the largest or most attractive image visible on the page. It reads Open Graph metadata from the document’s HTML. The Open Graph protocol identifies four basic properties:
og:title— the title displayed in the shared card.og:type— the object type, commonlywebsiteorarticle.og:image— the absolute URL of the image Facebook should use.og:url— the canonical URL for the object being shared.
og:description is optional in the protocol but generally recommended because it supplies useful supporting text when Facebook builds the card.
A minimal, valid set of tags
Put these tags in the page’s <head>. Use the final public URL, not a development hostname, relative path, or URL that requires a logged-in session.

Image metadata and duplicate tags
The protocol supports structured image properties such as width, height, MIME type, and alternative text. When you provide og:image, its guidance says you should also provide og:image:alt.

A plugin, theme, or SEO extension that inserts an earlier image can therefore override the one you intended.

Recommended Facebook preview image dimensions
Wix’s help guidance, relaying Facebook Sharing Best Practices, recommends a 1.91:1 image at 1200 × 630 pixels. It lists 200 × 200 pixels as a minimum and recommends at least 600 × 315 pixels to avoid a small link preview. The same guidance says the file should be no larger than 8 MB. Treat these as the recommendations Wix attributes to Facebook; they are not a guarantee of how every current Facebook surface will crop or display an image.

Serve the image from a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS URL. Keep the URL in og:image synchronized with the file you actually want Facebook to fetch; changing a file on a CDN while leaving the same URL can make diagnosis harder because old and new content may coexist in caches.
How to inspect and fix the tags yourself
- Open the exact page URL. Use the URL people will share, including its canonical path and any required country or language variant.
- View the delivered source. In your browser, use “View page source” or an equivalent source command. Search for
og:title,og:type,og:url, andog:image. Inspect the raw HTML rather than only the browser’s Elements panel, because server-rendered and client-injected markup can differ. - Confirm one intended image is first. Remove stale tags generated by a theme, SEO plugin, or social-sharing extension. If multiple images are deliberate, verify their order.
- Check the image URL directly. Paste it into a private browser window. It should resolve without authentication, an expiring token, a cookie challenge, or a redirect chain that prevents a crawler from retrieving it.
- Correct the metadata in the right system. In a CMS, this may be the page’s social-sharing settings; in a custom site, edit the template or server-rendered head. Do not rely on changing only the visible hero image.
- Publish and inspect the source again. Confirm that the production response contains the new values, not just a preview in your editing interface.
- Run the URL through Facebook Object Debugger. The Open Graph project identifies it as Facebook’s official parser and debugger. Wix advises entering the URL there after updating
og:imageso Facebook can inspect refreshed site information.

Why your Facebook link preview image is not showing
The wrong image appears
- Search the source for every
og:image. The first conflicting value wins under the protocol’s array rules. - Check whether a plugin emits a site-wide default before the page-specific tag.
- Verify that the page’s canonical URL and the URL entered into the debugger are the same object.
No image appears
- Make sure
og:imageis an absolute URL and returns the intended file publicly. - Confirm the image is not blocked by authentication, a private bucket, a temporary URL, or a crawler challenge.
- Check dimensions against Wix’s relayed guidance: 1200 × 630 preferred, 600 × 315 or larger recommended to avoid a small preview, and 200 × 200 listed as the minimum.
- Inspect the file size; Wix relays an 8 MB upper recommendation.
The title or description is stale
Read the actual source after publishing. If the old value remains there, the CMS or template change was not applied to the production page. If the source is correct but Facebook still reports the old value, submit the URL to Object Debugger again. Do not assume a fixed cache lifetime: the sources reviewed do not establish a standard expiration or guarantee immediate propagation everywhere.
The image is correct in source but looks cropped
Keep the essential subject and text within the central area of a 1.91:1 canvas. Facebook surfaces can render cards at different sizes, so test the image itself at reduced dimensions and avoid edge-aligned lettering.
Refreshing a preview after changing og:image
- Upload the replacement image at a publicly accessible URL.
- Update the page’s
og:imagetag and, when relevant, its width, height, MIME type, and alt tags. - Publish the page and verify the production HTML.
- Enter the page URL in Facebook Object Debugger to inspect the parsed values and request refreshed site information, following Wix’s recommended workflow.
- Share the URL again only after the debugger shows the intended metadata. If one Facebook surface still displays an older card, allow for propagation differences rather than repeatedly changing tags.
There is no source-supported promise that every Facebook cache refreshes immediately or on a fixed schedule. Keep the old image available while the new metadata propagates, especially for pages shared in campaigns or scheduled posts.

Advanced checks for developers
Canonical URL consistency
og:url should identify the same page represented by the HTML. Do not mix a trailing-slash and non-trailing-slash version, a staging hostname, or a tracking-heavy URL with the canonical production address unless that is intentional.

For frameworks and CMSs that generate metadata dynamically, test several page types: an article, a category page, and a page with no custom image. A default tag can be useful as a fallback, but it should not precede a page-specific image when the page has one.
Image accessibility metadata
Use og:image:alt to describe the image when you provide og:image. The property is part of the protocol’s structured image guidance; it should describe the image rather than repeat the page title.

Remove unintended duplicates. If you intentionally provide an image array, remember that the first conflicting value has preference, so place the desired default first.
Can a screenshot prove that Facebook parsed my OG tags?
No. A screenshot verifies the rendered page. Use Facebook Object Debugger and the page source to verify the metadata Facebook parsed.
