Use a vertical 9:16 image for a custom YouTube Shorts thumbnail. YouTube Help recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels, lists a 640-pixel minimum height, accepts JPG and PNG files, and sets a 50 MB desktop upload limit for Shorts thumbnails. Custom-image uploads are documented in YouTube Studio on a computer and require a verified account. In the YouTube app, you can instead select a frame from the Short.

Those are platform specifications, not a promise of higher click-through or views. The official guidance reviewed by YouTube does not publish a study showing that one thumbnail design performs better than another.

YouTube Shorts thumbnail specifications at a glance

Requirement YouTube guidance What to do
Aspect ratio 9:16 for an uploaded Shorts thumbnail image Build a portrait canvas, not a landscape 16:9 canvas.
Recommended dimensions 2160 × 3840 pixels Export at this size when your editor and source material support it.
Minimum height 640 pixels Do not submit an image shorter than 640 pixels high.
Formats listed JPG and PNG Use either format; choose the one that preserves your text and graphics cleanly.
Desktop file limit 50 MB Keep the exported file at or below 50 MB for the computer upload route.
Custom-image upload YouTube Studio on a computer; verified account required Open the Short’s details, upload under Thumbnail, and save.
Mobile alternative Select a frame from the Short in the YouTube app This is frame selection, not the same documented custom-file upload workflow.

These figures come from YouTube’s current “Add custom thumbnails on YouTube – Computer” help page, reviewed in September 2026. The frame-selection workflow is described separately in YouTube’s “Create YouTube Shorts – Android” help.

Why 9:16 is the right Shorts thumbnail shape

A 9:16 canvas matches the vertical format of a Short. At the recommended size, 2160 divided by 3840 equals 0.5625, the decimal form of 9:16. Starting with that ratio avoids adding side bars or asking YouTube to crop a landscape design into a portrait presentation.

Do not substitute the familiar 16:9 YouTube video thumbnail recommendation for a Short. YouTube specifically recommends 9:16 for Shorts thumbnail images. A 16:9 image can also create a display surprise: YouTube says vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails are shown with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom thumbnail may still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms, but 16:9 is not the Shorts-specific recommendation.

Pixel dimensions, formats and file size

Recommended 2160 × 3840 pixels

Exporting at 2160 × 3840 gives you the dimensions YouTube lists for Shorts. It is a recommendation, not a measured performance threshold. A larger pixel count does not establish that a Short will receive more impressions, and YouTube’s cited guidance provides no click-through study tied to this size.

640-pixel minimum height

The official page lists 640 pixels as the minimum height for Shorts thumbnails. Check height rather than relying only on an editor’s preset name: a file can look portrait while still being too short.

JPG or PNG

YouTube lists JPG and PNG as accepted image formats for custom thumbnails. JPG is often practical for photographic artwork; PNG can preserve sharp text, flat-color graphics or transparency in your working file. Whichever you choose, open the exported file and inspect it at small display sizes before uploading.

50 MB desktop limit

The desktop Shorts thumbnail upload limit is 50 MB. If an export is larger, reduce unnecessary metadata or compression quality, or export again in the other listed format while keeping the 9:16 dimensions intact. Do not confuse the 50 MB limit with a target file size; YouTube does not say that larger files perform better.

How to prepare a custom Shorts thumbnail

  1. Create a 9:16 document. Set the canvas to 2160 × 3840 pixels when possible. If your source is smaller, keep the same ratio and confirm that the height is at least 640 pixels.
  2. Compose for a narrow phone screen. Use one clear subject and short, high-contrast wording. Keep important faces, logos and text away from the extreme edges so interface overlays or different crops are less likely to obscure them. This is practical layout advice, not a YouTube-published safe-area measurement.
  3. Check readability at reduced size. View the image as a small portrait preview. If the title needs zooming to read, shorten it or enlarge the lettering. Avoid placing several competing messages on one thumbnail.
  4. Export as JPG or PNG. Confirm the pixel dimensions after export, not just the document dimensions before export.
  5. Check the file size. Make sure the desktop upload file is no more than 50 MB.
  6. Keep an original copy. Save an editable version separately from the upload file so you can revise wording without repeatedly degrading a compressed image.

How to upload a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio

YouTube’s documented custom-image route is on a computer. Your account must be verified.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and sign in.
  2. Select Content in the left menu, then open the Shorts tab.
  3. Choose the Short whose thumbnail you want to change and open its details.
  4. In the Thumbnail area, choose the option to upload an image and select your JPG or PNG file.
  5. Save the changes.

YouTube notes that a thumbnail change can take time to appear. Check the saved video again later rather than assuming an unchanged preview means the upload failed.

How frame selection in the YouTube app differs

YouTube’s Android Shorts instructions describe a separate option: choose a frame from the Short before upload or after upload. The app workflow lets you select a video frame and, according to the cited help, optionally apply text and filters. It does not describe uploading the same custom image file available through YouTube Studio on a computer.

Use frame selection when a moment in the video already works as the thumbnail. Use Studio’s computer workflow when you need a designed image that is not a frame from the Short.

Display behavior to check before publishing

Vertical content can appear in several YouTube surfaces, and the thumbnail treatment is not identical everywhere. The specific caveat YouTube documents is the 16:9 case: on Home, Explore and subscription pages, a vertical video using a 16:9 custom thumbnail receives an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail. The custom image can still be shown in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms.

For that reason, inspect your 9:16 design in the context where viewers will encounter it, but do not redraw it as 16:9 merely because a different surface may crop or substitute a preview. The Shorts recommendation remains 9:16.

Design decisions YouTube’s specification does not answer

How much text should be used?

YouTube’s cited pages specify dimensions, formats and workflows, not a character limit or an ideal word count. Use the fewest words that identify the video’s promise, and test legibility on a small screen. Treat any claim that a particular number of words guarantees clicks as unsupported by these official instructions.

Should the thumbnail be a frame or an illustration?

Either can be workable technically. A frame is available through the app’s selection feature; a separately designed JPG or PNG is uploaded in Studio on a computer. Choose based on whether a single video moment communicates the subject clearly without added design.

Does 2160 × 3840 guarantee better reach?

No. It is YouTube’s recommended pixel size, not a performance statistic. The official pages reviewed provide no named study or audience metric connecting dimensions, colors or layout to click-through rate.

Troubleshooting common Shorts thumbnail problems

The upload control is missing

Confirm that you are using YouTube Studio on a computer and that the account is verified. The cited custom-thumbnail instructions do not describe custom-file upload as the same mobile workflow used for selecting a frame.

YouTube rejects the file

Open the exported file’s properties and verify all three checks: JPG or PNG format, height of at least 640 pixels, and a file size no greater than 50 MB. Re-export after correcting the first failed check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image looks cropped or replaced on Home

Check whether the file was created as 16:9. YouTube documents automatic 4:5 treatment for vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails on Home, Explore and subscription pages. Recreate the artwork as 9:16 for a Shorts-specific submission.

The saved change is not visible yet

YouTube says changes may take time to appear. Wait, refresh the video’s details and check more than one viewing surface before uploading repeatedly.

The app only lets me pick a frame

That behavior matches the separate app guidance. Move to YouTube Studio on a computer for the documented custom-image upload route, and verify the account first.

Or skip the browser setup

If you are building a page that previews a Shorts thumbnail or publishing artwork from a web workflow, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one API request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a YouTube thumbnail uploader, so you still use YouTube’s Studio or app workflow to set the thumbnail. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status.
