“Taking screenshots” can mean three different things: a capture toolbar appears, an image is copied to the clipboard without a file being created, or image files appear on disk. Identify which symptom you have before changing settings. Windows and macOS expose several screenshot shortcuts, and installed keyboard utilities can claim the same keys. The steps below separate those causes so you can stop the unwanted behavior without disabling every capture feature.
First, identify what is actually happening
Trigger the problem once, if possible, and observe the result:
- An overlay appears: Windows may be opening Snipping Tool, or macOS may be opening its Screenshot controls.
- No file appears, but pasting into an image editor produces a picture: the image is probably being placed on the clipboard.
- A PNG or other image file appears: a shortcut or app is saving captures automatically.
- The event happens only when you press a particular key: inspect that key’s assignment before assuming a hardware fault.
- It happens while you are not touching the keyboard: check remapping utilities, macro software, remote-control tools and a potentially stuck key.
Also note your operating system. The documented controls differ between Windows 10/11 and macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, and the macOS instructions below include newer format controls available on supported Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later.
Stop unwanted screenshots on Windows
Know which shortcut is firing
Microsoft documents these Windows capture actions:

If pressing Print Screen causes the behavior, test the key by itself and then with the Windows key. A keyboard layout may label the key PrtSc, PrtScn, or a camera icon; laptops sometimes place it behind an Fn modifier.

Change Snipping Tool’s automatic saving
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Review the option that automatically saves captured screenshots. Turn it off if you want captures to remain available only for copying or manual saving.
- Check the default save folder setting and choose a folder you can monitor. Microsoft identifies Pictures > Screenshots as the standard location for screenshots saved by Windows shortcuts.
These settings affect Snipping Tool captures; they do not explain every third-party capture. If files continue to appear, proceed to the keyboard-utility checks below.
Find and remove a conflicting Print Screen assignment
Another program can claim Print Screen before Snipping Tool receives it. TechSmith documents conflicts involving Windows 11 Snipping Tool, Logitech Logi Options+, OneDrive and Dropbox in scenarios involving Snagit. Those applications are examples, not proof that any one is installed on your computer.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and make a list of keyboard, mouse, cloud-sync, screenshot, macro and meeting utilities you recognize.
- Open each utility’s keyboard or hotkey page. Search for Print Screen, PrtScn, screen capture or a camera-icon key.
- Remove the duplicate assignment, change it to an unused combination, or disable that utility’s launch-at-startup option if you do not use it.
- Restart the computer and test the key again. If the symptom disappears only when one app is closed, re-enable apps one at a time to confirm the conflict.
Do not uninstall software solely because its name appears in a troubleshooting example. Change the mapping only after you find an assignment on your own system.
Rule out a key or keyboard problem last
A key that sends repeated input can cause repeated captures, but the available guidance does not establish a hardware fault as the cause of your particular symptom. Use an online text field or a keyboard tester to see whether PrtScn, Windows or another modifier repeats when untouched. Try a different keyboard if one is available. On a laptop, remember that Fn may be required for a normally non-working Print Screen key; that caveat explains missed captures, not proof of automatic captures. Repair or replacement is justified only after software assignments and settings have been ruled out.

Stop unwanted screenshots on a Mac
Recognize the built-in shortcuts

Apple’s Screenshot app instructions apply to macOS Mojave 10.14 and later. If a file appears after one of these combinations, the shortcut is functioning normally; the problem is usually an unintended key press, a remapped shortcut or a configured timer.
Inspect Screenshot app options and timers
- Press Shift-Command-5 deliberately to open the Screenshot toolbar.
- Select Options.
- Set Timer to None unless you intentionally need a delay.
- Review Save to. The default is Desktop; choose another folder or a clipboard destination if that better matches your workflow.
- On supported Macs with macOS Tahoe 26 or later, review the available image-format controls as well.
A timer can make a capture appear to happen “by itself” several seconds after the shortcut. Clear it before testing again.

Check macOS shortcut assignments and utilities
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Open the Screenshots category and inspect the checkboxes and key combinations.
- Turn off a shortcut you never use or assign a combination that cannot be pressed accidentally.
- Review installed keyboard managers, window tools, cloud-sync clients and screenshot applications for their own hotkeys or timers.
If screenshots occur while the Mac is idle, disconnect external keyboards and pointing devices temporarily. Reconnect them one at a time; a utility or macro profile may be generating the input. Only after that test should you investigate a physically stuck key.
When screenshots are only in the clipboard
A clipboard-only capture can leave no visible file. On Windows, Microsoft describes Print Screen as placing a static image snapshot in the clipboard. On either platform, open an image editor and paste after the next event. If an image appears, concentrate on the key assignment rather than the save folder. To prevent accidental sharing, clear the clipboard by copying ordinary text after testing, and disable the conflicting hotkey in the responsible utility.

A repeatable cross-platform diagnostic
- Record the symptom: overlay, clipboard image, saved file or all three.
- Record timing: immediately on a key press, after a delay, at login or while idle.
- Test built-in shortcuts intentionally: one at a time, with no third-party utilities running.
- Check destinations: Windows Pictures > Screenshots; Mac Desktop by default, unless Screenshot options specify another location.
- Inspect assignments: Snipping Tool/Screenshot settings, OS keyboard-shortcut panels and installed utility hotkey pages.
