To accept Apple Pay or Google Pay in a WordPress store, connect a compatible WooCommerce payment gateway, enable its express-checkout wallet options, and confirm your store and customers meet the gateway’s requirements. WooPayments, Stripe for WooCommerce, and Square for WooCommerce document wallet support; the available wallets, setup steps, and eligibility differ by gateway.

How digital wallet payments work in WooCommerce

For online checkout, the payment gateway extension—not a physical card terminal—adds wallet payment options to your WooCommerce store. A wallet button lets an eligible customer pay using payment details already set up with a service such as Apple Pay or Google Pay. Which buttons appear depends on the gateway and on conditions such as the shopper’s device, browser, wallet account, merchant country, currency, products, and checkout configuration.

Before choosing an extension, check that it supports the wallets you want in your merchant location and currency. Also consider how it handles HTTPS and domain verification, whether it works with your product and checkout setup, and whether another active payment extension is already adding the same buttons.

Compare the documented WooCommerce gateway options

Gateway route Documented wallet options Important setup and eligibility details
WooPayments Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Link by Stripe, and WooPay Apple Pay and Google Pay share a setting. WooPayments handles Apple Pay configuration and domain verification automatically. Button availability depends on customer, region, device, browser, and product or checkout conditions.
Stripe for WooCommerce Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, and Link by Stripe Apple Pay and Google Pay are enabled together. The site must use a valid SSL certificate and HTTPS throughout. Amazon Pay has merchant-country and currency conditions.
Square for WooCommerce Apple Pay and Google Pay Square documents support for stores in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, France, Spain, and Australia, with USD, GBP, CAD, EUR, or AUD currencies. Its extension creates the Apple Pay domain association file.

These are the providers’ documented capabilities, not a fee comparison. Fees and account approval depend on your location, business, currency, and provider terms; check the current terms before choosing.

Enable Apple Pay and Google Pay with WooPayments

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Payments > Settings.
  2. Find Express Checkouts and enable Apple Pay / Google Pay. The two wallets are controlled together.
  3. Save the settings. WooPayments communicates with the payment partners and handles the Apple Pay domain verification step.
  4. Review the available button locations in the gateway settings. Buttons may be shown on checkout, cart, and individual product pages.
  5. Check the store on an eligible device and browser, using a shopper account with the relevant wallet set up. If you are testing payments, enable WooPayments test mode and follow its guidance for testing on a supported device.

Use Stripe for WooCommerce instead

If you use Stripe’s official WooCommerce extension, configure its payment methods at WooCommerce > Settings > Payments > Stripe > Payment Methods. Apple Pay and Google Pay are controlled together in the extension. Serve the entire site over HTTPS with a valid SSL certificate, then confirm that your Stripe account and merchant location are eligible for the wallet methods you intend to offer.

Do not assume that every payment method visible in a Stripe account is supported by the WooCommerce extension. Check the extension’s current method and eligibility documentation for your account and region.

Confirm current country and currency eligibility in Square’s documentation before configuring the store, since provider availability can change.

  • Site security: Confirm that the storefront uses HTTPS. Stripe’s documented setup requires a valid SSL certificate and HTTPS across the entire site.
  • Customer device and browser: The shopper needs a device and browser supported by the wallet. Apple Pay also requires a supported card; Google Pay requires the shopper to be signed in to a Google account with a payment method added.
  • Merchant and currency eligibility: Check that the gateway offers the wallet for your merchant country and currency. Availability can differ between wallet brands and providers.
  • Checkout and product conditions: Review the gateway’s requirements for the product type, guest checkout or account settings, and the page where you expect the button. A theme that does not support the relevant WooCommerce hooks can also prevent buttons from appearing.
  • Gateway configuration: Verify that the wallet option is enabled and saved, and that any required domain verification has completed.
  • Testing conditions: Test using a supported device and a configured wallet. For WooPayments, use its test-mode instructions; Google Pay troubleshooting also includes logging and reviewing WooCommerce status logs.

Prevent duplicate wallet buttons

If two payment extensions both provide express checkout, they may render duplicate wallet buttons. WooCommerce notes that using WooPayments and its Stripe extension at the same time can duplicate Amazon Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay buttons. Check both extensions’ payment-method settings and disable the duplicated methods in one of them as appropriate.

Which route should you choose?

Start with the gateway that fits your merchant location, currency, and existing payment setup, then confirm it supports the wallet brands you want. Compare its verification process and compatibility with your products, theme, and checkout. WooCommerce recommends WooPayments for most stores in its Apple Pay guidance; some third-party gateway integrations can require manual server certification or other gateway-specific work, and configuration outside the documented support path may require a developer.
