A YouTube thumbnail is the preview image viewers see before opening a video. It works with the video title as a fast visual promise: the image identifies the subject, sets expectations and helps people decide whether to watch. YouTube can suggest frames from your upload, or an eligible, verified account can upload a custom JPG or PNG in YouTube Studio.
The thumbnail may appear in search, Home, Suggested videos, channel pages, the watch page and after playback. Because each surface crops and scales it differently, a useful thumbnail remains clear at small phone-feed size while accurately representing the video.
How a YouTube thumbnail works
The process has four practical stages:
- You upload a video. YouTube can offer still frames taken from that video as suggested thumbnails.
- You choose the visual. If your account is eligible for custom thumbnails, upload your own image in YouTube Studio instead of accepting a suggested frame.
- YouTube displays it with the title. The image becomes the video’s preview on discovery and viewing surfaces, subject to the crop and layout used by each device.
- You measure and iterate. In YouTube Analytics, compare click-through rate (CTR), especially on Home and Suggested, and test improved concepts while keeping the image truthful to the video.
YouTube describes thumbnails as billboard-like discovery surfaces. Viewers generally encounter the thumbnail and title before they hear the video’s content, so both elements need to make the same promise.
Where viewers see thumbnails
A single uploaded image can be reused across several placements, but it will not look identical everywhere:
#1 Best Overall
- Search results and Home feeds use small cards where fine details and long text disappear.
- Suggested videos can appear beside the current video, often in a narrow landscape card.
- Channel pages and subscription views arrange cards at different widths.
- The watch page and post-playback recommendations may use larger artwork.
Design for the smallest likely presentation first. A face, product or other subject should remain recognizable after reduction, and text should be short enough to read without zooming.
Current thumbnail dimensions and file limits
Use the specification that matches the content type. YouTube’s current guidance distinguishes regular videos, Shorts and podcast thumbnails.
| Content or upload context | Recommended dimensions and ratio | Format | Maximum file size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular video | 3840 × 2160 pixels; 16:9; minimum width 640 pixels | JPG or PNG | 2 MB on mobile video-thumbnail uploads; 50 MB on desktop video-thumbnail uploads |
| Shorts | 2160 × 3840 pixels; 9:16; minimum height 640 pixels | JPG or PNG | 2 MB on mobile video-thumbnail uploads; 50 MB on desktop Shorts uploads |
| Podcast thumbnail | Use the dimensions YouTube accepts for the podcast surface | JPG or PNG | 50 MB on desktop; 10 MB on mobile podcast uploads |
The 2 MB mobile limit applies to mobile video-thumbnail uploads. YouTube lists 50 MB for desktop video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails, with a separate 10 MB limit for mobile podcasts. If an upload fails, check both the device-specific limit and the pixel dimensions.
Vertical-video behavior on mobile
A vertical video that uses a 16:9 custom image may receive an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This is a display rule, not evidence that your source file was changed.

Start with one clear subject
Choose a recognizable person, object, result or scene that explains the video’s central idea. Remove decorative details that become noise when the image is reduced. A simple composition gives the eye a place to land.
Rank #2
Use readable text sparingly
Text is optional. If you use it, make the words large, high-contrast and short. Test the finished file at the approximate size of a phone feed card; if you must zoom in, viewers will have the same problem.
Create separation and contrast
Separate the subject from the background with lighting, color contrast or a restrained outline. Contrast also helps your card stand out beside neighboring videos without requiring exaggerated graphics.
Match the promise to the video
The image should show what the viewer will actually encounter. Misleading imagery may produce an initial click but can damage engagement over time and conflicts with YouTube’s guidance. Avoid implying a result, person or event that the video does not contain.

Check policy before publishing
Custom images must follow YouTube Community Guidelines. YouTube identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as examples that can lead to rejection or enforcement. A channel’s daily upload limits can also vary by country or region, channel history and strikes.
How to add a custom thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Verify eligibility. Custom thumbnail upload requires an eligible, verified account. If the upload control is missing, complete verification and review any channel restrictions.
- Prepare the file. Export a JPG or PNG at the correct ratio and dimensions. Keep it below the limit for the device you will use.
- Open the video in Studio. In YouTube Studio, open Content, select the video, and use the thumbnail area in the video’s details screen.
- Upload or choose. Select Upload thumbnail to use your image, or choose one of YouTube’s suggested frames.
- Save. Select Save (or the equivalent publish/update control) and wait for Studio to confirm the change.
- Inspect the result. View the video from more than one surface or device. Check that the crop, text and subject still communicate the same idea.
Studio labels can change as YouTube updates its interface, but the workflow remains the video’s details page, thumbnail control and a save or publish action.

How to add a thumbnail to a Short
Shorts use a portrait 9:16 asset when YouTube accepts a custom image. Prepare a 2160 × 3840 pixel JPG or PNG (minimum height 640 pixels), keep within the upload limit for your device, then open the Short in Studio and use its thumbnail control. The July 24, 2026 YouTube Blog announcement said YouTube Partner Program creators could begin uploading custom thumbnails for Shorts, with expansion planned over time. Eligibility and rollout can change, so check the controls currently shown in your Studio account.
Even when a custom portrait image is accepted, mobile surfaces may apply their own crop or generated preview. Check the Short in the watch feed and on the platforms where your audience actually discovers it.
How to choose between thumbnail concepts
When you have two or more drafts, evaluate them in this order:
- Accuracy: Does the image depict the video’s real subject and outcome?
- Small-size readability: Can the subject and any text be understood on a phone card?
- Emotional and subject clarity: Is it immediately obvious who or what the video is about?
- Contrast: Does the foreground separate from the background and nearby cards?
- Policy compliance: Could any element trigger a Community Guidelines problem?
- Analytics result: After publishing, compare Home and Suggested CTR in YouTube Analytics and observe whether the change improves the audience response you care about.
There is no universal CTR target that makes one design correct for every channel. YouTube specifically points creators to Home and Suggested CTR in the first 24 hours after publication when evaluating thumbnail and title combinations. Use your own baseline and compare like-for-like videos rather than chasing an internet-wide number. YouTube also states, without a publication year for the figure, that 90% of its best-performing videos have custom thumbnails; treat that as an undated platform factoid, not a guarantee that custom artwork will improve every upload.
Why a thumbnail is not showing or looks wrong
The custom-thumbnail option is missing
Your account may not be eligible or verified, or the channel may have a restriction or reached a daily limit. Verify the account and check Studio notifications. Limits can differ by country, region, channel history and strikes.

The upload is rejected
Confirm that the file is JPG or PNG, uses the correct ratio, meets the minimum dimension and is below the size limit for your device. Remove content that could violate Community Guidelines.

Studio may have saved the update while a feed or browser is displaying a cached card. Open the video directly, refresh the page and check another device or surface before uploading repeatedly.
A vertical video shows a different crop
On Home, Explore and subscription pages, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom image for a vertical video with an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail. Compare the watch feed, watch history and a non-mobile view, where the custom image may remain visible.
The thumbnail looks blurry
Start from the recommended pixel dimensions rather than enlarging a small source image. Export once at a high-quality JPG setting or use PNG for graphics with hard edges, then verify that the file was not compressed below the platform’s practical display size.
The design gets clicks but weak results afterward
Recheck the promise. If the title and image attract a click that the opening cannot satisfy, viewer response can deteriorate. Make the first frame, title and thumbnail describe the same outcome.

Using ScreenshotNeo to inspect a published thumbnail
If you need a repeatable view of how a public YouTube watch page renders, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page as an image or PDF through one GET request. This is useful for checking card context, spacing and whether a thumbnail remains legible in a rendered page; it does not replace YouTube Studio’s thumbnail upload or Analytics.
Or skip the browser setup
Use the ScreenshotNeo API documented at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ to capture a public watch page. Replace the example URL with your own video URL and supply your API key.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID -o watch-page.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID"}, timeout=90)
open("watch-page.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('watch-page.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free. Every feature is included on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it.
Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Optimize for discovery speed
Keep the visual simple enough to decode instantly. A technically large file still has to load and render as a small card, so avoid unnecessary detail and oversized text blocks. Export a final image that meets the dimensions without exceeding the relevant upload limit.
Keep experiments controlled
Change one major variable at a time—subject, wording, color treatment or composition—and compare videos with similar topics and traffic sources. Record Home and Suggested CTR in the first 24 hours, then examine whether the result remains consistent as more viewers arrive.
Plan for surface differences
Preview landscape and portrait content on mobile and desktop. A design that works on a channel page may be cropped differently in Home or Suggested, and vertical videos have the special 4:5 mobile behavior described above.
What changed recently
On July 24, 2026, YouTube announced that Partner Program creators could begin uploading custom thumbnails for Shorts, with broader expansion planned over time. The announcement also described Ask Studio generating thumbnail suggestions for long-form videos and allowing creators to revise elements conversationally. These features are rollout-dependent; the controls and eligibility shown in your current Studio account are authoritative.
