To save a photo in high resolution, keep the original file, choose the service’s Original, Unmodified Original, or equivalent full-resolution download option, and verify the downloaded file’s pixel dimensions. A download cannot restore detail that was removed when an image was resized or compressed.
The exact steps depend on where the photo is stored. The procedures below cover Google Photos and iCloud Photos, followed by checks, troubleshooting, and a practical local-backup workflow.
What “high resolution” means
Resolution is primarily the image’s pixel dimensions, such as 4,032 × 3,024 pixels. A larger pixel count usually preserves more detail for editing or printing, but it does not guarantee a sharper picture if the original focus or lens quality was poor. File size, JPEG quality, HEIC/RAW format, and the image’s capture conditions also matter.
Saving a low-resolution copy as a PNG or downloading it repeatedly does not recreate missing pixels. If a cloud service already compressed the upload or resized it, the only way to obtain the original is to find the original on the camera, phone, computer, memory card, or an uncompressed backup.

Before downloading: identify the best source
- Camera or phone original: Best source when it is still available. Copy it before editing or sharing.
- Cloud item: Check whether it was backed up at Original quality or a space-saving setting.
- Edited export: An editor may have reduced dimensions or JPEG quality. Look for an “original,” “maximum quality,” or “export at 100%” option.
- Message or social-media copy: Often resized or recompressed. Treat it as a derivative unless the sender provides the original file.
Google Photos: back up and download at original quality
Set Original quality for future backups
Google Photos distinguishes Original quality from Storage saver. Original quality stores photos and videos at the resolution captured, without a quality change, and uses Google Account storage. Storage saver compresses photos; photos above 16 megapixels are resized to 16 megapixels. Google notes that some files are ineligible for compression and remain at their original file size.
- Open Google Photos on Android or iPhone/iPad.
- Tap your profile image.
- Open Photos settings (or Settings), then Backup.
- Tap Photo and video quality.
- Select Original quality.
Google says each account includes up to 15 GB of storage. Changing the setting affects future backup behavior; it does not turn an already compressed cloud copy back into an original.
Check one item’s backup details
Open the photo in Google Photos and swipe up (or open its information panel). Review the backup details, including dimensions and storage quality, before downloading. This is a better test than judging a preview, which may be optimized for display.
Download on a computer
- Go to photos.google.com and sign in.
- Select the photo or video.
- Choose More (the three-dot menu), then Download.
- Open the downloaded file from your browser’s download folder and verify its dimensions.
For many files, download in batches that your connection and disk can handle, then copy the result to a second location. A portable external SSD is a convenient destination for an offline copy; it does not increase resolution.

iCloud Photos: choose the exact download version
Download selected items from iCloud.com
- On iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC, open iCloud.com/photos and sign in.
- Select one or more photos (Apple’s iCloud.com flow allows up to 1,000 items at a time).
- Open More Download Options or use the Download button.
- Choose the version you need, then confirm Download.
Understand the three choices
| Option | What it provides | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Unmodified Originals | The format as captured or imported. | You need the camera/import file for editing, archiving, or exact preservation. |
| Highest Resolution | The best-quality version for the device, typically HEIC or H.265. | You want maximum available quality while accepting Apple’s device-optimized format. |
| Most Compatible | JPEG or MP4/H.264 conversion. | A program or recipient cannot open HEIC or H.265; this is not the unmodified original. |
Download the whole library on a Mac
In the Photos app, enable iCloud Photos and choose the option to download originals to the Mac (Apple labels this Download Originals). Apple describes this as downloading the library in full resolution. Allow enough local storage and keep the Mac connected to power for a large library.
Verify that the saved file is really high resolution
Check pixel dimensions
- Windows: Right-click the file, choose Properties, then Details; inspect Dimensions.
- macOS: Control-click the file, choose Get Info, or open it in Preview and use Tools > Show Inspector.
- iPhone/iPad: In Photos, open the image and swipe up to view information such as dimensions and file format.
- Android: Open the image in Google Photos or your gallery and view its details/info panel.
Compare the downloaded dimensions with the source item’s details. A changed extension alone does not prove that quality was lost; dimensions and compression are the useful checks.
Keep metadata and the original format when needed
For an archive or later editing, retain the original HEIC, JPEG, RAW, or other captured format. Converting to JPEG for compatibility can discard metadata or introduce another compression pass. Make a separate compatible copy for sharing instead of replacing the original.
Why a downloaded photo can look soft
The upload was already reduced
If Storage saver, an editor, a messaging app, or a social network resized the image before it reached your library, downloading it at “original” quality only retrieves that reduced upload. Locate the phone, camera card, computer, or sender’s original.

You selected a compatibility conversion
On iCloud, Most Compatible intentionally creates JPEG or H.264 versions. Use Unmodified Originals when exact preservation matters, or Highest Resolution when you want the best device-quality version.
The preview is not the downloaded file
Web and app previews may be scaled for speed. Use the service’s explicit download/export command, then inspect the local file rather than saving an image from a displayed preview.
The photo is sharp but appears small when printed
Print size depends on pixel dimensions and the printer’s pixels-per-inch setting. Do not enlarge a file merely to increase its reported dimensions; upscaling adds pixels but not recovered detail.
A reliable local-backup workflow
- Download from the service’s original/full-resolution option.
- Open several files and compare dimensions with the cloud details or camera record.
- Preserve the original filenames and formats where possible.
- Copy the folder to a second drive or other independent backup.
- Only then create resized JPEGs for email, websites, or messaging.
If a download fails, retry a smaller selection, confirm available disk space, and keep the browser open until the archive or file finishes. For very large libraries, work in dated batches and record which folders have been verified.

Or skip the browser setup
If the “photo” is actually an image on a public webpage and you need a clean, repeatable capture, ScreenshotNeo can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It is not a way to recover pixels from a compressed source, but it can automate a webpage capture while removing common page clutter before the shot.
Read the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/photo-page -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/photo-page"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/photo-page' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
require('fs').writeFileSync('shot.webp', data);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Troubleshooting checklist
The download is smaller than expected
- Check the cloud item’s dimensions and backup quality.
- Confirm that you chose Original quality or Unmodified Originals.
- Look for an earlier resized upload or an edited export.
The file will not open
- Check whether it is HEIC, RAW, or another format unsupported by your current app.
- Use a trusted viewer or make a separate Most Compatible/JPEG copy; retain the original.
Google Photos storage fills quickly
Original quality uses Google Account storage. Remove unnecessary duplicates or expand storage only after deciding which originals must be retained; switching to Storage saver changes future storage behavior but cannot restore detail already discarded.
iCloud download stops or omits files
Use selections of no more than 1,000 items on iCloud.com, retry smaller batches, and verify each batch by count and dimensions. For a complete Mac library, use Download Originals and wait for synchronization to finish.

The downloaded image has no expected metadata
Check whether you used a compatibility conversion or an editor export. Retrieve Unmodified Originals or the camera file when capture metadata is essential.
FAQ
Can I make a low-resolution photo high resolution?
You can upscale it, but upscaling invents pixels and cannot restore detail removed during compression or resizing. Find the original whenever possible.
Is a larger file always better?
No. Pixel dimensions, compression, focus, format, and metadata all matter. A large, heavily compressed file may look worse than a smaller, carefully encoded original.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I save photos as PNG?
PNG is useful for graphics and lossless editing, but converting a JPEG or HEIC to PNG does not recover lost detail and can create a much larger file.
