For a standard, long-form YouTube video, make the custom thumbnail 3840 × 2160 pixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Export it as a JPG or PNG. YouTube’s current Help guidance sets a minimum width of 640 pixels and allows files up to 2 MB on mobile and 50 MB on desktop. The often-repeated 1280 × 720 size is still 16:9 and can work, but it is an older recommendation rather than YouTube’s current official resolution recommendation.

The current YouTube thumbnail specification for long videos

YouTube’s official computer guidance recommends a 16:9 thumbnail for videos. Its current suggested resolution is 3840 × 2160 pixels. The same page lists a minimum width of 640 pixels, JPG or PNG file formats, and different upload limits depending on where you upload. See YouTube’s “Add custom thumbnails on YouTube – Computer” help page for the platform’s current wording.

Requirement Long-form video guidance
Recommended dimensions 3840 × 2160 pixels
Aspect ratio 16:9
Minimum width 640 pixels
Accepted formats JPG or PNG
Maximum file size on mobile 2 MB
Maximum file size on desktop 50 MB

The 16:9 ratio means the canvas is 1.777… times wider than it is tall. A 3840 × 2160 image and a 1280 × 720 image therefore have the same shape; they differ in pixel count and in which recommendation they represent.

3840×2160 or 1280×720: which should you use?

Use 3840 × 2160 when you are creating a new master file. It is YouTube’s current official recommendation for video thumbnails. A larger master gives you more pixels to work with when you crop, move text, or resize an element before exporting.

1280 × 720 remains technically compatible with the shape. It is 16:9, meets the 640-pixel minimum width, and is still widely used. A 2020 Boston University YouTube SEO guide recorded 1280 × 720 as its recommendation; that older guidance is available in its YouTube Search Engine Optimization Guide. It should not be presented as YouTube’s current official resolution.

Question 3840 × 2160 1280 × 720
Is it 16:9? Yes Yes
Status in current YouTube Help guidance Current recommended resolution Older, commonly repeated recommendation
Pixel dimensions 8,294,400 pixels 921,600 pixels
File-size consideration Can produce a larger export, so check the applicable limit Often easier to keep small, but still check the limit
Best use New source files and designs that may need cropping Existing artwork that already looks sharp and is within the limit

Do not enlarge a soft 1280 × 720 image and expect extra detail to appear. If the original is already finished and clear, uploading it is reasonable; if you are starting from scratch, set the document to 3840 × 2160.

Long-form videos versus Shorts

The 16:9 recommendation applies to regular videos, including long-form uploads. Shorts are handled separately: YouTube’s guidance recommends 2160 × 3840 pixels in a 9:16 portrait orientation. Do not use a 16:9 long-video thumbnail as the design canvas for a Short.

YouTube also describes a special behavior for vertical videos that have a 16:9 custom thumbnail. On Home, Explore, and subscription pages, YouTube may show an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail instead. The custom thumbnail can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. This is a display treatment for vertical video surfaces, not a reason to change the long-form specification.

How to make a compliant long-video thumbnail

  1. Create the canvas. In your image editor, start a document at 3840 × 2160 pixels. Confirm that the document is horizontal and has a 16:9 ratio.
  2. Build the composition at full size. Place the main subject and the few words that identify the video where they remain legible after the image is displayed small. Keep important details away from the extreme edges so a surrounding interface or a slight crop does not remove them.
  3. Check small-size readability. Temporarily view the design at a much smaller size. If the subject, contrast, or headline disappears, simplify the layout rather than relying on the extra pixels.
  4. Export a supported file. Choose JPG for a photographic design or PNG when you need crisp graphic edges or transparency during your editing workflow. YouTube’s accepted upload formats for video thumbnails are JPG and PNG.
  5. Check the file size. Keep the export at or below 2 MB when uploading from a mobile device and at or below 50 MB when uploading from a desktop. A 3840 × 2160 canvas can be compressed or exported with a lower quality setting if it exceeds the limit; inspect the result at 100% so compression has not introduced visible artifacts.
  6. Upload in YouTube Studio. On desktop, open YouTube Studio, choose Content, select the video, and use the thumbnail area to choose Upload file. On a phone, use the YouTube app or mobile Studio flow available for your account and observe the stricter 2 MB limit. The exact controls can vary by account and app version.
  7. Verify the result. Reopen the video details and check that the intended image is selected. Preview it at the sizes where your audience will encounter it; a technically valid file can still be unreadable if the design is too busy.

Export and upload troubleshooting

The file is rejected for size

First identify where you are uploading. The mobile limit is 2 MB, while the desktop limit is 50 MB. Re-export the same 16:9 artwork as a compressed JPG, reduce unnecessary metadata, or upload from a desktop if that is practical. Do not solve a size error by changing the canvas to a non-16:9 shape.

The thumbnail looks blurry

Check the source dimensions and the export. A small image enlarged to 3840 × 2160 cannot recover lost detail. Use a sharp original, export at the intended dimensions, and inspect the saved file at 100% before uploading.

Text is cut off or hard to read

Return to the 3840 × 2160 master and move essential text and faces inward. Then preview the finished image at a small display size. The 16:9 requirement controls the shape; it does not guarantee that every design will remain legible.

The image has the wrong orientation

A long-form video thumbnail should be horizontal 16:9. A 9:16 portrait canvas is the Shorts-oriented format. Recreate the composition on the correct canvas instead of stretching a portrait image.

A vertical video shows a different-looking thumbnail on Home

This can be the behavior YouTube documents for vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails: Home, Explore, and subscription pages may use an automatically generated 4:5 version, while other surfaces retain the custom image. Check the watch feed and watch history before replacing a correctly uploaded file.

The editor offers only 1280×720 templates

That template is still 16:9 and can meet the minimum width. If you need the current official recommendation, create a custom 3840 × 2160 document and transfer the design rather than assuming the template reflects the latest YouTube guidance.

Practical workflow decisions

When 4K-sized artwork is worth keeping

Keep the 3840 × 2160 master when you expect to make alternate crops, refresh the design later, or reuse the artwork in a larger context. Store the master separately from the compressed upload so a smaller export does not become your only copy.

When a 1280×720 file is sufficient

An existing 1280 × 720 thumbnail is already the correct aspect ratio and exceeds the minimum width. If it is sharp, readable, and within the relevant upload limit, replacing it solely because the current recommendation is 3840 × 2160 is optional. New projects should still begin at the current recommended resolution.

Mobile versus desktop production

Designing on a phone does not change the 16:9 canvas, but it does change the maximum upload size to 2 MB. If your export repeatedly exceeds that limit, compress it before transfer or complete the upload from desktop, where YouTube lists a 50 MB limit.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean source frame from a webpage for your thumbnail, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one HTTP request. It is not a substitute for YouTube’s 16:9 thumbnail rules; it is a way to obtain a webpage image before you place and edit it on a 3840 × 2160 canvas. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Bottom line for a long-video thumbnail

Set a new long-form YouTube thumbnail to 3840 × 2160 pixels, 16:9, and export JPG or PNG. Keep the file under 2 MB for mobile uploads or 50 MB for desktop uploads. Treat 1280 × 720 as a usable legacy-size file, not YouTube’s current official resolution recommendation, and use the separate 9:16 guidance for Shorts.
