Set the image on Gravatar, then enable its display in the relevant block or template. If you need the image uploaded directly to your site, use a local-avatar or author-box plugin instead.
How WordPress handles author photos
WordPress separates the author image from the place where it appears. The profile picture is associated with the user’s profile email through Gravatar. A post, archive, or template must also be configured to show that avatar.
| Route | Where the image is hosted | Gravatar association required? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in Gravatar | Gravatar | Yes—the WordPress profile email must match | Low-maintenance sites using WordPress’s standard profile system |
| Local-avatar plugin | Your WordPress site | No | Sites that require direct uploads and local control |
Option 1: Set the photo through Gravatar
- Check the author’s profile email. In the WordPress dashboard, open the user’s profile and note the email address. WordPress uses this address to find the matching Gravatar.
- Update the image for that email on Gravatar. Sign in to Gravatar with the account associated with the profile email, upload or select the desired picture, and save it.
- Allow time for the change to appear. Return to WordPress and check the public author area after the Gravatar update has been saved.
Changing the Gravatar image does not automatically make an invisible author area appear. The post or theme template must include an avatar-enabled block.
Show the photo with the Avatar block
The Avatar block displays a user’s profile picture on a post, page, or template. It can use the current post or page author, or a specific user.

Author photos in Query Loops
To show the author for every item in a list, insert the Avatar block inside the Query Loop’s Post Template. Leaving the user unset allows each loop item to use its own post author.
Show the photo in a post byline
Use the Post Author block when the photo belongs with the author name, byline, and biography. Its settings control whether the avatar and bio are displayed. Single-post templates commonly include this block already.

- Select the Post Author block.
- In the block settings, turn on the avatar. Turn on the bio as well if the author description should appear.
- Save the template and preview a published post.
If the Gravatar is correct but no image appears, select the Post Author block and check that its avatar setting is enabled. A theme can also use a different byline layout, so inspect the template that actually controls the page.
Option 2: Upload an image locally with a plugin
A local-avatar or author-box plugin is the alternative when the author or administrator needs to upload an image to WordPress rather than rely on Gravatar. WordPress.org listings describe Tidy Author Box and WP Post Author as supporting custom or local avatar uploads.

Before installing one, check its current maintenance status, WordPress compatibility, required permissions, and how it integrates with the site’s theme and author templates. Installing a plugin also adds an ongoing plugin dependency.
When a local avatar is the better choice
- The author should not need a Gravatar account or email association.
- Administrators need images stored and managed within the site.
- A site policy requires local media control.
- The existing theme or workflow does not provide a usable Gravatar-based author area.
Author photo troubleshooting
The image is missing everywhere
- Confirm that the WordPress profile email is the same address associated with the Gravatar image.
- Check that the Gravatar update was saved and preview the public page again.
- Verify that the relevant template contains an Avatar or Post Author block.
The image appears in one place but not another
Each archive, single-post template, Query Loop, or custom author area can have its own block settings. Inspect the specific location that is missing the image rather than changing the user profile again.

The author name appears but the photo does not
Select the Post Author block and enable its avatar option. If the layout uses a separate byline, add an Avatar block and set it to the current post author.
A local-avatar plugin does not behave as expected
Check the plugin’s current compatibility information and its own settings, then confirm that the active theme uses the plugin’s author output. Plugin behavior can vary by WordPress version, theme, permissions, and other installed plugins.
