You can then launch it from Chrome’s Extensions icon beside the address bar and pin it for quicker access. Chrome does not allow extension installation from Incognito or guest windows, and an employer or school can block installations on a managed browser.
Before you install: choose the capture you actually need
Screenshot extensions do not all capture the same thing. Read the current Web Store listing and look for the capability that matches your job:
- Visible area: captures the portion of the page currently in the viewport.
- Selected area: lets you draw a rectangle around part of the page.
- Full page: captures content below the fold, often by scrolling or assembling multiple images.
- Annotation: adds arrows, highlights, text or blurring before you save.
Also check the listed output formats, save destination, editor, update history and permissions. Exact buttons and formats differ by publisher, so do not assume that two extensions with similar names work the same way.
Install a screenshot extension from the Chrome Web Store
- Open a normal Chrome window on your computer. Go to the Chrome Web Store. Installation is not available while browsing as a guest or in Incognito mode.
- Search for a screenshot extension. Use terms such as “screenshot,” “full-page screenshot” or “screen capture.” Open the listing that fits your required capture type.
- Check the publisher and listing details. Read the description, permissions, reviews and update information. A screenshot tool requesting access unrelated to your task deserves extra scrutiny.
- Select Add to Chrome. Chrome displays a permissions dialog before installation.
- Review the warning. Select Add extension only if you trust the publisher and the requested access makes sense. Google’s guidance is: “Make sure that you only approve extensions that you trust.”
- Open the extension. Select Chrome’s Extensions icon (the puzzle-piece symbol) to the right of the address bar, then select the newly installed extension. Follow its own capture and save controls.
- Pin it if you use it often. Open the Extensions menu and select the pin control beside the extension. Its icon will remain beside the address bar.
Review and limit an extension’s permissions
Chrome extensions can request access to data on all websites or only specified sites. Depending on the extension, permissions may also include browsing history, tabs and browsing activity, physical location, bookmarks, or data you copy and paste. Some permissions are requested after installation rather than during the initial install.

Inspect access before approving
In the installation dialog, stop if the warning is broader than the screenshot task requires. For example, a simple local capture may not need unrestricted access to every website. Cancel the installation and choose another listing when the scope is unclear.
Change site access after installation
- Open Chrome’s Extensions menu.
- Find the screenshot extension and open its More menu.
- Select This can read and change site data.
- Choose the narrowest practical setting: access on the current site, specific sites, or all sites.
Narrow access can prevent a capture command from working on a site you have not allowed. You can temporarily grant access for that site and then reduce it again.
Manage, repair or remove the extension
Open Chrome’s extensions-management page from the Extensions menu by selecting Manage extensions. From there you can turn an extension off, repair a corrupted installation, allow or disallow Incognito use, or remove it. Allowing Incognito is a separate choice after installation; it does not let you install from an Incognito window.
Capture and save a page
The exact workflow is publisher-specific, but most extensions follow this pattern:

- Select the extension from the toolbar or Extensions menu.
- Choose visible-area, selected-area or full-page capture.
- Use the extension’s editor if you need to crop, annotate or obscure information.
- Choose its save or download command and confirm the format and destination.
For long pages, watch for fixed headers, lazy-loaded images, animations and content that appears only after scrolling. A full-page tool may need permission to read the page and may produce a different result when a site changes content during capture.
Take a full-page screenshot without installing an extension
For a one-off full-page image, Chrome DevTools provides an extension-free route. This is community guidance, and the command-menu presentation can vary between Chrome versions.

- Open the page in a regular Chrome window.
- Open DevTools (for example, from Chrome’s menu under More tools and Developer tools).
- Open the DevTools command menu.
- Type screenshot in the command search.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot.
Chrome saves the generated image using its normal download behavior. This method avoids granting a third-party extension ongoing access, but it is less convenient for repeated captures and does not provide an extension publisher’s annotation workflow.
Compare your options before deciding

Troubleshoot installation and capture problems
“Add to Chrome” is missing or disabled
First, leave Incognito or guest mode and retry in a normal window. If the browser is supplied by an employer or school, an administrator may have blocked extension installation. You cannot override that policy as a regular user; contact the administrator or use an approved alternative such as DevTools.
Chrome shows permissions you do not expect
Cancel rather than approving automatically. Compare the requested access with the feature you need, then select a different listing if the scope is excessive or poorly explained. Website access can allow an extension to read or modify data on visited pages.
The extension cannot capture the current page
Open the extension’s site-access setting and grant access to the current site or the specific site you intend to capture. Some browser-protected pages, Chrome settings pages and restricted frames cannot be read by ordinary extensions. If access is already correct, reload the page, disable the extension and re-enable it, or repair it from Manage extensions.
The extension is corrupted or no longer supported
Use Manage extensions to repair it, turn it off or remove it. Check the listing for a recent update and choose an alternative whose capture mode and permissions fit your needs.
The full-page image is incomplete
Wait for lazy-loaded content, dismiss overlays that cover the page, and retry after the page settles. Long pages with animated or continuously loading sections can change while the extension scrolls. If the extension offers a wait, delay or full-page setting, follow its documentation; those controls are not standardized across publishers.

The result contains private information
Review the image before sharing. Crop or blur sensitive material with the extension’s editor when available, and remember that granting site access can expose page data to the extension while it is enabled.
